Onycholysis

Onycholysis of the toenail

Onycholysis is the separation of the fingernail or toenail from the nail bed, but mercifully doesn’t involve a masked torturer with a pair of pliers demanding a confession from you! It is, in fact, a gradual and painless process, which is most commonly caused by trauma. However, additional causes for this separation of the nail from the bed can be: psoriasis, fungal infection, the side effects of medication, adverse effects to chemicals, such as nail polish remover, or medical conditions, such as thyroid dysfunction. This nail condition can affect people of any age, sex or race, but appears to be more common in adults and in women. Prevention is usually better than cure, and the chances of getting Onycholysis can be reduced by: keeping nails short; keeping the nails dry (wearing rubber gloves in water); and avoiding frequent exposure to chemical such as nail polish remover.

I had this a few years ago now, however it was diagnosed as an 'ingrown tow nail'. I have read up on it and Onycholysis is what I had, not what the doctor called an ingrown toe nail. But I am embarrassed about my left big toe nail, and hate wearing flip flops in hot weather, because people give me funny looks when they see the condition of my left toe nail.

The nail got so infected and over a very long peroid of time, due to the surgeries being packed full for a few months. That when it was finally my turn, they had to operate and give me needles in my feet (both feet, the right toe was infected too, however the right one is back to normal now) in order to numb the horrific pain! After the operation, I noticed a bit of nail still left in the middle of the nail bed, it was no longer attached to my cuticle anymore. I thought it was strange, but thought 'maybe thats how they do it'. And now, my left toe nail has stopped growing. I have a small, thick, yellow, rigged toe nail, and only half of it too!!

It's so embarrassing, what can I do to get it back to normal? I know I can't get it completely back to normal, as the tip of my toe where the nail was attached to the nail bed, the skin has grown over normally just like the skin is on the end of your finger tips.

What is there to do?

I have had that problem with my toe for 3 years now.
It puts me down and i don't wear sandles or like getting my feet out.
I really want to get rid of it but i have no idear how.
My dad told me i should cut my nail down but i will have to do it for the rest of my life.
Is there any other way that i can get rid of it?

i have had a toenail removed due to an ingrowing nail, the nail bed at the time was burnt out to stop any re-growth this was about 10 years ago and ever since it has not re-grown, this is becoming a huge issue in my daily life as it has caused masive confidence issues is there any type of surgery that i can have to replace with an artificial nail ?

i have some sort of infection on my big toe. It bleeds alot and is a big lump on the side of my big toe. It hurts when it gets banged or stood on and generally alot of clear liquid leaks out of it. ive tried putting antiseptic creams on it and it got better but then it burst and started all over again. i really dont want to see a doctor about it but my mum knows and thinks i should so i keep avoiding it. HELP ME!

My husband has this mysterious foot condition that 2 GP's and a skin professional cannot identify. it starts as several small blisters appear on the sole of one foot (it doesn't spread), they become very pressurised as they grow and they are filled with clear fluid even though it looks yellow (if you prick it with a needle it refills quickly), then within a week or so the fluid disappears and the blistered skin becomes dry and grey/mouldy in colour, like a scab, and eventually will fall off. Only to reappear after a month or so. Does anyone else had anything similar sounding???

I have a fungas big toe nail. And I think i have acted too late to get it repaired. I do not want to go on any more drugs as these will simply harm my liver and make the doctors richer. I would ask others to act quicker before it spreads

i can gladly say im not suffering as bad as any of the other entries but as a constant nail biter i am suffering from horribly dry flaky skin ariund my finger nails which is very unattractive. i have tried moisturisers like vaseline intensive car and E45 as recommended by my doctor but still no good. i have run out of ideas….
