Andropause

Andropause is the term given to a combination of symptoms that can lead to the male menopause. It is a controversial term, and medical opinion is split as to whether this phenomenon actually occurs, but it is usually attributed to a reduction in the level of testosterone in men over the age of 40. The controversy emerges because there is no clear physical symptom to match the end of menstruation in women. The symptoms that do occur include an increase in body fat, loss of muscle mass and low energy, usually accompanied by a lowered sex drive, impotence and mood swings. All of these symptoms can be attributed to other conditions, which makes diagnosis difficult. Treatment can include testosterone replacement therapy, but not in the case of male breast or prostate cancer sufferers.

My Husband has a low sex drive ,he's been to see his GP and they did a testosterone test and it was 14. They said the lowest was 7 and that most men are usually 21.The Gp said the only thing he could do was refer my husband to a sex theropy. It's not a sex theropy he needs its something to increase his testosterone. He too proud to return to his GP and demand treatment, but this is effecting our marrage. Is there any tablet/treatment out there that can improve his testosterone. We have lived with this now for 16 years, is there any help out there?

I'm 28 and up to 3 or 4 years ago I used mto have a high sex drive but now it is lost. I find it takes ages to get aroused and when my girlfriend and I have sex, it's over in about 10 minutes. it is frustrating for both me and her. I am 2 embarrased to talk about it to my own doctor. What can I do?

We have been marred for only one year my husbond is 52 and over the period I have known him his energy levels have really gone down.He could sleep for over 12 hours and still feel tired. He never seems to want sex I know he loves me and that he was not always like this. He says it is because he is getting old which is not the case. I want us to enjoy an active fun sex life and not put up with second best. He will not go to the doctor what should I do ?

I'm 69 years old.and have been sufering erectile problems for 20 years.I've been treated with injections and viagra. these no longer work.I get very exhausted, and very angry at very trivial things. Do you think this could be caused by low testosterone levels.

My partner is only aged 42. However, he has been acting weird recently. Those symptoms are mentioned exactly the same as above, especially moody. I never thought andropause would come to a young age at 40-ish. i am willing to help but he is driving me frustrated too. What can I do if he doesn't want to face this problem and see GP?

My husband is 49yrs old and our sex life has been non-existent for about 3 years. The doctor prescribed Viagra (which cost about £36 for 4 tablets) but these didn't work. My husband has no desire for sex and is unable to acheive any form of satisfactory erection. He also suffers from night sweats and various other symptoms and on watching 'Embarrassing Bodies' it all pointed to the Andropause. My husband reluctantly went to the GP at my request (he finds sexual problems embarassing to talk about) and had a blood test. The test was apparently 'normal' whatever normal is so we are now resigned to having a sexless marriage at quite a young age. The GP's are too quick to dismiss patients at the 1st test and are not prepared to look deeper.

My GP was dimissive too - my result was lower end of normal or top end of abnormal. I said I wanted to be referred - the consultant was dismissive too - said he didn't believe male menopause existed and that I was depressed and need to see a shrink. He asked for more blood tests to be done - important that to test for testosterone levels the blood test has to be taken before 10am and I went back and he has given me testosterone gel - It costs apparently £1 per day so only given a month to start to see if it has any affect. Tried first one today so hope it works. My advice would be don't take the first answer as GPs know little about this.

I put on a comment during the week and thought I would keep you up to date on my husbands appointment. He had his results and was told everything was normal. He was told that he could have a prescription for Viagra but would have to put up with the night sweats. I am not happy with this diagnosis and have suggested that he go back and get a second oppinion from his regular GP (who it is impossible to get an appointment with). Hopefully he might be able to do more.

My husband is 47 and for about the last 7 years has been unable to keep an erection. My mother mentioned this programme and suggested I look up Andropause. He has also been suffering from severe night sweats (last night he woke in a puddle of sweat and we had to change the sheets). I suggested that he go to the drs and mention his simptoms. Last week he went to have blood tests and tomorrow he is going back for the results. If I hadnt watched this programme I wouldnt have known about this condition so its well worth getting things checked out. I will keep you up dated on his progress. Many thanks to all those posted above as it has made us feel NOT ALONE.
