Becker’s Nevus

Becker's Nevus on the back

Actor, Richard Gere, has it all – the dashing good looks, the bankable acting talent, the fame, the fortune, the…Becker’s Nevus? Yes, he really does have it all, even a rare skin disorder! First documented in 1948 by U.S. dermatologist, Samuel William Becker, a Becker’s Nevus generally first appears as an irregular pigmentation of the shoulders or upper chest, which gradually enlarges and becomes thickened and often hairy. No treatment is usually necessary, except for cosmetic reasons. However, it’s worthy of note that Richard Gere has never concealed his Becker’s Nevus during movie love scenes. In An Officer and a Gentleman he felt comfortable enough to frolic around shirtless with Debra Winger and show the whole world his ‘hairy birthmark’. So if he doesn’t have a problem with it…

My son was born with Becker's on his right side of his body. It is on his back, chest and most of his right arm. He is almost three now. The pediatric dermatologist called it pigmentary mosiacism. It definitely gets darker when exposed to sun in the summer. He has dense blond fuzzy hair on his chest. When he was a newborn he had a spot there that would get raised and red (hematoma?) when he was upset which has gone away except for the fuzz. I am hoping that his whole BN does not get super hairy as he gets older because it covers a lot of area and I think it will bother him as it seems to bother most with this condition. Good luck to all of you out there with this condition.

Hi im 29 yes old and have BN. I first noticed it when i was 11 years old when it started out as a small mark on my back just under my shoulder then rapidly spread to my front chest and right arm. It was bothering me as i didnt want to take my shirt off at the beach or anywhere else so I decided to take action. I am currently undergoing the erbium laser treatment and the results are promising as the nervus is fading. I've been told that i may need to undergo 4-10 treatments due to the size. The skin does get redish afterwards but will get lighter in time. Even though its painful i'd recommend this treatment for anyone with BN looking for treatment. It is however very expensive. Hope this helps those looking for answers.

Hi John, may I know where did u undergone treatment at?

I've had BN on my arm for a while but since 1 year im undergoing laser treatment and it works really well. My doc said that it'll take 6-7 sessions before its completely gone and I have to wait 2 months between each session for the skin to heal. He's using a YAG laser. From what i've heard it wont work as well on dark skin as on bright. If you want to get rid of your BN find a laser clinique that uses the YAG laser and i'm sure that they can help you..

19 year old student from manchester here, i've had BN since i was 13, it started off as a palm size patch on my upper right back, and extended to my shoulder and upper arm area, hopefully it won't spread anymore as i've been told from the doctor that it reaches its peak once you're my age.. anyway i've just had a massive tattoo covering pretty much half of my back, and of course, BN, and everything's fine, no reaction or anything so if any of you aren't sure whether covering you BN with the tattoo is safe or not, then don't worry and go for it! :) feel free to ask me questions. oh and i've also got some photos to show so just ask me :)

Hey evryone i'm a 33 year old female and Well i think i may have BN. I can remember in the 3rd grade going to my pediatrition and him telling my mother to put Head&Shoulders on my arm everyday that this would clear the spot up. Ha what a joke! We did this for a week and At the end of the week my arm was swollen to 3 times the normal size and i had a horribly high fever, i was in so much pain! My mom finally took me to a dermatologist and they told her that they had no clue as to what it was. I was prescribed Retin-A that did absolutely nothing. Needless to say i have hated this spot on my arm for as long as i can remember, thankfully i have an olive complexion so i tan very easily wich has made it easier to hide my spot, because as long as i tan its not as noticeable it blends pretty well. It is still very hard for me to wear tank tops and strapless clothing im still very self conscious. I am however thinking of getting a large beautiful tattoo to cover up as much of my arm as i can. Dont know how well this will work but its worth a try considering people stare anytime my arm is visible so i might as well give em something beautiful to look at! Im so happy that i found this sight. I've wondered for so long what this is that i have, now i have a clue, so its off to the dermatologist i go. Oh and if it helps anyone else, i have tried waxing and i DONT recomend that at all it leaves bumps that can get infected just a bad situation all around. I do however shave my "spot" i have for years. It probably does not sound appealing but it gets rid of the hair. I shave my legs and my arm everyday i have a routine and its no big deal, although you have to be really careful and take your time in the beginning, but for me it was my only option the hair was just too much. I hope this helps someone else who might be struggling with this same problem.

I'm 31, female, asian. I have a small patch of BN on my upper right arm. I've had it since I was maybe 8 or 9. I asked my grandma then what it was, and she didn't know, too. But she advised me to rub garlic on it. And so I did...everyday... until I stopped doing it because it didn't bother me anymore. It hasn't spread very much, it's almost the same size ever since remember it. It just looks bigger when my gain a little weight, cuz the skin stretches a little. Anyways, we went to the dermatologist when was 11, and she told me what it was. She told me it would continue to spread, so I got scared, and it's not treatable. But I'm very thankful now, that it hasn't grown significantly. Who knows maybe the garlic helped. It wouldn't hurt to try. Hope this helps! :)
