Conditions

Halitosis

Bacteria from bad breath

There’s no shame in having halitosis (or bad breath, as it is more commonly known). In fact, 95% of us suffer from bad breath at some time in our lives, and one in four adults suffers from bad breath on a regular basis. A quick way to test the potency of your breath is to lick the inside of your wrist with the back of your tongue, let it dry for a few seconds, and then smell. If you subsequently find yourself recoiling in horror from a foul stench, then you should perhaps consider visiting your dental hygienist. Bad breath usually stems from poor oral hygiene (including neglecting the tongue area, which hosts the bacteria that cause bad breath). However, smoking and drinking too much alcohol can also contribute. Sprays, mints and chewing gum will only temporarily mask your bad breath, whereas improving your oral hygiene will ultimately pay-off.

If you’re suffering from any of the conditions featured on this site and want to apply for an onscreen consultation with one of the EB team then you can find more details here >>

Having read articles on this site and others, it appears halitosis can have a devastating affect on a person’s self esteem and subsequently their social lives. Some sufferer’s even go to the extent of treating themselves as social out-casts, thus creating a deep paranoia to their condition. As there can be several medical reasons leading to bad breath, a most common factor that is ignored is food processing in our diet. For those who are interested and those who are desperate enough, please bear with me. When I say food processing, I mean the way foods are cooked and prepared. Take the humble potato. You can eat it boiled or mashed and it is considered a healthy option. However, if you fry it, roast it and chip it, it is unhealthy. So, let us call the healthy option positive foods and the un-healthy option, negative foods. When a person has too many negative foods in their diet, the body reacts to this and over-heats. That is to say their blood becomes more viscose, their mouths become dry due to less production of saliva and they generally have constipation. The bacteria in the mouth are more abundant and this leads to halitosis amongst other symptoms. In the younger generation, they develop dreaded teenage spots. Some people have an ability to cope with negative foods whilst others don’t do so well. Maybe this is due to an evolutionary concept. However, it is now well known that foods that are fried, roasted and barbequed contain carcinogens that are considered to be detrimental to our health. It goes without saying that these foods also tend to be the most delicious and so we consume them without a thought and at our peril. Negative foods include foods that have been involved in roasting, frying, burned over a flame and processed. Positive foods are all those foods that have been boiled, steamed or eaten fresh as in salads, fresh fruit and veg. Try it for yourself. For one week, wake up to a delicious fried breakfast every morning, and the rest of the day eat nothing but fried, roast and baked foods. You will see at the end of the week’s trial: dry mouth and lips, etc. plus a few extra pounds! The following week, detox your system by drinking plenty of water, and eating only positive foods. It therefore goes without saying that a healthy diet containing positive foods along with a good oral regime should help reduce or eliminate halitosis. Please note that I have no experience in the medical field and my suggestions are just a theory.

Hi Jess I would suggest purchasing the breathcare kit as you get the measuring cap, tongue scraper etc as well as a 7 week supply. The mouthrinse works so you won't need to purchase any other products...you can use normal toothpaste :) Laura

Hi everyone. I suffered from halitosis all my life and totally sympathize with all of you. My halitosis was chronic but my dentist repeatedly told me my teeth were great and there were no problems (I'm 23 and only have one filling). After much online research, I realized the sad fact that some people simply are born with more bacteria on the back of the tongue and regular brushing, flossing and using various mouthwashes is a temporary cover-up and fails to deal with the VSC's on the back of the tongue. I used to use Retardex from Boots which is effective for a few hours. However, it is not a permanent solution for someone with a chronic condition (and hellishly expensive). I now use Profresh which has completely eliminated my problem (see www.profresh.com): read the independent laboratory report and the white paper research. This product is patented in the US which means that no other company contain the same ingredients that are 99.9% effective against halitosis. I won't babble on about how the product works etc as you can see for yourself on the website. Although my doctor and dentist are fantastic, unfortunately professionals are light years behind when it comes to halitosis. My doctor once told me to brush my tongue with listerine!!!! I couldn't believe it. Didn't he know I'd spent hundreds of pounds on products and had that morning spent no less an hour and 15 mins obsessively brushing, scraping, flossing, swilling etc etc etc. That's all a thing of the past now thank goodness. Thanks to this product I now have fresh breath 24 hours a day. I hope this info helps but I must stress that this product is only effective for those who have chronic halitosis which is not attributable to sinus problems, post-nasal drip etc. This will only work for those where halitosis originates from the mouth, despite having no significant dental problems. Unfortunately, some of us are just born producing more bacteria than others. In terms of cost, I used to spend £30-£40 a week on Retardex products (hard to believe I know). A bottle of mouth was around £7 ish but I used to go through it very quickly. With Profresh I buy it in bulk. I get 13 bottles each lasting 17 days twice a year. I usually pay around £120 but Profresh is now shipped from London instead of the States which will eliminate pesky shipping charges the next time I order. So I would say you can expect to pay £200 a year for your supplies (to me its like liquid gold so price is irrelevant). I would love to hear from someone that they had cured their problem because of this post so please report back with any success stories. Your probably skeptical (like I was) but I guarantee that if you have the same type of halitosis like me..it will work. Good luck :) Laura.

Hi, I've had a horrible taste in my mouth and a horrible smell since I was about 10 (I'm now 22). My dentist said my teeth and gums are fine and it does seem like the taste is coming from my throat. I do suffer with tonsil stones and I am waiting for a date to have a tonsillectomy however in the past when I have removed the stones they don't seem to have any smell at all so I'm worried the tonsillectomy won't help. I also have small red bumps down the back of my throat, does anyone know what these are? I feel so fed up and depressed, constantly worried about talking to people and I go through countless packets of mints and chewing gum...any advice would be great. Thanks

i have suffered from bad breath since i was bout 4 years of age. all my life iv been thobbed off by doctors by them having the easy way out of saying i need to brush my teeth properly. i did brush properly and i have never had any problems at all with my teeth. i used to go through a pack of mints a day and carry a toothbrush around with me incase i was going to eat something. after 3 years of waiting for an operation the doctors finally took my tonsils out as they said the tonsil stones growing at the back of my throat was the reason of my bad breath. my operation was 5 months ago and my breath hasnt changed and im still going through a pack of mints a day. i dont know what else to do now, i dont know what it can be.

I've suffered from bad breath since having an ileostomy 3 years ago. Didn't have this problem before. Are there any other ileostomists out there with this problem? Did you find a solution?
