Conditions

Bulimia

Eroded teeth

Bulimia can affect both men and women but statistically women are more likely to develop Bulimia than men. The condition results in sufferers binging on food, and then purging it from their bodies by being sick or using laxatives. This is usually carried out in private, as the sufferers will frequently feel guilty about their binge eating. Symptoms of the condition can include obsessive behaviour, over eating, scarred knuckles, depression and damage to the tooth enamel (from stomach acid). The causes of bulimia are difficult to pin down, and vary from sufferer to sufferer. Low self-esteem is one contributory factor, as is depression, stress mental health disorders. There is also some evidence of a genetic link. Treatment is long and complicated, normally beginning with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, but also potentially anti-depressants. Going to your GP early allows for the full range of treatments to be explored.

Its so comforting to know that other people are feeling the same way! Bulimia has been something I have struggled with for over 5years now, & has really started to affect my physical & mental health. I have been lucky in the fact that I haven't yet sunk underweight (currently entirely thanks to my wonderful boyfriend looking after me every weekend) but literally come within a lb of being so every week & am almost always ill. You are never alone! Doctors are often more understanding that you would expect, & trust me it is better to be happy than a living skeleton. Set yourself goals, ask another person to keep an eye on you after you eat to make sure you don't have a "silly episode", but above all, discover you own beauty, inside & out! Is it really worth years of hell to acheive a stick-figure & all the medical, social & mental complications that go with it? I am speaking to myself as well as you! DON'T be the person that an eating disorder makes you, you are worth so much more. ALWAYS believe you deserve the best! BE YOUR TRUE SELF, BEAUTIFUL, AND HAPPY! love to you all, & good luck! xxxxx

Hey, it's so good that people have been brave enough to write about their problems as it doesn't make us feel so alone. i have been bulimic for nearly 2 years now, its taken time but i have confided in my mum and boyfriend, however although they are supportive i still feel like they don't understand. it seems easy to say that im going to stop throwing up my food, but actually doing it is alot harder and when i dont do it, i feel myself getting fatter. It feels like a never ending battle am glad to know im not alone.xx

Hi, Im 41 and have had bulimia now since I was around 15 year old. I have been taking fluxotine now for around 12 years and it does help a little, however I find that the bulimia is still very up and down even after all this time! At the moment things are extremely bad as I have resorted to being sick in bags and bin liners to hide this. I'm sick in my room and also go out on my own, eat and make sure I have been sick into a bag in my car before disposing of it and coming back home! I live with my parents and teenage children and noone has a clue that I suffer with this condition. I have tried lots of things to try and take control but it never lasts. Can you suggest any other help? I took a couple of hypnotism sessions which did help at all and followed CBT also without success.

I've been bulimic since I was 14. I'm 31. I have 2 little girls of my own now. I've tried antidepressants, Cognitive behavioural therapy, counselling, nutritionists. Its not about weight-I'm a personal trainer !! But I'm now terrified for my long term health, and my daughters finding out. Whats the answer.....I cannot control myself, and I dont know who to tell. My husband left me because he couldn't handle it, and I am too scared to tell my new partner. No one knows. Except you....

I am a teacher who used to work in a very stressful school. I started being sick every morning, due to the stress. I got out of the that school, but ended up in an even more stressful situation - my children were diagnosed as autistic and my current headteacher was attempting to force me out of my job - which resulted in a full breakdown. To cut a long story short, I find that I become very nauseous when under stress, particularly in the morning. Although I have removed many of the causes of stress, my body seems to demand that I vomit when under a stress situation or am particularly tired. I can fully sympathise with bulemics, although my own problem is more about inner perception than outer appearence. The self-loathing of being depressive, combined with the action of adrenaline due to anticipation of stress, causes me to have a vomit reflex. On some occasions, vomiting has been the only thing I have had control of and was a representation of my feelings about myself and the life I have. I find myself welcoming the urge to vomit. It is something to be fought. Good luck to all of you who are living with the nausea, and are fighting against it. There are good days and bad days, but the fact we are resisting it is worth something. This is not a desire for being thin, but more due to self-loathing and stress. There is not much that can be done about this, but it must be fought. Sorry this sounds negative - just trying to prove my credentials. It is something to be fought. We shouldn't have to put up with it. Talk, complain, take medication. Just don't give in and make sure you stay healthy.

I am nearly 20 and had worries about my wieght, it started with anorexia. I have always been a healthy weight, around 8st for a 5ft 2 figure but after anorexia i dropped to 6 stone. All my friends, parents, workmates and boyfriend were very worried, soo i started eating more but went over the top and started to purge and it developed into full bulimia. I went to the doctors but they were no help at all so am trying to progress by myself. what i will say is, even though the help i seeked let me down, talking to someone is like the world lifting off your back and can make everything seem so much clearer, what im finding beneficial is doing something i love in my spare time like shopping or seeing my horse or going out with friends so that food is not my focus. Recovery takes time, but it will be worth it in the end :)

Hey LJ I mean it sounds like your having a pretty rough time atm, i suggest you tell your parents i mean they care and love you so surely they would help, write it down if its hard to talk to them. counselling is really good ask about it at your school as there is a free cousellor at schools which i saw and it helped me i was bulimic for 4 years and i was dead against it but i saw her for 4 months and now i very rarley do it, which is amazing for me, im 16 now and i can see a brighter future not sounding corney Lol im sure your parents know as a school wouldnt keep it from them as its the law to ring your parents maybe they feel you will just get over this but i dont think any parents really want to believe its happening to there child but honest talking helps, and yeah you have done fantastic dont get yourself down also there is a website 'beat' which is good i suggest you go on it you can email them and they help a lot however hard it is the sooner you get help the better everything becomes everything becomes clearer and a lot easier to beat this, its just like a phsyical illness and people should respect it like that and people dont so dont be ashamed by it. try your hardest i wish you all the best wishes and hope ive have sort of helped :D xxxxx
