Conditions
Diabetes
Diabetes affects over 2 million people in the UK alone and many more worldwide. It has been a recognised condition for many thousands of years and was known as the ‘pissing evil’ in the 17th century, owing to the amount of sugar that was lost when urinating. It occurs when the body can’t utilise glucose (sugar) properly, either due to the lack of insulin in the body or the body not being able to utilise the insulin it has available. There are two types of diabetes, the most common is type 2 which affects 75% of UK sufferers and can normally be managed with dietary control, but the more serious is type 1 which usually involves needing regular insulin injections. The organ responsible for managing insulin is the pancreas, and type 1 diabetes is normally caused by its destruction or failure to function. For type 2 diabetes it is often a problem with the wider bodies sensors and receptors that fail to respond correctly to the production of insulin.

Hi, im 15 type 1 diabetic since i was 6. I have a kidney disease and many many other health conditions but i look perfectly healthy. My blood glucose levels are more than often extremally high, i alter each of my four injections to suit what i am eating yet my levels are still erratic. I am also suffering with random hypos which come on at anytime even if i have recently eaten, is there any reason for this? Or something i can do to help prevent these? Many thanks, Jess x
My boyfriend is 21 and has had diabetes type 1 since he was a baby. He doesnt seem to have accepted it though. He hates injecting and refuses to take 4 doses and sticks to two even though his doctors advised him. He refuses to consider the pump which isn't a problem but he needs to be nagged by me and his mom to take his insulin and eat properly. I;ve had chats with him but he says I dont understand because I dont have diabetes. I just cant get him to see that he needs to take control of his life and that we are only nagging because we love him. any ideas?
i am 13 years old and i think i may possibly have diabetes as i drink loads wee more often frequently feel sick and sometimes dizzy but also i am tired more now. what should i do?
heyy im 13 and I have diabetes type 1 and i was diagnosed with it last year in september. Last week I went to my hospital appointment and They have recommended an insulin pump because they said that its like my diabetes is taking over me and im not taking over it due to my blood levels going up and down. im not sure if i should have a pump it seems a bit scary im not sure what to do !!!! Please help... :D x
my son is almost 13 and is type 1 diabetic he was diagnosed in 2007,his bloods at moment are a little erratic but thats to be expected with hormone changes in the body. he has been offered the pump but has refused it, he's on multi injections and is comfy with that, talk to ur diabetic nurse in more detail or to someone who has the pump b4 u make a deision, its what u feel comforable with, we do know someone with a pump and its right for her. once you move to adult services it is a little harder to get the pump,(in this area where we live anyway) if u change ur mind. good luck with what you decide to do, your still learning as we are, diabetes does change your life but being diabtic in the first yr did rule us but only cause we let it now we rule it, once again good luck.
If u have type 1 diabetes and your blood sugar levels r all over the place i would recemend asking about the pump. im 14 nd i have been i diabetic for 3 years, my sugar levels have been really high like 37- really low like 1.2! one day i had a hypo at 1.7 nd i couldnt use my right hand/arm. the doctors were really scared for me nd said i should go on the pump. it's really great! my diatition once said it was something i wouldnt want to have but actually it's more flexable and not as anoying as having injections. I feel much better nd i have to thank my doctors for that.

Hi, im 17 and a friend at school has told me that he thinks I may have diabetes. I realy dont think I do but I have noticed I can get shaky and light headed if I havent ate anything for a little while also I can feel quite sweety and adjitated. I thought this was just due to hunger but I cant help having the thought in the back of my mind that it could be related to diabetes
I am 15 years of age and my Dad has recently bought an accu-chek to check his blood due to the amount of tablets he takes because of his disability. But today for some reason, I decided that I would check my blood and it turns out my blood was 6.2 I am now slightly concerned that my blood levels are too high? Is it possible that I may have type two diabetes?
You don't have diabetes. The normal glucose range is between 4-7. I am a type 1 diabetic, believe me I have had blood sugars above 33. That's high!
I have been a type 1 diabetic for 28 years i try to keep everything under control but i know i need re educated on food etc as in the dafne course but living in the republic of ireland these things take time and 2 years on i am still waiting for some sort of course to help me relearn about my body, nothing has been properly explained to me about food for 28 years, within the last 2 months i have a discolouration appear on the back of my left hand it is just slightly darker in colour between my thumb and index finger does this have anything to do with my diabetes?
im 27 and just had my 3rd baby (shes 5 months) i had gestational diabetes it went as soon as i had her bt over the last 3 weeks its come back and my levels are between 11 - 19 through the day i was started on metformin but it made me sick so i was put on slow releasing metformin but i was still sick so now there trying me on gliclazide but my levels are still so high im sleeping loads its really upsetting me that i feel so useless and im trying 2 look after three kids and a home does any one else feel this way or know what the next thing they,ll try?
i have type 2 diabetes but the meds im on arent really touching it so i think i have to start on insulin. i always feel tired and sleep all the time. i can sleep up to 10 hours a day some days and it makes me very depressed and useless. its really hard work and i find that i am really getting no help even after nearly 3yrs. i am a single mum with 2 kids and i find everything so exhausting. i know exactly how you feel.
on friday my sugar levels wldnt drop any lower than 20 and before bed it was 24.2 i had enough so i went to hospital they checked my kidney function which is fine so they finally started me on insulin im taking mixtard 10 units am and 6 units pm bt i do believe il have 2 increase them bt i finally feel im getting help it only took a 4hr wait in a&e till 2.30am 2 get what i needed!!!! im just so fed up of falling asleep when im supposed 2 b playing wiv my kids and being 2 scared 2 eat!!
I made the decision not to let this illness control me but that I would control it, so far so good, with my blood sugar levels averaging out between 4 & 7. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 10yrs ago and didn't really know anything about the illness at the time. Luckily the Diabetic team at the hospital were brilliant and walked me through understanding insulin dosage v's food intake/exercise etc and now it's just second nature. It really really annoys me when people confuse the different types of diabetes though and I think it's because the numbers 1 & 2 don't mean anything to people. There needs to be more info out there for people to get a better understanding, especially in schools and clarification about the different types of diabetes and why they're different!!
