Flatulence

Doctor examining a patient's bloated stomach with suspected Flatulence

We fart when we’re awake, we fart when we’re asleep, and we even fart when we’re dead. So, if you’ve been told that the Queen doesn’t fart and that women’s gusty contributions are accompanied by angelic harp music (and smell like flowers), don’t believe a word of it! On average, most people pass gas 15 times a day, but anything up to 40 times in one day is considered normal. The food we eat is digested and absorbed in the small intestine. And wind is produced by the digestive system as enzymes and bacteria break down carbohydrates and proteins in your food. Of course, certain foods can provide a little extra firepower, such as beans, cauliflower, cabbage, kidney beans and artichokes. In such instances, it might be wise to distance yourself from your nearest and dearest.

I am currently undergoing tests for bowel cancer & didn't have any problems until a few nights ago I seem to be very windy & nothing will help to ease the problem. Whatever I eat I end up going to the loo I drink a lot of water (boiled or cold) I also take Movicol 2x daily & the pain around my gut is still there. Is there anything I can do to relieve what I hope is wind. I've even resorted to taking a senna tablet & although it cleared me out the dull ache still remains. In the past I've had a bowel resection as my small bowel was severely blocked. Please help Thank you

I have tried eating or drinking yoghurt. This seems to help with digestion. But what really helps with pain from wind is having strong ginger tea made from actual ginger root, boil it up and drink. Add sugar if you want it to be more palatable.

I am currently suffering from constipation. I have bloating, flatulence , pain in left side like a stitch pain, gurgling also in the left side. I use to suffer from constant diaholrea but after starting various pain meds for arthritis this changed to constipation. I have been waiting since December to see an nhs specialist. I have bouts were I lose weight very quickly and have to increase my food intake, then I start to gain weight and cut my intake, I am currently eating 1400 calories a day and still gaining weight. I have lost 6 stone in the last 2 years, I did want to lose weight but it has always followed this pattern of extreme weight lose then weight gain. I am worried about this, I am seeing my dr regularly but I am basically waiting for the appointment to see the gastrointestinal consultant.

Well welcome in my world . I suffer on IBS and I also have a problem with my wind . Its make my life sooo complicated , I dont sleepover or nobody sleep in my house . I dont want to have a partner coz Im so embarrased of my problem. Nobody will stand that smell . Im so desperate to have my life back .

There's a medication called mevabeven, my son takes this for his offence wind and it helps almost immediatly. Ask your g.p. about it. It also takes away the stomach spasms too.

I had most of my rectum removed due to a cancerous tumour being found there last year. I had to wear a colostomy bag and had it reversed at the start of this year. I was told that it would take around a year till my bowels returned till anywhere near normal. But another added thing is my farts are very smelly which is embarassing. No matter what I eat my farts seem to be very smelly. Is this due to most of my rectum being removed and is there anything I can do to reduce the smell?

I suffered with constipation a few years but finally through diet and supplements I have been regular for the last few months. The last week I have had bloating, pains in my left pelvis and although not constipated, my stools are being passed less frequently. Also I have a lot of gas and when I do eventually pass it I'm also passing clear to light brown mucus. What can I do to stop this?
