Andropause
Andropause is the term given to a combination of symptoms that can lead to the male menopause. It is a controversial term, and medical opinion is split as to whether this phenomenon actually occurs, but it is usually attributed to a reduction in the level of testosterone in men over the age of 40. The controversy emerges because there is no clear physical symptom to match the end of menstruation in women. The symptoms that do occur include an increase in body fat, loss of muscle mass and low energy, usually accompanied by a lowered sex drive, impotence and mood swings. All of these symptoms can be attributed to other conditions, which makes diagnosis difficult. Treatment can include testosterone replacement therapy, but not in the case of male breast or prostate cancer sufferers.

My husband is 49yrs old and our sex life has been non-existent for about 3 years. The doctor prescribed Viagra (which cost about £36 for 4 tablets) but these didn't work. My husband has no desire for sex and is unable to acheive any form of satisfactory erection. He also suffers from night sweats and various other symptoms and on watching 'Embarrassing Bodies' it all pointed to the Andropause. My husband reluctantly went to the GP at my request (he finds sexual problems embarassing to talk about) and had a blood test. The test was apparently 'normal' whatever normal is so we are now resigned to having a sexless marriage at quite a young age. The GP's are too quick to dismiss patients at the 1st test and are not prepared to look deeper.
I put on a comment during the week and thought I would keep you up to date on my husbands appointment. He had his results and was told everything was normal. He was told that he could have a prescription for Viagra but would have to put up with the night sweats. I am not happy with this diagnosis and have suggested that he go back and get a second oppinion from his regular GP (who it is impossible to get an appointment with). Hopefully he might be able to do more.
My husband is 47 and for about the last 7 years has been unable to keep an erection. My mother mentioned this programme and suggested I look up Andropause. He has also been suffering from severe night sweats (last night he woke in a puddle of sweat and we had to change the sheets). I suggested that he go to the drs and mention his simptoms. Last week he went to have blood tests and tomorrow he is going back for the results. If I hadnt watched this programme I wouldnt have known about this condition so its well worth getting things checked out. I will keep you up dated on his progress. Many thanks to all those posted above as it has made us feel NOT ALONE.
i too have erectile problems but 18 months ago i had bad cramp in my calf an i think my ham string of ligaments are damaged and i cannot walk up hills is this also down to low testosterone my ham string not repairing i am 61
hi i am not sure if my problem is the same as above. basically i am a 47 year old man, who up until 1 yr ago had a very active sex life with my partner. However, over the last year having sex has become less and less and i havent had sex for the last 6 months. this is causing a lot of upset for my partner, but not to me. i ahve no desire to have sex, and my partner feels that she is unnattractive to me,. this is made even worse as i had an affair two years ago i do wake with an erection, i have taken viagra but still had no desire to have sex, i love my partner, but dont have a desire to have sexual intercourse, but fear i will lose my partner if things dont change
I am now 60 and for a few years was always tired and irritable. I know what the trouble was, as my thyroid was underperforming and I was low in testosterone as I deamnded a test it was 9.8 and the lower limit was 10, I havent any idea of the top limit, that is before you become over-normal. I demanded an appt with an endochronologist but I was told by them " It was not HIS POLICY to give ANY MAN any hormone support at all." I however got an urologist to prescribe patches and the change was immense and immediate, I was a functioning man again and happy with life again. my manbbobs went and I became stronger and fitter. However the down side was that the patches burnt the skin so I had to change to testogel which does smell a bit and is awkward to use but it did work still. I then asked for three monthly injectable testosterone but this didnt seem to do anything and I dropped back as before. It was suggested to me that the Blackmarket supplies to bodybuilders which are counterfeit might have got into the supplychain as the packaging is identical and the peanut oil inside is all there is. I have now gone back to gel and things are improving again. Go to your doctor if you suspect hormone deficiency and get a test do not be put off by them if they are young they dont know how it really is and how your life is destroyed.
We must have the best dr on earth as she sent my husband off for a testosterone test immediately and referred him to a urology nurse for his erectile problems ! He has now been referred to an endochrinologist as his testosterone level has gone from 18.7 in 2008 to 4.2 in december. Our only problem is that the dr wont prescribe testosterone replacement until he has seen the specialist as the lack of testosterone could be caused by something more serious so all of you out there suffering put your foot down and demand a test it will save your marriage !
I am 55yrs and have very similar symptoms, for 18mts approx, as described above and depicted on your tv programme.I was treated, 4yrs ago, for Non Hodkins Lymphoma. Understandably, the consultant and GP are tending towards a diagnosis of mild depression. My view is that it is also reasonable to say that it is easy to feel fed up if ones energy tends to run out half way through the day, most days. When I get severe bouts of fatigue, I have the added symptoms of mouth ulcers, sore throats and head aches. I was also read that taking testosterone replacement patches may increase risk of cancer - is this true?. Have almost resigned to managing my condition myself by taking naps when I can so that I can function at some acceptable level. I am also considering a work sharing arrangement in 2010 to lighten the load at work.
I started with night sweats and the GP tried various tests implicated therefor, but not testotsterone AFAIK. The next test 6 months later was not helpful, they only test for cholesterol and PSA for a man my age, but the next time I insisted on testotosterone. They diagnosed it as normal (for my age!). Statistics have to be taken in context and the context is that normal includes all men who suffer in silence. Skewed statistics are only of use to politicians, not clinicians. You programme gave me a name. And a set of symptoms. I have a sufficiant subset to qualify. A note to the lady who posted above. Try getting your hubby to look at this website. And good luck.
I am a 58 year old male, I am tired all day, every day, but find it hard to get a good nights sleep. I get depressed and sometimes cry for nothing, I never get bad tempered. I have a very low sex drive even though I take viagra I still never get a good erection but just enough to enter and thats it. I watched your program about andropause and I think I fit every part of it, please could you let me know what to do about it,
