We fart when we’re awake, we fart when we’re asleep, and we even fart when we’re dead. So, if you’ve been told that the Queen doesn’t fart, don’t believe a word of it! On average, most people pass gas 15 times a day, but anything up to 40 times in one day is considered normal.

The food we eat is digested and absorbed in the small intestine. Wind is produced by the digestive system as enzymes and bacteria break down carbohydrates and proteins in your food. Of course, certain foods can provide a little extra firepower, such as beans, cauliflower, cabbage, kidney beans and artichokes. In such instances, it might be wise to distance yourself from your nearest and dearest.

Some people find that yoga can help to reduce the symptoms of mild digestive issues. You can watch a yoga video tutorial for digestion here >

I seem to pass a lot of wind and find it very uncomfortable after eating and have to use a hot water bottle to sooth whilst digesting. Most recently, the pain in my lower back after eating is unbearable! I excercise daily, eat very healthily and don't eat much bread as I initially thought that was the problem. Is it most likely to be another food type which is causing this?

I pass wind everyday I'd say over 100 times and the smell is frighteningly bad. When I have a poo nobody can enter the bathroom for another hour because the smell is literally unbearable. It is causing problems with my relationship and I think she is going to leave me because I stink!! I have 3 showers a day just to try get rid of some of the smell but that doesn't work. When I poo my bum hole hurts more than anything. I walk funny for about an hour after my poo's because of the pain. All I eat is chicken is this the issue?

The chicken is definitely part of the problem! You need fibre: weetabix, fruit, vegetables etc.! A more balanced diet should help you out, if not after a month or two, then see a medical professional. But give your body the food and water it needs, and give it some time to register the change :)

I see questions, but no answers. Are the answers posted elsewhere? I have read elsewhere that eating some fennel and caraway seeds help lower amount of passing gas, also crushing fennel seeds with hot water and drinking as tea. I see nothing here advising those suffering with flatulence. I intend to try the fennel and/or caraway.

I highly recommend drinking hot lemon water first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything else. Squeeze one whole lemon into a mug and then add the lemon itself. Poor hot water over wait to cool and drink the entire cup. It's not the best tasting drink but really helps with passing wind. I've been told doing this and have been told that it lines your stomach and have to say it really works.

Hi I have been suffering with really bad wind for about 4 years now. I am only 23 years old and it's taking over my life this should not be happening to me so young. I pass wind all the time it feels like I have no control over my wind movements. I stink all the time it smells like I just pooped myself really embarrassing to go out and be social everybody wimping there nose and sniffling complaining about the stink and they all now who it is because every time I hangout they no that it's going to stink and make fun. I have no self confidence anymore iv got bad anxiety because of this. I have seen a doctor and a Colonoscopy was done. Everything was fine with a little inflamation at the anus. Doctor said I was fine and sent me home. I don't think the doctor believed in my story. I still suffer with bad wind and now I'm out of options. Please help I don't know what to do anymore.

You're most likely intolorant to something. For anyone suffering this, you honestly need to look at your diet. Sweeteners, particularly anything like sorbitol or manitol STAY WELL AWAY FROM THEM. Eggs, certain veggies, wheat, gluten are terrible for that. Dairy is something i would suggest most people to avoid. You sound like you have a lactose intolerance problem, you could also have fructose malabsorbtion(where you cant eat fruits, things like onions and garlic because of the sugars in them-look up FODMAPs online) or type into google how to reduce flatulance for a nice list of foods to avoid. You need to eliminate EVERYTHING bad first then slowly introduce offending foods, this is called an ELIMINATION DIET, you can look all of this up online or ask your doctor to refer you to a dietician. I dont think anyone can ever completely eliminate wind but i suffered from it a lot, i found dairy was the worst along with eggs and fructose, onions are TERRIBLE. You absolutely must, on this kind of diet, keep it clean, healthy and always read the backs of labels for potential allergens and, if its say, onions, for example, it may say on the packet "onion powder" so you've got to keep an eye out. I cannot stress enough that sweeteners are a no no and unfortunately that means cutting out chewing gum and certain candies out entirely. I hope you get this message, try what ive said, it worked very, very well for me so go for it! and tell your friends to get over it, hopefully, after a few days of your elimination diet, you can pretty much see a MASSIVE reduction in wind/flatulance Justin, literally a few days, its really worth it, good luck!

Try hot lemon water first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything else. Let me know if it works for you?

I used to be like that for many many years. I got eventually diagnosed with ceoliac disease

Hi i had a simillar problem and i had it for four years too. This problem led to depression and I lost all my friends and stuff. And in the end I ended up having a bacteria called hpylori. Yes it is normal to have flatulence and the farts that u hav no control over... I HAD THE SAMEE its called ai involuntary flautulence. Trust mee it got way better for mee dont woryy.

I don't know what to do, my digestive system is in chaos, I have bloating and bouts of wind and I have tried everything. I have changed my diet to dairy & gluten free and stopped smoking and gave up all fruit juice and fizzy drinks but nothing seems to work. My confidence is very low and I don't want to leave my house. I have become very isolated lately and am seriously considering leaving my job as I work in a public atmosphere and really struggling to cope. I have had this problem for about the last ten years but in the last twelve months it's got to the point I can't cope anymore. I'm going to see my doctor tomorrow. I do take probiotics but they don't seem to help. X

FODMAPS-look it up, it could be fructose malabsorbtion, a lot of foods included in the list of foods to avoid, particularly onions and garlic, have a look, DONT TAKE PROBIOTICS and avoid eggs if you can(check food labels, they're in everything) Good luck and dont despair, there will be some sort of food/medication causing it, you just need to find out what!

I suffer from constipation and have for a while, however I take Dulcoalx tablets (which my GP approves of), however when I pass gas it can be really smelly and my family tend to complain. Wondering whether it's the Dulcolax tablets (which is what my mum kinda thinks) or if its just what I eat????

You should see a doctor and get checked out for colon cancer which is what I had.
