Diabetes

Diabetes affects over 2 million people in the UK alone and many more worldwide. It has been a recognised condition for many thousands of years and was known as the ‘pissing evil’ in the 17th century, owing to the amount of sugar that was lost when urinating. It occurs when the body can’t utilise glucose (sugar) properly, either due to the lack of insulin in the body or the body not being able to utilise the insulin it has available. There are two types of diabetes, the most common is type 2 which affects 75% of UK sufferers and can normally be managed with dietary control, but the more serious is type 1 which usually involves needing regular insulin injections. The organ responsible for managing insulin is the pancreas, and type 1 diabetes is normally caused by its destruction or failure to function. For type 2 diabetes it is often a problem with the wider bodies sensors and receptors that fail to respond correctly to the production of insulin.

if you are giving needles and you find it hard to remember to inject you're self ask your doctor/ diabetic nurse to tell you about insulin pumps..i have had mine for just over a year now and it has changed my life completely, at 12 i used to whey only 5 1/2 stone over the year i have had my pump i have put on weight and i feel so much healthier in myself i now whey 7.1 stone and i am so much more confident i can do more things freely now and i would highly recommend asking your doctor if you could be concidered for one :)

i am 16, and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when i was 9, i wont lie, i didn't have good control over it at the beginning and used to flush my insulin down the toilet, still to this day i have very bad control over it and have out on alot of weight, my blood suagrs are generally high, so im confused as to why im putting on wieght as i seem to have ketones alot! does anyone know why this is?

I forgot to mention that my dad died of diabetes and I am 36 y/o.

Hello. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on October last year. I was told by the diab nurse to do urine test everyday by using diastix. The thing is there was a time when I checked my first catch before going for a blood test. The stick says negative but a couple of days after when I met with my GP, I asked the result and it said it was 7.2. I am not on metformin yet as I am very hesitant to take meds now. I have been on statin and hypertension meds since I was diagnosed but the thing is I feel and see some not good side effects. Another thing is I do exercise everyday for more or less than an hour but there is no change in my weight. I have tried asking for a diet pill or orlistat but my GP does not want to prescribe the meds. What should I do? a) should I take metformin or push for the diet pill?

hi im 15 years old and my diabetes control is great. i am on an insulin pump which controls my diabetes past my expectations my HBA1C is now 6.2%. Ask your diabetes specialist for more information about them.

Hello
I'm 17, both grandparents on both sides of the family have diabetes and so does my mum.
Do i have a really high chance of getting it?
:(

I just finished watching Embarrassing teenage bodies where the boy was worried about his diabetes etc
I wanted to leave a comment to let both him and others know that diabetes does NOT have to control your life. I am 18 years old, have type one diabetes and I participate in sport at a competitive level where I train 10 times a week and sometimes even more, I monitor my blood sugar levels regularly and record the results ( which i do admitt i find quite fustrating!)
At the end of the day, yes you may have may suffer from diabetes, but it isn't the end of the world, and things could be alot worse!
Even though I do alot of exercise and have to take large amounts of insulin due to large consumptions of food, I have never fainted or been hospitalised which I hope to keep up.
I would love to hear from other people and their experiences, especially those who are involved in sport.

i have noticed my self drinking a lot, going to the toliet alot and i sleep a go 12 hours a day unless i force myself awake , then threw out the day my eyes feel realy heavy and legs ache..

I am 19 years old and I have type one diabetes. I am on insulin injections twice a day, my diabetes specialist wants me to go on three a day soon due to my sugar glucose level. When I got diagnosed my bloods where 35.5 and I went into my local hospital all bubbly. My bloods are still high but my average is 10-15 at the moment. I am only newly diagnosed. My father has type one diabetes as well. So I know a lot about it all but it still gets me down when it comes to injecting and keeping up with keeping off temptations. I know I should get control of it now because I am scared of the future, but I don’t want to be the ‘odd’ one out when I am with friends when we go out to the cinema or have a DVD night in and their drinking wine and eating chocolate and sweets. I know I still eat all the bad things but I just don’t want to come to terms with it at the moment. I don’t have a lot of hypos due to my high levels of sugar and I have my parents and the diabetes team nagging at me to cut down, so I just do it more because I feel like it is taking control of my life because I have to change things. It does scare me when it comes to the future and I worry if I have children they will get it and I honestly don’t want them to. I’d advice people who have diabetes to take the professional advice and I am trying to now to try and give my future of my control over this condition the best I can.
