Otitis Externa

Otitis Externa

Otitis externa is an infection of ear canal that is often referred to as swimmers ear. It can be caused by an infection or an allergic reaction within the outer ear. A mild form of the condition can result in a single spot occurring that causes localised pain, but which disappears when the spot bursts. More serious cases involve the spread of the condition to the outer ear and scaly skin being produced. There is also the possibility that pus and other discharge can occur as well. Localised cases will normally heal of their own accord, but if it is acute and continues then antibiotics and professional cleaning of the ear will often be prescribed.

i suffer from otitis externa, its started a year and half ago when i got a bad ear infection on holiday in margarita, when i returned home i had constant ear infections, i would go to the doctors get antibiotics and ear drops and it would dissapear for a week and then return. my ears got really itching and started weeping alot. it was only 3 months ago that a doctor decided to do a swab and it showed that i had candida in my ears. i was treated for that but then my ears starting playing up again this time i was in agony and was prescribed oral anti biotics and ear drops again along with oramorph for the pain. it got so bad i went to an out of hours ent specialist, the explained everything to me, gave me micro suction, put a wick in my so the drops would actually go where needed to be and not drip out. everything cleared up for a few weeks but now its back again and im losing my hearing. ive done everything the doctors have told me to do, i dont get my ears wet, i dont use cotton buds, i try not to itch my ears but still i have problems and im fed with it, i dont know how much longer i can put up with this. i suffer from depression any way and this ear problems just drags me down. i wish some one would give me a long term solution.

hi, it was about 3years ago when i noticed my ear was itching alot in the inner canal, i just thought it was an itch nothing more until the dreaded fluid like wax started ouzing out! this i found extremely embarrased about as i felt the whole world was starring at me and i even stopped going out. i have had numerous diagnostics from my doc and have now been told its otitis externa. i have been using otimize ear spray of which i apply as soon as i get that itch to hold it back. Its not nice to have i hate it and have accepted that i will have this for the rest of my life...i wish there was a cure! I also beleive that it is contagious as my girlfriend now has it..is that true? can it be contagious if the fluid gets on some1 else?

its a vicious circle, i have had terrible acure recurrent otitis externa for my entire life. the eczema is the main problem, but the more i apply emmolients to moisturise and heal the ecxema, the more likely my ears are to become infeted. once infected the ears are too painful to treat the excema effectively. i sometimes use steroids if the excema is particularly bad (my ears and all around peel and crust) but this thins the skin, and then its even more prone to crack. the worst part is when they sometimes weep and it gets in my hair, and i get so paranoid that i smell, also it actually will drip, and i have to change pillows. but this thins the skin, and then its even more prone to crack. nightmare. the only thing that i can reccommend is earcalm spray, betnovate ointment to maintain a few times a week, and a really greasy moisturiser such as bepanthen or vaseline twice daily over the entire area. its such a nightmare, so embarrassing.

Blocked ear....possible perforated eardrum? should i worry? have I got an infection?:o(? my ear has been blocked for a few weeks now and is REALLY annoying me. It was really bugging me so i wiggled a small cotton swab around to try to remove some wax (stupid i know). it wasnt in long and i pulled it out after a few seconds. I then started rubbing behind my ear cos i was once told it loosens up the wax? (is this true?) however, Instead of feeling my ear "unplugging" and wax loosening, i felt a feeling of liquid being released? i put another swab inside (quickly - in and out) and when i pulled it out, there was some (not much) blood on it??? Blood didnt pour out my ear. I wouldnt have known it was blood if i didnt stick another swab in... have i damaged my ear drum?????? im a bit worried?? should i be??? my ear doesnt hurt....still feels blocked....and still have limited hearing because of the blockage.. the right side of my face feels like theres pressure on it?? a slight numbing feeling??? and feels like an elastic band is wrapped around my head?? and i feel tired....have i got an infection? Ive got some drops in it at the moment to help remove the wax... should i be worried?? do i need to go to the hostpital?? can i get meningitus? is it infected? i know your gonna say "go to the docs" put please, is this normal for an ear infection?? please put my mind at rest.... thanks ;o)

I tried vaseline which softened up the skin but never fully cured it. I visited a GP a while ago that prescribed a steriod cream but it had little effect. I re-visited the GP recently and mentioned this by name and he confirmed I have this in my ears and was prescribed Benovate. It really helps but it takes a while and constant use.

I get otitis externa fairly frequently and have done for about the past 10 years - especially after a lot of swimming e.g. when on holiday - I now always make sure I wear ear plugs when swimming and I should block my ears when showering and washing my hair. I've been told I have eczema in my ears but Otimize ear spray really works for me - I take it when my ears start to itch a lot - with Otimize and ear plugs, I get far less ear infections than I did.

Otitis externa is a condition that affects more than 1% of the population in the UK every year. It causes inflammation (swelling) of the external ear canal, which is the tube between the outer ear and the ear drum (known as the tympanic membrane). Anyone can get otitis externa, but it is slightly more common in women than in men. Read More »
