Flatulence

Doctor examining a patient's bloated stomach with suspected Flatulence

We fart when we’re awake, we fart when we’re asleep, and we even fart when we’re dead. So, if you’ve been told that the Queen doesn’t fart and that women’s gusty contributions are accompanied by angelic harp music (and smell like flowers), don’t believe a word of it! On average, most people pass gas 15 times a day, but anything up to 40 times in one day is considered normal. The food we eat is digested and absorbed in the small intestine. And wind is produced by the digestive system as enzymes and bacteria break down carbohydrates and proteins in your food. Of course, certain foods can provide a little extra firepower, such as beans, cauliflower, cabbage, kidney beans and artichokes. In such instances, it might be wise to distance yourself from your nearest and dearest.

I fart loudly with no warning to myself so I can't squeeze my anus to (maybe) make it stop. There is (usually)no order. It doesn't matter if I have had anything to eat or drink. It happens all the time. I can't go out in public. What can I do to stop this and get my life back?

Hi, i`m 15 and ever since I turned 13 I`ve had bad flatulence. It started at school without me knowing until people started to say something smells. I soon found out it was me. I`ve been living with this for 2 years and people are now know. This has affected me horribly socially. But here are more symptoms, if anyone know`s what`s wrong with me please help, my parents don`t even take me seriously -Bad gas That goes on all day. -It gets to the point I hold it in and it comes out, which is even worse.(even if i let the gas pass, it would go on non-stop all day) -Lot`s of the time I don't even feel it. -I can only truly let the gas pass when I`m home(which means running to my room right after school) -If i`m in public and try to let it go I cannot, it will linger for a long time. -It gets so bad I cannot ride the bus, or be in a public place without everyone covering their noses -When i`m in my room, i can be so gassy that it fills the room, and the smell doesn't leave for like an hour. -I cannot wear pants/ or jeans without feeling extremely uncomfortable.(which means I wear shorts 24/7) -If I wake up too early I the gas will be significantly worse And one more thing, for some reason; On some day`s like when i sleep in and do nothing i`m gasless, or even once in a while on normal days i do not have gas. I`ve tried many different diets without any help. Please help me, I need to know if there is anything to help me, my parents think i`m a joke.

Have you tried charcoal tablets you can get them from boots, or go to the doctors and tell them exactly how you feel you could have food intolerance to certain foods, milk or any dairy don't just give up make your doctor do tests for you. Good luck pet :)

Hi Jamie, I have experienced the same syptoms and experiences since I was in the 10th grade. Am now 44 yrs. old. It really has had a devastating affect on my life. When I was growing up, I felt all alone. I hope since you see your not in it by yourself that it brings you a little comfort. I'm going to try fennel seeds and caraway seeds to see if this will help my situation. If it does, I will let you know. Good luck and hopefully in the near future doctors will do more research on this matter, since so many people seem to suffering from this.

Whenever my boyfriend goes to the toilet he sits there for 15 minutes at least excessively farting. I am sure this isn't normal. Advice?

Hi, I have a 7 year old daughter who has really bad smelly wind and it seems to be all of the time, school have even commented on the problem along with some of our family and friends. She is at the age where it is becoming embarrassing for her. She is of healthy weight/height and eats well. She dosnt like fruit except bananas and apple's and will only ever drink water. I really need some help on how to control things a little better as this has been going on fornearly 2 years. I thought it would of cleared up by now. I feel if I take her to the doctors they will just say I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Pleeeeease help :)

Hi I had this problem until I went to a naturopath and he told me to give up gluten and it has solved the problem - these days there are lots of gluten free products and the best bread that I have found is Zehnder which is sold in IGA.

My farts really stink, it can be worse if i've eaten spicy food, or drunk ale. But some days it seems to be for no reason. Could it be a sign of something serious?

Be proud of that my son and keep your head held up high

I bloat when I eat, stomach gurgles and hurts all the time, changed diet to a healthier one, fruit, veg etc, stools turned yellow and sometimes white. Told the doctor and he laughed at me and said he has never heard of anyone's stools changing to paler or white through healthier diet. Said it should pass but that was 3 months ago. Has anyone got any answer, the wind I get smells bad and is uncontrolable

Take a sample show him , how dare he laugh ! My daughter had this problem and ended up it was down to Vit B 12 deficiency

My partner has something similar (except her poo turns black due to blood being expelled). Do you have to get blood and iron transfusions? Please reply to me if the doctors find out what is wrong because the doctors in NZ are stumped with what to do with my girlfriend

Stools can be yellow because bile is deconjugated by bacteria in your small intestine. This bacteria also causes flatulence. I know this because I to suffer from uncontrollable flatulence and yellow stools. It's really horrible, ruins my life. both of these symptoms went when I was given a course of antibiotics for a skin condition. Needed two different types of antibiotics for the symptoms to go-amoxicillin and flucloxacillin. Really hope this helps, I'm really struggling to convince my doctor this is the case.

Also eat rice as it doesn't ferment in your gut. Really can't describe how much this has helped me.I hope it works for you to!

I would take a sample in as 'silver coloured stools are a sign of pancriatic cancer!!! And I've never heard of someone having white ones!

I am 18 years old and for the past 10 weeks I have had non stop flatulence and its getting really ridiculous, I can't go out in public without feeling the need to trump every 2 minutes and it is really getting me down and it Is making my stomach quite tender to touch, has any one got any advice for me I feel to embarrased to go to the doctors about it!. Thankyou,

Amy, pain in stomach not good sign.. Ten weeks too long...Is your bowel motions changed in colour , an or become very dark... Maybe bacteria or infection in intestines., who knows.... Go to the doctor, its not like you are showing them anything, you are just talking... Leave this go on and you may well make a problem worst.... Take someone with you, as a support person, it makes all the difference... Ask for woman doctor also, it will make you feel more at ease... just go Amy. Get this weight off your mind... Take care

It turned out that I struggled with food intolerances, if you can work out what they are , then you can eliminate them.

I have been getting pain in lower right abdomen that can be tender to touch but as soon as I pass wind or go for a poo it goes, should I be worried?
