Diabetes

Diabetes affects over 2 million people in the UK alone and many more worldwide. It has been a recognised condition for many thousands of years and was known as the ‘pissing evil’ in the 17th century, owing to the amount of sugar that was lost when urinating. It occurs when the body can’t utilise glucose (sugar) properly, either due to the lack of insulin in the body or the body not being able to utilise the insulin it has available. There are two types of diabetes, the most common is type 2 which affects 75% of UK sufferers and can normally be managed with dietary control, but the more serious is type 1 which usually involves needing regular insulin injections. The organ responsible for managing insulin is the pancreas, and type 1 diabetes is normally caused by its destruction or failure to function. For type 2 diabetes it is often a problem with the wider bodies sensors and receptors that fail to respond correctly to the production of insulin.

I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 months ago . But for over 12 months I have had erectile dysfunction and total loss of labedo . I know this is probably related but my sex drive and desire has totally gone. I very rarely get an erection and I have no interest or desire for sex or masturbation. Its starting to get me down as I use to have a healthy normal sex life and all interest in that kind of thing has totally disappeared. Any help or advice welcome. Im 45 and feel as if that part of my life is over.

My names Tracey I'm 43 and I have had Diabetes Insipidus since May last year. It just happened for no reason. I start drink and weeing every 20 mins. I was diagnosed in November after a been deprived of water for 6 hours in which they had to stop as I loss 9lb. Im also on desmopressin. Its nice to hear from someone.

I have a issue with the part of my body around the belly button... I used to inject a lot there, but stopped a good year and half ago when I noticed that I have a bulge of fat around it... No exercise I do makes it smaller, it is not part of the lower or upper abdomen! It affects my confidence as I cant wear normal jeans as they dig in. All the doctors say is that I should stop injecting and the site should clear up, and as I already mentioned I have stopped injecting there over a year and a half ago! Anyone else with this issue? or no any exercises that I can do to make it go down?

I have type 2 diabetes and my father and all of his siblings have had late onset type 2 diabetes and died from cancer of the pancreas. I believe that they got cancer first that brought about the diabetes. My doctor refused to let me have a scan when I was first diagnosed. the staff in the diabetic clinice make suggestions that I should walk to work without first acknowledging that I work 50 miles away from home and a round trip of 100 miles would n't get much work done. I feel very well people comment that I look very well but the doctor would like to make me feel ill by prescribing tablets that make me very ill. I have never had a hypo or any other symptoms. I think a lot of rubbish is talked about diabetes and they get ticks in boxes which is why they have reduced the sugar level from 10 to 7. They won't be happy until we have all been diagnosed and they can meet their unrealistic targets. A specialist treating my Aunt has now acknowledged the unusual family history and carrying out research into why so many of us suffer with this. The outcome will be interesting

i feel completely the same. i'm 19, have had it for 6 years. i've got a pump and have had it for 6 months. i had to really fight for it and it was supposed to be the miracle cure...i can't cope. it makes me so depressed :( my hospital are so awful that they lost all my notes and have yet to officially tell me i have insulin resistance (it was diagnosed seperately by doctors), although they have mentioned it to my mum. i have had kidney problems for over a year yet have only just found out due to a blood test from a seperate doctor. i despair! why do you find it so hard?

hi, im 17 and have had type 1 diabetes since i was 9, I'll be the first to admit i've done wrong, when i first got it i used to flush my insulin down the toilet and still sweets out of the cupboard, but a few years ago it go so bad that i fell into a coma, when i see what my bad ways were doing to my family it knocked me into reality, yeah i have diabetes bu there are so many people worse off, and diabetes can be controlled, you just have to remember that the more you abuse you insulin and cheat now, he worse it affects you in later life! i have seen my friends nan lose her eye sight and her left leg because she didn't use her insulin properly when she was younger. I am now being considered for the new "pump" which is basically a small needle that goes under your skin and you leave it in for 2-3 days, and basically it releases your long acting insulin throughout the day and you just enter into a small machine attached by a wire to the needle, how much carbs you are eating and it calculates how much insulin your body needs and gives a small bonus for the food, the pump is basically a way forward and is going to make managing diabetes much easier, but you need to have go control to use it. well i just wrote this to let people know you CAN control diabetes, and you can lead a very normal life, and as for the people saying "i just wish i could be normal" you are as normal as you feel, you are human, you have a minor illness but that doesn't need to change who you are. i had to eat in class, but i didn't let what anyone said get to me, because i and you are just as normal as them, remember that no one has the right to bully you xxx

every one should get an insulin pump. i have had mine for about a year now and it has been one of the best decisions i have ever made. at first i was apprehensive because i didnt want something attached to me for the entire time. but after a while i realized that i have my phone on me all the time and that i would get used to it just the same as that. and after a while i have realised that one of the reasons that my control was so bad before was that i didnt have my pen on me all the time. however the NHS is reluctant to give them to any one because they are much more expensive to maintain. they even want to try and get people to revert back to injections. i have had diabetes for 7 years and it hasnt stopped me doing any thing that i want to do. i can drink and travel and all the things that i would have done any way. seriously talk to your doctor about the insulin pump. it has changed my life for the better
