Chancroid
If you ever travel to the tropical areas of Africa or Asia, you should make sure that the only thing you bring back to Blighty is an impressive tan; some enhanced cultural knowledge, and maybe a handcrafted ornamental gift. Because one thing that you won’t want to bring back is chancroid, which is a sexually transmitted infection – affecting both men and women – that can cause painful (often pus-filled) ulcers on your genitals. Although considered rare in the UK, the World Health Organisation has calculated that more than 9 million people are infected with chancroid each year. The open sores on your genitals can increase your risk of HIV infection, but the condition can be easily treated with antibiotics. There are no long-term complications if you fail to get treated quickly, but there may be some scar tissue left after treatment of the ulcers. Pleasant.
If you’re suffering from any of the conditions featured on this site and want to apply for an onscreen consultation with one of the EB team then you can find more details here >>
