Folliculitis

Folliculitis on the face

‘Barber’s itch’ sounds like something you might catch after an ill-advised sexual encounter with your hairstylist, but it’s actually another name for folliculitis. Also known as ‘hot tub folliculitis’, this condition manifests itself as small, white-headed pimples around one or more hair follicles, which, although itchy, cause little pain. However, deep or recurring folliculitis may need medical treatment. There are some simple treatments you can apply yourself, such as placing a warm, moist flannel over the affected area; trying an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to help soothe itchy skin; and avoiding shaving the irritated skin altogether. A superficial case of folliculitis will usually clear by itself in a few days, but if there’s no improvement after two or three days, then you should go and see your GP.

I went to the doctors as I have sore red lumps and blisters around my anus and they have advised me that it is folliculitis and prescirbed me with Flucloxacillin to take and told me to bathe in salt water. Any other suggestions that could make this pain more bearable and help it to heal quicker?

I tryed some creams like E45 but it really stings and takes a while to clear the spots, but by that time the hair has grown back and when I shave again the spots come back. I find it really embaracing.... Please someone tell me what to do I'm only 13 and I'm too afraid to talk to other people about it :/

Hi, Ive had foliculitous for the past 5 years and have still not found a cure. I have tried nearly every antibioctic known to treat these infection and none of them seem to work. At the moment I am on a course of atibiotics called Klacid and am taking injections once a month. I already have lost a considerable amount of hair and dont want to move anymore as I am only 28. Please help.

i am only 14 and seem to have small redish brown spots around the outer area of my vagina. They itch a lot and sometimes bleed, also i occasionally have some deep intense pains that last a couple of seconds in the same area. I'm not too sure what either are but i'm too scared and embarrassed to ask anyone for help. Does anyone know what it is or could help??

I am twenty one and have lots of allergies and chronic asthma, so I wasn't surprised when earlier this year I began getting eczema in the typical places; under the elbow and behind my knees, in the creases. Creams prescribed clear it up mostly. However, I also started getting what I believed to be a bad case of shaving rash on my lower legs. I tried not shaving and it didn't work. So I began moisturising heavily which felt irritable on my skin. Seven months later and the itching is unbearable! I am covered in little scabs. In the summer, I hated showing my legs off. Sometimes I can't sleep and it affects my work in the day. I often make myself bleed from the itchy and that's when these little spots become scabby and sore. I have looked at lots of websites and pictures and believe I have folliculitis and will consult my GP but I hope there is a cure because is really is so annoying at its worst.

I have suffered from very painful spots on my breasts for years. A long time ago I was told that I have chronic folliculitis which is common in women in this particular area and very hard to treat. I have had numerous treatments which include cauterisation, long term medication to various topical lotions. I do not have this anywhere else on my body and am almost resolved that its just part of my make up. I have started taking lysine tablets from a herbal shop & this has reduced inflammation on the skin but I still get the spots & my skin is scarred. I would appreciate it if anyone had any other ideas?

Have the authors of the website got a bit confused? Hot tub folliculitis is a distinct type of folliculitis only caused from pseudomonus bacteria that can be found in hot tubs.
