Genital Herpes

Herpes sores on a penis (Photo courtesy of the CDC)

Genital herpes is an infection of the genitals caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and is the most common ulcerative sexually transmitted disease in the UK. There are two subtypes of the herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 (which causes facial herpes, including cold sores on the lips, but has increasingly been implicated in cases of genital herpes), and HSV-2 (which almost exclusively causes herpes on the genitals). Around 80% of people with genital herpes don’t even know they have it, as there are often no symptoms. However, even without symptoms, it’s possible to pass genital herpes on to a sexual partner because the virus may sometimes be present in your genital area. And once you get the herpes virus, it’s with you for life, which means you will have recurrent infections. Over-the-counter treatments for cold sores will not treat genital herpes, so smearing your genitals with Zovirax is an ineffective alternative to visiting your local GP or GUM clinic.

how do i know if i got this ???

does herpes always hurt?

I was diagnosed in 2005 with HSV2 .I thought I just had some sort of rash down below .My ex was cheating on me with a prostitute & was having unprotected sex with her & Myself .I am now 56 & can totally relate to the lady above .It seems impossible to think of having a partner ever again ,because as soon as I have sex I get an outbreak which usually starts with a migraine 3 days previously & the sore (always in same place ) can last for almost 3 weeks .I take natural remedies but just think this is it ,just stick to havung friends .

Im 21 ,I left my girlfriend of a year out of selfishness, she loved me so much but i was too blind to see it and thought i could do better so i started goin out with my mates again and started sleeping about i slept with 5 girls in 3 months but with 2 of them i didn't use a condom. I slept with 1 of them 1 weekend and then the other about 6 times got to know her well but never got serious and didn't use a condom after that episode i started to think about my ex and i felt really bad, i wanted her back but she sed she didn't want to get hurt again i became depressed and about 2 mths after trying to get her back i moved away back to my dad's and two days after i moved back in i started to get spots they were skin colour but had water like fluid in them about 8 of them in total but not simultaneously 1 would go and another would appear. They wre present for just over a week then faded away and they weren't painful at all even though i was really worried. It's been about 5 months since then i spoke to the girl i got to know and she says she has nothing wrong she is now with a good friend of mine who also says hes had no problems and i haven't had a reoccurence of any kind but i worry that it could be herpes and it may come back and when i think about it i itch downstairs a bit but when i not thinking about don't seem to itch as much. I went to the gum clinic and they said they can't diagnose it without an outbreak so i researched it and because my simtoms are similar to herpes thats what it points to although i'm yet to exprienced the legendary pain that herpes brings. I've spoken about std's with friends but have never told them of my worries and my friends told me once he had some blister like spots once not painful and not ulcerated and the doctor told him it was heat rash and i only hope that i had heat rash too. I don't really know what to do but wait for something to happen and it has lowered my sex drive dramatically, i often think its calmer punishing me for breaking my ex girlfriend's heart!

about 9months ago i caught herpes, it was very painfull and i found it hard to walk, painfull when wearing underwear and when i went to wee i had to pour warm water down my vagina to stop the pain. it is very depressing i try an move on with my life but herpes always comes back to mind and makes me upset. my partner caught the virus from me as i did not know i had it untill he got symptoms. i am now 5months and 2 weeks pregnant and that has taken my partners mind off the virus but i am extremly scared about giviing birth as i want a natural birth but dont want to chance passin it to my unborn child! help!! i find if i have a hot bath an pour hot salt water on my vagina it gets better in a few days. i want to stop thinking about the virus as much and concentrate on my baby, im 19 years old and depressed an i no it is not good for my unborn baby. any information would be nice.

I have "IT"
Im 19.I was told i have genital herpes on saturday.so basically it hasnt even been a week.the doctor first told me 2 weeks ago i had severe thrush.so i went a week with a really bad flu, really sore lumps ,and i really couldnt go to the bathroom cause of the pain…im sure if you have it you know the rest.when i finally went to a diffrent doctor she told me that i had herpes.
i really cant describe the feeling i felt at that moment.i just felt dirty.my boyfriend has it too.he only has the lumps no other symtoms.he blames me.we have both been faithful,i have just had more sexual partners then him.i tried to be positive and get perspective…he just couldnt.he has not stopped crying and thinks its the end of the world.he is treating it like he has AIDS.he completely forgot that i have it too.we broke up yesterday.my mum told my dad i had genital herpes and he hasnt spoken to me since.did you ever feel when someone looks at you all they see is the sti?.its like they see me as a different person.

i just want to ask the people who have " it" too…
did you ever think why me? why couldnt i just get an sti that is completely cureable!? does it get easier or is it always there at the back of your mind ringing in your ear?
do the outbreaks happen much? do they effect your everyday life?
thanks :)

The more you learn about this virus, the less you are concerned.

It is common to think you are unworthy because you have contracted this virus, but the fact is that almost all people will have either type 1 or type 2 HSV by old age – with or without symptoms.

It can be caught in a variety of places on the body, the mouth and genitals being the most common places. How many people suffer from coldsores? A lot of people. A lot of people that don't, possibly carry the virus anyway but never show symptoms.

It's believed 80% of people carry one or both, and so the antibodies are there, and when you have one type, you have partial protection from another.

It's believed that 1 in 4 people have genital herpes, but only 1 in 4 of those know, so it's more a case of how unlucky you are with symptoms recurring. In a lot of cases people will catch it once, and never have any symptoms after this.

It is nothing to feel ashamed of and people need to realise that by old age this will be caught in one place or another and once it is caught, you cannot recatch it, so if a partner has had coldsores, and you have HSV 1 on the genitals, they cannot catch it again anywhere else on the body.

This should clear up a lot of myth and fear and anxiety around this subject! It will never make anyone less of a person.

Would totally recommend this website it helped me when I was diagnosed and thought my life had ended, www.hva.org.uk , membership is fabulous and you can get all info you need from technical to emmotional, it gave me good advise on how to tell future partners. They hold regular local meetings so you can make friends and talk to others who understand, run workshops and have talk lines where you can chat to someone who also has the virus. Just what you need to put all in perspective and realise that you just have a cold sore it just so happens to be downstairs, your body deals with it and heals itself after an outbreak and it causes no other health problems like infertility, it just might be a bit uncomfortable for a few days (first few outbreaks can be very painful but gets much much better with time).

have like little bumps when i apply pressure to them they ozzes out white stuff like a spot. and twice they have become large and hard to pop does this mean i have anything.

I was first told by a doctor that i had herpes when i was young and didnt understand what it was, i contracted it through swimming in the same pool as someone with it which sucks. I am now 17 and have minor outbreaks on my foreskin and on my testicles which is quite depressing as it leaves me thinking that no girl would go anywhere near me when they see the outbeak. Having said that i have had some sexuall partners but i have always made sure that i have used a condom, is there any chance that i could have passed it on even when using a condom? is there any way to also reduce the appearence of the Lesions on my penis? can someone help me please?
