Becker’s Nevus

Becker's Nevus on the back

Actor, Richard Gere, has it all – the dashing good looks, the bankable acting talent, the fame, the fortune, the…Becker’s Nevus? Yes, he really does have it all, even a rare skin disorder! First documented in 1948 by U.S. dermatologist, Samuel William Becker, a Becker’s Nevus generally first appears as an irregular pigmentation of the shoulders or upper chest, which gradually enlarges and becomes thickened and often hairy. No treatment is usually necessary, except for cosmetic reasons. However, it’s worthy of note that Richard Gere has never concealed his Becker’s Nevus during movie love scenes. In An Officer and a Gentleman he felt comfortable enough to frolic around shirtless with Debra Winger and show the whole world his ‘hairy birthmark’. So if he doesn’t have a problem with it…

I have Becker's Nevus and I had a small test spot lasered and it didnt work. The doc used a hot laser and the test spot is darker, does anybody know if this is because I am half asian? The doc says that if the hot laser doesnt work he can try the the cold laser, I really hope it works. I hate this freaking condition

Laser treatment is very rarely successful with this skin condition. I know because I also had it done with less than optimal results. It faded a LITTLE bit. I'm considering getting a tattoo over it. :)

The treatment is possible with laser. But be warned that all kinds of laser will scar your skin permanently. Besides, it'll cost you quite some money. If you want it removed that badly, no one can stop you. But let's think of erasing some writing on a piece of paper. That writing might be gone, but we can still see it's an erased piece of paper. Besides, the writing might not be completely gone.

Since I was at late teen, I've got Becker's Nevus at most part of the left side of my chest. I have it more than 10 years now. I felt ashamed and always wanted it removed. However, I like swimming. One day I went to swim. I began to notice that no one really cared. No one even looked at it. Then I tried to be shirtless and exposed more of my upper body when I can (I have a lean and clean body except that part). Then again no one really cared about it at all. So please throw away your worries. At most if people notice, you'll be asked what it is and that's it. You've got to believe that your body is beautiful. Why worry on that little body part, while the rest is still fine. It's better to concern on how to stay fit and not overweight. We can just leave it there and live with it.

I have BN on the left side of my chest and was thinking of getting a tattoo to cover it up. Would there be any side effects from doing this?

I'v got it on my left shoulder and a little on my left arm (no hair), does anyone know if it can extend to the neck and face? Over the years it's grown in size so I'm really worried its going to get to my face. Also, if there is no possibilty of removing it completely, is there no way to stop it getting bigger? I know laser can help but I'v heard it can make the pigment get darker on asian skin?
