Conditions

Crohn’s Disease

MRI scan showing Crohn's disease

Crohn’s disease is an internal condition that can affect a sufferer externally. It occurs when the wall of the affected part of the gut becomes inflamed and the inflammation causes one or more of the following symptoms: pain, ulcers, diarrhoea, anaemia, anal fissures and rectal bleeding, loss of weight, loss of appetite, and feeling lethargic. Symptoms vary depending on the part of the gut affected and there are many options for treating this chronic, episodic, inflammatory bowel disease, although there is no known drug-based or surgical cure for it. The exact cause of Crohn’s Disease is not known, but it’s thought there may be a genetic link, as there’s some evidence that it runs in families (1 in 10 people with the condition have a close relative who also has it). Crohn’s Disease is more common in smokers and in women who use the combined oral contraceptive pill..

I've been suffering from chrons for the past 4-5 years at first i was told i had bad water infections and was sent awaii wiv medicine but at the age 11 i was 4-5 stone i went back a further 4 times to the doctor and was eventually admitted to boothes hall hospital in Manchester i suffered from stomach pains, loss of appetite and diarrhea i had test done and found out ma bowel wall was 3x to big so my body was not absorbing the nutrients i needed to grow! I am now 15 and it is under control i am on tablets to stop the symptoms and ensure milkshakes to help me put weight i have had one relapse of chrons and may only get one much later on in life. When i got the stomach pains i just thought it was nothing until after 2 weeks wen i started to do a diary of how often a day i got the pain which could be anything between 5-15 the onli thing tht eased thm was to breath deep n bend over with the pain!!
the sooner you get diagnosed the better the main reason i have chrons is tht it runs in the family so if it runs in urs mention it to ur doctor and thy can test you for it, the sooner its found the better :D xx

For the last 3 months i have been suffering with stomach pains, feeling sick every time i eat, diorreah and over two month an awful lot of blood in my stools.

I went to the doctor and have been refered to the hospital for my endoscopy.

I am really worried as i've always been fit and healhy. Ive always been very thin for me age yet eat lots more than my friends.

Im always tired and i dont know why im always feeling ill at the moment. Although i am very worried about the endoscopy i think if you feel that bad and that is the only way to get some help to feel better people who are suffering like me should go and get it done with.

Im 21 and dont want to live my life around feeling ill. For the person who said they are worried about geting swine flu i have it at the moment. My emune system is low due to the possible chrones and yet it is just like any other flu. MAKE SURE YOU GET TAMI FLU from your GP as it realy does work!

I am 27 & have noticed lately that my stools are white/pale & they look as if something is running through them. They are hard when they come out like this.
I have had a stomach upset lately but the stools were this way before I was ill. I have pain in my stomach also. Am I worrying about nothing?

hiya,

im a 14 yrs old and have been diagnosed with ulsarative chrones, im on a lot of medicationn & i just finished 6months of steriod treatment, starting at the higest 60mg for over 4 of the months, im now on a ''liquid diet'' witch is i cant eat for 8weeks, is there any way i can take my mind of off food??
i also suffer from depresion, and self harm very offten as a result, could you help please??

i have had crohns diease for about a year and i just was wondering if you can still have children ????

I am l4 years old.
well, i have been coming and going from the hospital for about 2 – 3 years now and they said it might be Oro-facial granulomatosis or crohns. I sometimes get diarrhea, but thats only like once every 3 months. when i go to the toilet, it hurts and sometimes it has blood on the outside of it. i was on the verge of being anemic, but i eat lots of iron now!! i dont normally get stomach pains. however my lip on one side keeps swelling up and this only happens if i eat chocolate.

i have had an ultra sound and a biopse of the back of my gum, because my gum was swelling over the back of my tooth.
they want to give me an anal examination and a camera down my throat.
and i havent had any weight loss or lost my appetite.
i feel like the doctors dont know what their going on about! any advice :D

my husband is 46 and spends alot of his time in the loo he gets up first thing he do is poo and its allways runny then with in the hour he goes again before u know it hes been 4-5 times then hell still have to go durin the day he some times has blood

I am 57 and have had crohns for 5 years. I have had 2ft of small intestine removed, and biopsies and 3 colonoscopies. I was on a very high dose of steroids but they didnt work, so now I am on Azathioprine which make me feel sick, along with 4 other pills 3 times a day. I have good days and bad days but am rather worried about Swine Flu, as I have low immunity, and wonder if I should apply for the flu vaccine when its available. I am 5ft 6 tall, and weigh around 9 stone, which is quite good for me, as I have been as little as 7st 10 when I first became ill.

I am 15 years old and last year i was diagnosed with Crohn's. It had been active for a year and i hadnt noticed the stomach pains, i thought it was just period pain. I became severly aneamic and failed to get my iron above 8 for ages, my GP told me it was due to periods but when i started to pass blood in my stools i was refered to the gastrointerology specialists, after a colonoscopy and a barium meal (both terrible experiences) i was diagnosed. Treatment is difficult for Crohn's because each person responds differently. I never wanted to go on steroids so instead i did the Modulen diet for six weeks (all you drink is this discusting baby's milk stuff that is nutritionally complete.) i found it so hard not to eat especially over christmas so i had hypnotherapy to help me which really helped. After the diet the pains had not gone and i was still passing blood and after another colonoscopy they said i needed the steroids. I was hospitalised for my stomach pains, they had become unbearable and it turned out I was the one in a million who can't respond to steroids, i took them oraly and had them introvenously and there was no effect.
They did another barium meal and found i had scar tissue along the small intestine and secum because my inflamation in the ileosecal valve had gone untreated for so long.It could only be removed and surgery was my only option. Before the operation i was hospitalised again for an infection and i saw a therapist too. My operation went well i have a few tiny scars that are healing well and ten days after i was back in school doing my french GCSE a year early :). Crohns disease is an autoimmune disease. i have no family history of crohn's but i do have relatives with other autoimmune diseases- like diabetes. When it's not active, i can live a near to normal life, i just need to settle back down to normal. People who are diagnosed with IBD are somtimes told that smoking is benifitial but NOT for Crohns disease. I must not smoke because it aggravates crohns inflamation even more and can lead to bowel cancer. Crohn's is quite embarrasing but there are organisations there to help and most people can live a normal life.

im 26 yrs old and for the last 3months or so ive been experiencing relly painful lumps and joint pain on my lower legs ive been to my gp several times now but to no avail she doesnt know either what it is and told me to keep an eye on it and take ibuprofen its really beginning to affect my every day life now and i dont know what to do if there is any one out there that can help me and has experienced similar symptoms please let me know thanks
