Conditions

Nail Psoriasis

Nail psoriasis

This condition affects your nails, causing them to become pitted and discoloured. They can also grow in strange ways, leaving big gaps betwen the nail and the nail bed, and sometimes becoming thick, loose and separate. In the severest of cases, the nails can crumble away entirely. Most people who suffer from nail psoriasis also suffer from skin psoriasis, and the causes of both are similar, and have a genetic link. There are not currently any cures fro nail psoriasis, but there are treatments that can be used to mitigate against any additional symptoms, such as fungal infections of the nail. Gently trimming back the nail can reduce the appearance of unsightly growths, as will ensuring the nail doesn’t suffer any unneccesary damage.

For youre nail problems! keep them short, filed and ask for Dovobet from your doctor but use it as prescribed and for as long as it takes to get rid of the problem and use Double-Base often, I was given this from a consultant and it worked a treat

My 9 year old son has been suffering for about 4 months. My doctors has refured him on to podiatrist. There was a mess up with the appointments and a new one was made. Mean while my son has now been waiting for months and his problem is spreading under his big toe nail. His had antibiotics with no resault except for a small bit of pain relief. He has a growth under his nail causing it to push up the nail. The grownth has circulation and hard skin over it. I've been using emmoliant to remove the dead skin. The growth is larger and the nail is coming away from the skin bed where the growth is. The skin around the top of the nail is coming away from the nail slowly too, the nail is going whiter and becoming out of shape due to the pressure of the growth pushing it up. What can i do to help him? what do you think this could be? Im cleaning, Trimming, Filling, using emmolient ever night, soaking his foot. Its made no difference and still worsening. He hates me trying to care for it as it hurts so much. Shoes are gunna be a problem soon. Please help.

I've had Psoriasis for nearly 19 years and I have tried so many treatments that haven't worked on me like dovobet, elecon, Diprosalic, polytar etc. I tried PUVA light treatment which did wonders for my skin! It cleared my skin completely (and got a free suntan... bonus!) If I wasn't so sensitive to heat (I pass out if I get too warm) I would of continued the treatment. Now I'm currently on Ciclosporin, which is normally used for transplant patients but has been shown to improve skin. The results are unbelieveable!! My body is clear of psoriasis and it has improved a lot on my scalp and nails. When getting nails done just ask for a coloured manicure, clear ones will still show up your psoriasis.

Amy, Where do you purchase Boots - I can't go around with fingernails that look so horrible. I will try anything.

my nail has been like this for a very long time and all the doctors say they cannot do anything about it! it is sooo frustrating when I see other people talking about nail manicures and treatments and I can't even do anything with my nails. They said that it wasn't fungal, so there was nothing they could do. I don't want to be stuck with this forever! And the worst thing is, the nail is on my wedding ring finger, which is definately the worst place you could have the nail on! I just want some advice on what I can do, but everywhere I go no one can help me and all I want, all i need is some advice........

ask for some Dovobet cream also take some Vit D tablets Good Luck

Ask your gp to refer you to a skin specialist who will take scrapings from the nail to determine if it is psoriasis - I have suffered from this - both finger and toenails for around 8 years - unfortunately if it is nail psoriasis there is little that can be done.

how do i get rid of this! gosh! so annoying! i went to the doctors threee times and they give me crabbie tablets which dont do nothing at all! i cover it up with nail polish because im so embrassed by it any suggestions how to rid of it! thank you. i've had this for 2 yrs and i gave samples at the hospital lab, but nothing came back, it was all clear! so i dont clearly understand! grr

i used to be the same. My doctor didn't do anything and sent me home thinking i was being silly. when I went to florida my stepdad pulled my nail as a joke but he didn't know about my condition. I had to sit on the plane with my index finger pressing my ring finger nail back so It didn't coome off. What tablets did you get as i neededd some tablets foor that. :)

Not sure if I have this condition or not. For as long as I can remember, even as a child, my pinky toenails dont grow normal at all. They grow in a lump. They dont grow out over the end of my toe, but they grow in a mound, towards the sky. They dont hurt, but are very difficult to cut since i have to cut through the entire mound of nail. I can cut them down deep, it only pinches a little when i do that, but the pain goes away immediately when im done clipping them. I dont know what the condition is, my mother had the same thing, and one of my brothers has it too. The nail is a bit darker then the rest of my nails. Anyone have any idea on that?

are you black or mixed race? my husband is, and apparently its really common with them for some reason...their little toenails just grow like that. its not fungal or anything.

no, im not mixed, im german (mostly) french, american indian, english, heinz 57 all american mutt. my father and my brothers father are different, both are white, my mother was pure german

