Conditions

Corns

Corns

Corns are areas of dry, thick skin that develop to protect areas of your foot from constant pressure and rubbing. They are often very hard to the touch, and are frequently les sensitive than the rest of the foot due to the thickness of the skin. Although having a certain number of corns is normal (and frequently not painful) women who wear high-heels and ill-fitting footwear will often develop more corns. Treatment is relatively simple, and can be carried out by a podiatrist, who will remove the hard skin that surrounds the corn and then the actual centre. These corns will come back, however, unless changes are made to the distribution of pressure on the foot. For this you may require customised in-soles, or foam wedges.

Corns - What exactly are they? People say that having them means they look ugly or feel bad about themselves. This is true as I have many things on my feet which indeed look like corns however, I am scared about seeing the GP as people say they hurt and mine arent at the moment and I do not wish for them to start hurting. What shall I do about it?

Hi, I really do know what everyone is going on about. I am 34 and have a corn on the ball of my right foot, ive had it from a child. last year I went to see a chiropodist and was told it needed to be cut out every 6 weeks. This procedure was the most painful experiance of my life, up there with childbirth. I was also told it was to do with the presure on my foot, this makes no sense to me as I can not put any presure on the area where the corn is, resulting in my foot turning in from the ankle and giving me pain as well. I would definatly go for surgery to cut out the corn, I would prefere to have a hole in my foot and be on crutches for 6 months than have this continues pain and the pain of having it cut out every 6 weeks. Please help me.

I have alot of skin that builds up on the outside of my foot near my little toe. I have been going to a podiatrist for over 2 years now and all they have done is give me insoles and cut the skin off. But it just keeps appearing every 4 days and i do alot of sport so it is giving me trouble and hurting. I have learnt to cut the skin of myself but it is a real pain to keep doing it all the time! Also the "corns" have a black dot in the middle yet the doctors said they are not veruccas. What is this and is there anything to cure it??

I got a thing on my foot. It was round and slightly raised at first. Then it sort of popped and looked a bit like a volcano. Then dirt and fluff started entering it and I didnt know what to do. Soon it spread to the other toe and multiplied....i think it might be corns or varrucas ...but im really scared to tell someone about them ...what should i do ???

i also have 5 corns on my feet and they are the most painfull expeience ive ever had ,i cringe to put a pair of socks on and been known to fall to my knees after accidently stepping on a piece of grit in the road through the extreme pain ... i have had bone re-structure done in my right foot and had to have toes straigtened after deciding to walk on ends of toes due to the amount of pain from sole of foot.Only to find 12 weeks later they were back ... i have also had a surgey called electro surgery again to find 3 weeks later they came back. it actually feels now like i am only walking on my corns as i cant tell which part of the foot the pain is coming from.i have recently had custom made soles which have made hard skin form on my feet to the extreme that is has been known to bleed under the skin, and is very very sore my soles, heels, and toes are distribution extreme pain, it is fair to say that yes the chiropodist can remove them but i am nevr pain free for more than 2 days .. most people say they are pressure points and as long as pressure is there the corns will grow back, i feel personaly if thats the case drill a 10mm hole through the corn and remove the pressure .. i would prefer the hole in my foot than the current situation please could you help me?

Hi.I had my second toe on each foot straigtened when I was 13 years old, my feet were never the same again (whats going on there!Chidren are still growing at this age. But, i am told thats how they did things back then.I'm now 47) When I got to 30 thats when the corns appeard and started hurting. I have two corns under each foot all with nerve endings in them. And yes whilst i can appreciate they are caused by pressure,i feel having the opp at 13 didn't do any good either.. I've had another operation five years ago to straighten the toes again on the right foot. And no it didn't work. The foot Consultant said, by having the opp done it may realign the foot so I don't get the corns. But it was unsucessful, and needless to say i never bothered having the left foot done. One Chiropodist said,it was because i was born breech and may of had foot problems when i was a toddler. But i know of no such thing. The Consultant said it was to do with the way i walk. I go to the Chiropodist every two wks to get them reduced, but they can't touch the root as its too painful. Also i go to the steam room's once a week and use the pumice stone on them(this helps a lot)Another thing, since i stopped smoking 3 months ago my feet are nowhere near as bad as they were(the same thing happend when i stopped before)I feel these corns have ruined my life. Not been able to walk anywhere hardly. And with regards to going out on a evening time, well i don't bother now, whats the point i can't wear nice shoe's.THIS SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED AS A DISABILITY.good luck
