Andropause

Andropause is the term given to a combination of symptoms that can lead to the male menopause. It is a controversial term, and medical opinion is split as to whether this phenomenon actually occurs, but it is usually attributed to a reduction in the level of testosterone in men over the age of 40. The controversy emerges because there is no clear physical symptom to match the end of menstruation in women. The symptoms that do occur include an increase in body fat, loss of muscle mass and low energy, usually accompanied by a lowered sex drive, impotence and mood swings. All of these symptoms can be attributed to other conditions, which makes diagnosis difficult. Treatment can include testosterone replacement therapy, but not in the case of male breast or prostate cancer sufferers.

hey there. Im 33 and over the last couple of years i have had all of the classic symptoms, i used to enjoy the gym and working out but this increasingly became impossible as i lost all my drive and motivation. I was also getting joint pains. Was reffered to a rheumatologist due to these pains and i requested a blood test fot t. my levels came back at 12.5. My gp said this was normal and was dismissive and told me "you will not get testosterone treatment". I decided to go to a private gp surgery. Luckily the doctor had experience of low T and prescribed me nebido. It is expensive but at this moment it is worth it. i feel so much better about life as i was previously not able to see a future, I was able to work out at the gym at a high intensity for the first time in years , and i get a buzz to work out which is all brilliant. I am hoping that this trial with nebido will give me the ammunition to approach my gp in order that i get nhs funded nebido. It seems the nhs is preocupied with ftm transexuals than with ordinary men for quality of life issues. Men pay most of the taxes but receive so little out of it all in the name of political correctness. I will fight this as nebido has given me back my spark. By the way, i had a history of depression and low self esteem and this has been resolved with the t. Good luck guys, make the system work for you.

I was diagnosed early this year with Low T due to hypopituitarism. To be honest the NHS have been ok but very slow to react. Been on testogel for 9 months now and its better but not right. Had a recent test and levels at 12.5 Nmol at 9 in the morning. I am 44 and otherwise healthy and fit. GP just told me that is within normal range of 10 - 28 so thats ok...!!! I checked and online you can see studies that show average T level for 90 year old is 13 !! so I have the T levels of a 90 year old and thats ok !!?? There is for sure a lot of ignorance and you have to be prepared. I now have to fight to see my specialist again and try and demand they increase it to something approaching levels suitable for my age.

Me and my husband have always had a good sex life but recently he has lost it, in fact he has lost any feeling to do anything remotely sexual. It has been 2 years since we did anything. It is putting a strain on our marriage and is very frustrating for me, does anyone have any advice for me ... please..

I am amale aged 64. For the last two years I have difficulty getting and maintaining an erection. When I finally manage it, At climax there is no seminal fluid just a little dribble, with no feeling. Also I am experiencing very weak urine flow, having to go to the toilet three times a night. Could these problems be down to a prostate problem

hello iam a 26yr old male and at the age of 22 i was diagnosed with klinefelter's syndrome. basically my body does not produce enough testoterone on its own so i have injections every ten weeks of testosterone pumped into my body. also my testicles did not grow with the rest of my body, so i have had one removed and had an implant put in and iam now waiting for the other one to be done. i have came to terms with this condition. what iam trying to say is this condition is not widely known and not talked about very often , so i would urge males who often fly of the handle for no reason or are constantly feeling tired and have no energy to go to your G.P. and suggest this condition. its nothing to be ashamed off, and has really helped me over the past 4yrs. i hope this comes to help of some people. And i hope maybe the show will look into for people who don't really understand it.

I an a 44 (almost 45) year old man. I had a vasectomy 2 years ago while my wife was pregnant with my 4th child. I have been to see urologist at Kings for over 18 months due to low libido and ED. My blood tests show Testosterone within limits albeit at lower end. They cannot find *ANYTHING* wrong with me, have prescribed Viagra, Cialis (various doses) and have accepted they are no closer to a solution. After an almost toe to toe discussion, where I challenged their knowledge and abilities, I had pelvic MRI scan and penile scan. They have referred me to Psycho-Sexual counselling and have now signed me off from their clinic. I can just get an erection - after a while - and can just about keep it during intercourse, but the feedback loop seems to have gone - it's almost like wearing a condom! The loss of sensitivity is huge. Being honest, I think the symptoms started before my vasectomy, although there has been a marked drop-off since then! My wife has noticed the changes in my behaviour and moods, and also I find myself significantly more emotional than before. WHY oh WHY has the health industry in this country closed ranks on these issues? The urologist denied the existence of Andropause. I pointed out that Menopause was denied until the medical industry finally accepted it's existence. That was greeted with stunned silence! I am now being referred to someone else!

You didn't say what your testosterone reading is. Depending on the lab, the serum testosterone result might come back in the range of say 5.8-19.5 units. This "assay range" relates to the population of all men. Let's say your result was 7.1: low but still within the "normal" range. Wrong! For a man of your age, "normal" would be say 9-13. A result of 7.1 would only normal if you are 70 years old! The NHS can't afford the consequences of acknowledging the andropause and their practitioners won't generally treat you - not even specialist endochinolgists. Try self-medicating with off the shelf products like Testrogain or DHEA. With the Cialis, take 10mg Friday and Saturday lunchtime in preparation for love making on Saturday night. Don't just take 20mg to an hour before because you may be disappointed with the result! More than anything, eat helthier food, get fitter by doing more exercise and spend some time each day relaxing or meditating. Don't put pressure on yourself by criticising your performance in bed. ALL men (with no expections) will suffer ED at some time in their lives and its not usually permanent. Your vasectomy has no connection to your ability to produce or maintain an erection - unless you convince yourself (wrongly) that it does. Good luck - you will get over this temporary setback. I'm speaking from personal experience! I am not a doctor but I am an alternative healthcare practitioner.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I have started using AndroForte from Hormone Solutions (Lawley Pharmaceuticals in Australia) - for about 2 weeks. It's not been long enough to make a definitive statement about it's effectiveness (for me), however, one thing that I can testify (sic) to is that it has evened out my moods significantly and I am nowhere near as emotionally on the edge as before. (I even used to find myself significantly affected (becoming tearful) by highly emotional events on TV! - happily this is no longer the case!) With respect to the suggestions about keeping healthy, I went through a period of running almost daily, training at the gym 4 times a week and eating much more healthily - with no change in my ED condition. (However, I fully accept that it is a good thing to do anyway!) I'll update this page with respect to any changes in my condition and/or my opinion about AndroForte.

sir over the last 2 years i have suffered from the male menopause but trying to get a doctor to believe me (very hard) my wife knows i am sufferng and she is sick of telling doctors she was the one that told me i was suffering. but after reading as much as i could and i am no doctor but it does not take long to add one plus one to get two. we have found one doctor that i am seeing who knows about male menopause and he fingers crossed started blood testing to make sure that i am suffering from and not somthing else.

I have gone through the Andropause but according to N.I.C.E it does not exist,so what cause my hot flushes mood swings and other related symptoms.I when to Dr Carruthers website filled out the question sheet I ticked all the boxes. So why can't N.I.C.E get its act together and accept the fact it does exist,an start offering men hormone replacement to fix the problem.Another side affect is I'm always falling asleep if I sit down in the evening.
