Conditions
Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissue – most often in the arms and the legs, though it can also affect the rest of the body. It is caused by disruption to the lymphatic system, a network of ducts that help fight infections in the body and drains away excess fluid. It can be inherited, but can also be brought on by treatments for cancer, radiotherapy, inflammation and certain cardiovascular diseases. Treatment is complicated, and can involve manually draining the affected area by means of massage or bandaging, but recently there has been a breakthrough in surgical treatments for the condition, utilising liposuction to remove excess fat and reduce the swelling. Though this treatment is still unproven in the long-term, it has been cleared for NHS use.

Hi i was diagnosed with Lipodema about 6 montha ago a similar condition to lymphadema except it occurs in both limbs, I also have it in my stomach. Just thought i would share my experience. I get a treatment called Manual Lymph Drainage on my legs, arms and stomach 4 times a week. At the end of my sessions i wear bandages on one limb for 24 hours and then go back for more treatment. Within the 24hrs the fluid reduces dramatically. I also will be measured for compression garmets which i will have to wear all the time. These aparantly reduce the fluid even more. I am only being treated for 4 weeks now so far and i have seen huge improvement on both my legs, stomach and arms. This treatment is apparently used for lymphadema aswell and does give results.
i have a swollen stomach i have had it for about 4years . last year i went to my gp who sent me for a ultrasound which came back clear . i am 41 years of age and i weight 14 stone . all of my life i weighed 7stone what do u think is wrong . when i went to the hospital the doctor asked if i have had a hystertomy and i said no but forgot to ask him why he asked that question thankyou.
My 17 month old son has this condition. He had it from birth but then it went away. When he was 6 months it came back again. He suffers from no pain with this and it does not hinder him in any way. We had numerous hospital visits before they diagnosed him. His foot and calf were very swollen. His skin didnt change,it didnt turn blue or red like some comments have reported. Our last visit to the hospital my son was fitted with an elasticated bandage which puts pressure on the swollen areas. My son has to ware this all the time, but taken off at bedtime. Swimming also helps this condition and on our next visit to the hospital they are going to show us a massaging technique. My son can where normal shoes or trainers. The pressure from these will help the swelling of the foot. It has been 7 months since my soon first wore the bandage and the swelling has gone down loads. Our next appointment is april. Hopefully we can move on to the next stage of treatment then.
my mum possiblie has this condition but in her arm but her arm has gone really hairy like a monkey does any one else have this problem
I have had swollen calves for about 5 years now. I am overweight but the problem came on very quickly after a motorcycle accident that damaged my knees. I was diagnosed and cured of Lyme Disease a couple of years after that and since then, my lower legs have swollen to twice their previous diameter. My doctor advised against liposuction, suggesting instead I go on a Xenical diet but I know it's not my weight causing this. I use elastic knee supports to reduce the swelling for a day or so but it comes back. I really want something done so that I can wear shorts, skirts, boots and swmming costumes again!
I believe myself to have lymphoedema and my doctor is saying I am making it up and will not refer me as I am too young and there is no swelling. The swelling IS there and only in my left foot. This has been so bad I have had to go to my local A&E dept as I lost all blood in my toes. Again, they just asked if I was pregnant (not at all, not even overweight) and told that as it is only one foot there was no point to investigate any treatment. I pushed and pushed and reluctantly they sent me for an ultrasound of my leg to the groin, they found no clots and have since ignored me and said I was fine. It has not been almost 10 years and I am now 27, I cannot wear sandals in the summer and can hardly bend the toes. I am at my wits end and get very depressed about it, would like some advice please please please.
I think I have this condition, I have had permanently swollen ankles and the fleshabove my ankles looks misshapen since the onset of puberty. Luckily there is no pain though, unlike others who have posted here. I first asked my GP about it at 13, he told me I was making it up and just wanted him to prescribe diuretics so I could lose weight! He asked me my waist size, which was 24" and he said "and the rest" and fobbed me off with diuretic pills. I took one and got an excruciating headache and felt really thirsty, so I flushed the rest of the pills down the loo. (My recollection is detailed as I was so shocked by his attitude and to be called a liar by someone I had previously trusted! He also said I would probably get varicose veins by the time I was 30, like my mother (which was untrue, btw). The next time I dared raise the subject was at 37 - I was (am) sick of having to hide my legs under trousers and hunt around for shoes that don't make it worse - it really dents one's self confidence. That time, the doctor initially stared at me, silently, until I told him I wanted advice and if he was worried about his budget then I would go private if necessary. He then said it couldn't worry me that much as I'd only just mentioned it! I asked if he thought some kind of liposuction treatment might help or whether the condition would return my ankles to the same state afterwards. He just said he didn't know. End of conversation. So, if there is something that can be done, please someone let us all know about it!
Hi, I am 61year old male, Ihad a heart bypass 18months ago and have back and thigh muscle problems. I also get very itchy (mainly at night) white spots or raised skin mainly below the knee but some also on the thighs. I have had these for a few years. The doctor said it was from sun damage, but could it be anything else? I am a pale skinned person and have never been one for sunbathing. Thank you.
