Conditions

Ichthyosis

Ichthymosis

Ichthyosis is a term used to describe continual scaling of the skin. In fact, the name of this condition is derived from the ancient Greek word “ichthys”, which means fish, although not all sufferers have fish-like scales. There are many types of this rare condition, which can be inherited (genetic or congenital) or develop later in life. However, Ichthyosis vulgaris is the commonest form of inherited Ichthyosis, which affects one in every 250 people. This is usually quite mild and develops in early childhood with fine, light grey scales and roughness on the arms and legs. It is sometimes associated with atopic or childhood allergic eczema, which may cause an increased wrinkling of the palms and soles. Regular application of moisturisers or emollients can alleviate the condition, which may improve in adulthood (although the condition can still be passed down to a sufferers children). Some of the rarer and more severe forms of the condition, such as Harlequin Ichthyosis, can require intensive medical and nursing care.

For the first time I have had some recognition to what the skin problem I have. I have had icthyosis for all my life. I am now nearly 34 and would still love a better control or improvements on the condition I have. Is there anything that can be done

i have the same thing with my legs and the only thing that works for me is Calmurid put it on in morning and night,it will take a long time to see any change.the cost over in Ireland is 17euros, last about 10 days for me. I have tryed E45 i find it did not work for me,its nice to no that the doctors can help i have gone for years not knowing what it was that i had so thanks to all of you catherine

Hi, I have suffered from ichthyosis for 5 years. I was applying "Eucerin" and wrapping my legs in the morning and in the evening, but the cream doesn't work for me.I have finished 1 tube. Before creamed I washed my legs with soap and water.Mabe I miss somethink.

my farther has had this condition since birth , the skin scales up really thick on his feet and up his legs , it covers his whole body , he finds the sun can help has his arms seem to clear up when we have plenty of sunshine , he isnt one to go to a sunbed and the risks with that are not worth it . he has tried everything , even udder cream for cows which funny enough seemed to do a alot better than e45 etc , i saw the programme and phoned that clinic but they didnt seem intrested to be honest , any ideas as it would be great for him to get rid of it , never know mabe i would see him in some shorts , that would be a first and he is now 67 !

hi i also have this complaint, my mother had it as well and i have given it to my son, can i buy these creams over the counter at a chemist or would i have to see a doctor.

Hi, ok, i have mixed eucerin with calmurid and wrapped my legs three times now (about once every 3-4 days) and the improvement is astonishing. my skin also remains miraculously moisturised without any additional creaming in between wraps. the brown patches are fading, I soaked in plain water for 15 minutes on my fourth day and the dead skin was just rubbed off…..i really hope this helps, best wishes

what procedure would i go through to have a posible outcome like the one you broadcasted? how long does it takee to clear?

does anyone know how to use the creams culmurid and cetraben i have been using the culmurid under cling film for a few hours then washing it off and applying the cetraben my legs have come out in more scales than ever before having just watched the programme again the lady said she mixed two of three creams can someone please give us these answers as to how to use these creams getting desparate now
