Leg Ulcer
A leg ulcer definitely sounds like something we could all happily live without. And thankfully, for people under the age of 45, they are very rare. However, if you’ve made it past the grand old age of 80, the figures show that 1 in every 50 are affected by venous leg ulcers, and they are more common in people who are obese or immobile. Leg ulcers look like craters in the skin, varying in shape, colour and size. Your leg may also be painful, itchy and swollen. In many cases they are due to poor circulation in the arteries, if the values in your veins stop working or as a result of diabetes. Ulcers need to be kept clean to avoid infection whilst arterial ulcers may benefit from surgery. If the leg ulcer is caused by an underlying disease it’s important to have this treated as well.

I am 29 year old male and have suffered with leg ulcers since i was 24. I have also been tested for diabetes but have received a normal result. It's been 5yrs since i had my last ulcer and this time the pain is awful. It first appeared in September 2008 and have still got leg in compression only now it seems to be improving but still painful. I have had stripping of the veins in both legs and valves replaced. Hoping when healed compression stocking will stave or stop ulcer from re-occurring. Have lost my job in result of all the time i have taken off. But i still drive although sometimes it can be quite uncomfortable

I am 34 yrs old and have had this leg ulcer for 3 yrs. I think it all started whenI had a blood clot in my leg, the wound will not heal and I get infections from time to time. This time has been very bad as I lost all feeling in my foot and was not able to move it. I have been prescribed various antibiotics but nothing seems to be working. I just want this to be sorted so that I can get on with my life!
I am a 54 year old Diabetic male and have had a leg ulcer for 34 years! I constantly get infections in it and have had MRSA twice in the last 8 years.
I have to be carefull when wearing safety boots for work as they can rub the ulcer and make it worse.
I can't go swimming with the family and when I wear shorts on holiday everyone always stares straight at the Inadine dressing on my leg because it looks as though the ulcer is leaking through when in actual fact it is the iodine leaking. When I shower I have to cover it up with a plastic bag so it doesn't get wet. The ulcer is dry at the moment but I have a large hole that will not close up.
I can't do anything without the fear of bashing my leg and making it worse. I watch my diet very carefully, am slim, have never smoked and drink in moderation. I eat manuka honey on my porridge every morning.
Can someone please do something to help me?

I do not have an ulcer but I wasn't sure where to post this. I have had problems with my lower legs since childhood. Now in my late thirties (female), my legs are extremely thin and look emaciated. Despite blood tests and referals to different docs, no one knows why. I am normal weight for my height but carry all my weight around my middle. From about 9 years old, my legs have not changed in size, despite eating a healthy diet and regular exercise, including weight training. The lower part of my legs measure 6.5 inches which looks completely out of proportion and abnormal on my 5'8" frame. Apart from the depression I've suffered for most of my life about it – I also worry that my legs will become too weak to support me as I get older. Is there any illness or disease that may be causing this? PLEASE help, my doctor has no answers and I don't know where else to turn. I have never seen or heard of anyone with this problem and feel like a freak.
I am 37 & developed a leg ulcer after being bitten (by an insect) last year. I have been in compression bandages for the last 15 weeks. 3 weeks ago the bandages came off as the would seemed to have healed over but within a couple of hours the skin broke down again & a blood blister formed & then burst. My specialist wants me to go for a duplex scan to see if I have a leaky vein. What would the treatment be if a leak was found.
Thank you
