Funnel Chest
This condition is variously known as cobbler’s chest, sunken chest or pectus excavatum. It is caused when several ribs grow abnormally, leaving the chest to cave in. Although some may see this as a purely cosmetic issue, it can cause pain in the chest and the back as well as impairing cardiac and respiratory function. Although it’s cause is not fully understood, there is evidence of a genetic connection. Treatment can include surgery through the Ravitch or Nuss techniques, as well as the insertion of a vacuum bell to correct the abnormality.

I'm an 18 year old girl that has this, its always bothered me, especially when it comes to boys or wearing a bikini on holiday or at the swimming pool. i'd like to get the Nuss procedure done but i have no idea how to go about it, or how long i would be in hospital for.
I am over 60 and had to live with a funnel chest all these years.
The operation very extensive and too costly for my parents too afford.
I dreaded going to the beach or pe because I felt uncomfortable and very selfconscious without a shirt on.
Adults and kids would stare and mention my "hole" in my chest. I am embarassed by my childhood pictures taken when I was shirtless.I was thin which didn't help me much. I have developed some health problems also.
hi im 13 yrs old and i suffer from so called 'funnel chest'. i used to go swimming with my primary school. everyone used 2 take the mick and i had a real tough time trying to cover it up. i wondered if it would fill out or look even worse as i get older and if i should do special exercises or see a doctor. it sometimes aches when i breath in but i dont have asthma or any breathing probloems. thanks.

Hi im 15 and my left side of my chest goes in this makes me self concious about taking my shirt off or when i go swimming and my ribs stick out is this linked to the concaved chest?
I am a 23 year old Male…. My funnel chest began to bother me at high school when i was unable to let anyone see my chest so i skipped swimming class and made sure i wore a jumper even in hot weather to hide the 'hole'! My condition got me down so much I researched the possible treatments for it and discovered the Nuss and Ravitch procedures. The NHS booked me in within months of me inquiring. I had the Nuss procedure first however the bar moved so i was given the ravitch procedure… The recovery was long but it was well worth it! My confidence improved greatly! Anyone with funnel chest It IS possible to get it sorted!

Hi, I never knew it had a name! I am 38 years old and have hated my chest all my life. I gave up sport at 20 (dressing rooms) and always felt uncomfortable on holiday at swimming pools etc. My wife says it doesn't bother her but I always felt awkward around girls when I was younger.
I am not sure but I wonder if it affects posture and lung capacity (?) I am not sure if at 38 I would be suitable for surgery but I will definitely find out.
I congratulate anyone who doesn’t let this bother them.
Im 34 years old & have funnel chest which bothers me deeply as I never take my top of in the summer & this has led me to refuse to go abroad on holiday or even go swimming I also find it hard to put on weight because of this , please help
Hi i'm 15 and i have this condition as well and i have often wondered if it affects my fitness during sport because i never seem to be as fit as i should be! i have seen my GP about it but he wasn't much help tbh. with further research i found possible opperations but they seem very painful and intrusive so i am just hoping that it will go with age? is there anyone who has experienced the "dent" lessening as they get older?