I've had psoriasis since i was 16, non stop and am now 28. it started with two patches on my back then appeared along my hair line on my forehead, nose, ears, chest, legs, elbows etc. Topical steriods never worked, tar never worked so i tried chinese herbal remedies. If anything the done less than the t/steriods. I took it upon my self to have a sunbed session,i started on 3 mins twice a week for six weeks. Also using Double Base (WATER BASED MOISTURISER)after every session and morning and night (wouldnt recommened using on face it caused me irritation). i couldnt of been more happier. my face cleared up and i could breath again. i didnt care what was on my body i just wanted my confidence back. i have permanant psoriasis on my elbows which have never dissapeared fully and i still suffer with it on my back so i cant enjoy my summers like most but i assure u the sun can do wonders for your skin with a safe spf of course. For the past 8 years i have suffered badley with psoriasis under my nails. There is not one that it has'nt got too. My toe nails are the worst affected. I have trimmed them back, ive filled them, ive kept them as dry as can be and i promise you they get no better. Aat a stage it dissapeard from keepin the nails short and then when i was movin a table at work the table dropped and took my toe nail off the nail bed. since then ive never been able to get rid of it. 8 years on i cant wear open toed shoe's even if i painted my nails. i cant even look at them anymore.i'm really surprised that there is yet no permanent cure for such a simple skin problem. Diprosalic scalp application as mentioned before by another and i agree, its great stuff on the scalp and can keep it away for a long time, untill stress or over tierdness kicks in! i use it also on any new flare ups i see n they vanish in 24 hrs. I also wear fake nails that i put on myself to hide the uplifted nails by cuttin my nail as short as i can so the fake nails dont look odd. avoid clear nails obv you will see the psoriasis, simply paint them with whatever colour you choose. Hope some of my idea's help, theyve sure helped me :)

Thankyou :)

I have had psoriasis for about 8years - some on my skin but that clears quite well with the sun. My nails are bad with it and I have lost all of my finger nails on two occasions and they have just started to crumble and rot again. My two big toe nails are affected also - the worse thing is that there is a green pus like substance which comes from under the nails - mostly on my toe nails - I had both my big toe nails removed to try and stop this but it was unsuccessful - I had them redone about 5 weeks ago again - but already the 'pus' like substance is showing again. some of this comes from under the finger nails as well, my fingers around the base of my nail is constantly inflamed and when they are really painful I know there is a build up of this stuff and I have to release it. I have tried various medications including methotrexate but nothing has worked. I dont know anyone else with this pus stuff from their nails - anyone else have this problem or any ideas??

Doublebase is great, I use it for my infected ecezma x:)

I have had psoriasis for 49 years, It started when I took my 11 plus and after various treatments and stays in hospital for tar baths and differant creams, had a few good years free from it,but the only thing that really helped was puva treatment and after about three weeks would completly vanish. The only thing is you can only have a certain amount. i use diprosalic scalp application which I find helps me tremendosly. As for toenails I had a fish spar and it is like magic. I have had only one so far but the improvement is very noticable

I also suffered with psoriasis. I was 16 yrs old when it started in my scalp, thick scales and my hair started coming out. I was prescribed some tar treatment but it was a nightmare trying to get out of my hair. I carried on using this treatment from the hospital for a few years until I was told about alphosyl lotion. This lotion was massaged into the scalp and I slept with it on my scalp (wearing a bath cap) and washed it off each morning. I carried on using alphosyl lotion every day until it got under control and then just used once a week for a couple of years and then every month until completely ok. I have never suffered with psoriasis on my body thank goodness. This was many years ago as I am now 60 yrs old but have now got the problem of fingernails leaving nail bed. Been to the hospital but because of previously having psoriasis they were inclined to say it was the cause of this problem. Have been given some ointment to put onto nails although doesn't seem to make any difference.

I'm a hairdressing apprentice and I have already been diagnosed with severe contact dermatitis on both my hands and has now spread to my feet. Over the past few months I have had regular appointments with various doctors many telling me that it's not serious and that there wasn't really anything wrong. I now have very little nail on two of my fingers and on one it has pealed away from the nail bed almost entirely. I have just had yet another doctor but he actually took samples to have them tested but have come back negative... I'm really running out of options and my career and job are both at steak.... I was just wondering if anyone has any success stories or suggestions as to what works and if your nails and cuticles grow back eventually undamaged.

I had my toe nail clippings sent for examination and they came back not fungal however they are so thick, normal scissors wont cut them, funny shape, smell and are disgusting to look at.My son read that vicks vapour rub can help and I laughed after two years without sandals this is really working and has helped a few friends with similar but not so severe conditions. wash feet, dry between toes also, rub well into the nail.Has to be done twice a day until you start to see an improvement and still dont stop until clear. working for me, hope it works for you.
