Conditions
Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissue – most often in the arms and the legs, though it can also affect the rest of the body. It is caused by disruption to the lymphatic system, a network of ducts that help fight infections in the body and drains away excess fluid. It can be inherited, but can also be brought on by treatments for cancer, radiotherapy, inflammation and certain cardiovascular diseases. Treatment is complicated, and can involve manually draining the affected area by means of massage or bandaging, but recently there has been a breakthrough in surgical treatments for the condition, utilising liposuction to remove excess fat and reduce the swelling. Though this treatment is still unproven in the long-term, it has been cleared for NHS use.

I had hysterectomy about 10 yrs ago. My leg began to swell exemerely bad. my whole legs double in size, i now have lymphoedema and have to wear compress tights. which keeps the swelling under control. .the whole experience is very painful. every time i visit the lymphoedema clinic or GP they tell me i have to loss weight. is there any cure for this condition, i would really like to start wearing dresses or skirts one day.
I had a total hysterectomy ten years ago and wore HRT patches the whole time.I have frequently asked my doctor about the fluid in my legs and have been told that long term medication would affect my kidneys. Legs are fine on a morning but swell up throughout the day and feel hard at times.I sat on a bus for 11 hours on holiday and panicked when my legs ballooned and i had to immediately lie down and elevate my legs by lifting them as high as possible. I need answers to my problem as it affects my confidence and what i am able to wear.I have also found that when i squat down i am now unable to get up as easily and have to use my hands or the nearest chair to help me....is this due to fluid retention too?

For approximately the last year I have noticed that after a long day at work my legs swell round my ankle area up to where your calf would start. When I wake up in the morning they are fine but during the day they swell. I have been on the pill for at least 10 years could this be to do with it, also my brother suffers badly with varicose veins which I think he has picked up in the family, his legs have no definision from the knee down. Could it be the start of the same condition or could it be pill related?

I have noticed a slight swelling on my left thigh just above my knee, it has been there nearly two weeks and is hardly noticeable except to me. It is soft and does not hurt. I have never had this before and I have'nt injured this leg, just worried because I have been looking on the internet for advice and it keeps saying about types of sarcoma.
I have lymphoedema on my left leg due to cellulitis in 2009. Although the swelling has gone down considerably, it is still very swollen at at times i feel a lot of pain and pressure. I am waiting to be referred to the lymphoedema clinic but in the meantime massage my leg and find it relieves the pain and swelling just a little. Just wondering if I can have my leg drained of the excess fluid and also I have discovered I am pregnant so I am assuming it will only get worse with the pregnancy. Please help as this is really getting me down.
massage really works; get your partner to do it for you every day and keep moving your legs. Also drink more water.
Lymphatic Drainage works, use a good massage practitioner, especially one who specialises in this field.
