Conditions

Hirsutism

Excessive hair

In ancient Greece, the young brides of Argos would fix false beards to their chins on their wedding night, so as to be in no way inferior to the men with whom they shared a bed. However, when the fun and games of the consummation were over, these Argive women knew they could remove the beard and embrace femininity again. But for modern women suffering from hirsutism – when females grow too much body or facial hair in a pattern seen normally occurring only in men – facial hair can be embarrassing and a cause of great distress. Furthermore, removing such facial and bodily hair requires treatment, such as physically removing the hairs; taking a course of anti-androgen drugs; or having courses of electrolysis or laser treatment. Excessive hairiness in women can be caused by abnormally high androgen levels (male hormones), which is sometimes due to an underlying medical condition, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

I am 39. I stopped taking femulen about 4 years ago and within a few years I started to notice the hairs on my cheeks and neck growing longer. I have started developing black hairs on my chin. I have had checks for male hormone levels and all ok. So far I have handled it as the long hairs have been fine in colour and the odd black hairs I have plucked. Eventually it appears they stop coming back. However, the number of hairs is getting more and the fair long hairs are starting to change colour. I am single after 20 years and frankly this scares the life out of me. I dont want to shave or use cream as I know this will make it worse. I can't afford the ongoing cost of laser and anyway would also be scared of how I will deal with the hair in between treatments. and would it work. I have considered bleaching. I just dont know what to do and so scared its just going to get worse. I work in male environment which probably doesnt help either and I cant get into a relationship for fear of what they will think when they notice. I feel I want to get rid of it all but I know it will grow back. Is it likely to get worse. Will it settle. Is it worth trying the cream vanique(?)Should I bleach. Why cant the NHS help with free treatment when this cause sooo much anguish. I am so frightened that one day I wont be able to go out my front door. Is there any hope

im 17 years old and have had a problem with to much hair growing on my neck and chin, my upper lip, a very small amount on my chest, just below my belly button and also more than usual in more private areas which i have had for about 3 years i have tried waxing shaving and plucking to get rid of the hairs but when i do any of those, the hairs just grow back darker and quicker. this has made my life hell and i really need your help on how to find a permanent or more effective means of treatment. i heard that pcos can sometimes prevent you from having children is this true? and is there more than one diagnoses that this could be other than polycistic ovaries? please help me. it is starting the bring me down a lot and i cannot bear this problem any longer.

PLEASE HELP

hi im a 33 year old woman and since the birth of my son have i have gradually noticed an increase in the amount of facial hair on my upper lip and on my chin.I am a brunette so this is very noticeable. This problem has a massive affect on my self esteem and confidence, even now when talking to others in daylight I hide my upper lip with my hand.its very embarrassing and makes me feel unfeminine.

Ive used facial bleach in the past but the hairs are getting thicker now and are harder to bleach.Last year i bought myself a laser system which lasers one hair at a time.As you can imagine this is very tedious and am not sure if it will make the hair growth worse or not??

please can you send me any advice on this and how to permanently remove these hairs on my chin and upper lip without it costing me a massive amount of money.

i am a single parent and finances are very tight.
thank you x

I Have Quite A Lot Of Hair On My Whole Body. I Have Always Had Promblems With It, II Dont Wear Girly Cloths As Much Because I Dont Want No-one To See. I Am Now 16 And Feel Like I Cant Wear What I Like Because Of This. What Can I Do Bout It??..

Today I have had enough with it all. I must be a man becuase I am starting to look like one? I feel so ugly I have stubble on my chin, with more hair on my face/chest/stomach/back & bum. I am so upset with all of this when will it end? Laser treatment has not worked – what else can help ...please?

Hi
Please can you tell me if there is a connection between excessive hair growth and pollops?

I have had a number of blood tests done and I do not have a hormone problem which has left me more confused than ever.

Can you please give me advice?

I want to know what treatment are avaialble for Hirsutism. I have this condition on the my legs and surrounding area. When i get waxed boyles emerge as the hair starts to regrow. Creams have the same effect as does shaving.I have been refered to the plastic surgery department for lazer treatment only to be told that because my effected area is not visible to the naked eye then I would have to go private. I have suffered from this since the age of 19 and now at 45 I,ve had enough. Help!! There must be some other option available to help people in this situation.

Hi,

Me too. I am Mediterraneans so hairiness is inevitable BUT my neck has really bad growth at the moment I pluck the hairs out which sometimes causes bad spots and scarring which is noticeable I have to wear foundation and a lot of it to feel normal but I know its still there… Tried electrolysis and frankly it really did not help plus had a bad experience which also scarred?

I need advice please

Thanks x
