Nail Problems

Fungal infection in the toenail

Perfectly manicured nails are every woman’s dream. Well, except for those who are besieged by all manner of toe and fingernail complaints. And men, you’re at risk too! These problems range from fungal nail infections to white spots, or an ingrown toenail. Either antibiotics or the gentle removal of the offending nail spike by a podiatrist will usually treat an ingrown toenail. Infected nails on the other hand (no pun intended), can be white, yellow, green or black and may look distorted, thicken or crumble. As they won’t go away on their own, it may be better to talk to your GP who will pin point the exact cause and offer suitable treatment. To avoid such problems all together, you should give your feet plenty of air, because warmth and sweat only encourage fungi growth. Another condition, Koilonychia or ‘spoon–shaped’ nails usually indicates an iron deficiency. So women everywhere, take note: if you just paint them, you’ll only be painting over the cracks!

It doesn't seem to want to go away and is really painful please help.

I stubbed my big toe a few weeks ago, at first it bled and it has been an orangy-yellow colour underneath since, various people have stood on my feet since I stubbed it. The cuticle is really sore, and in the night I have to wear socks because clear puss comes out of the sides of my toe :/ I'm too embarrassed to see a doctor about it and I hate feet, what can I do?

Hey – I suffered from an ingrowing toe nail in my teens.

A little tip! – try putting a little bit of cotton wool (I just pull it off of a cotton bud) and run it under your nail. This is easier to do when you have had a bath and your toes are soft.

That way as the nail grows it kind of grows upwards and not down in towards the skin around the nail.

It works a treat – honest!!

Since 2004 I have had ingrowing toenails on both my big toes. I had surgery once to rempve the offending slivers of Nail but nothing worked. So I thought i'd sort them out myself seeing as I'm the one who really knows where the pain is. I cut down the sides of both nails and pulled out the ingrowing pieces. May have hurt at the time but the relief is unreal. Now I just keep them filed down wit a special ingrown file. I'm so happy I can wear open toe shoes again!
Make sure all your tools are sterilised though.
