Conditions
Ovarian Cysts
An ovarian cyst is a growth or swelling on, or inside, the ovary (the female reproductive system that releases an egg every month), which can either be solid or filled with fluid. If solid, the cyst may be called a “tumour”, which, with all its cancerous connotations, can be particularly terrifying. However, you’ll be relieved to know that it’s just the medical term for any swelling and the vast majority of ovarian growths are benign and not cancerous. There are several types of ovarian cyst, but the most common is a functional ovarian cyst, of which there are two types: a follicular cyst and Corpus luteum cysts. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition that causes women to develop lots of small, benign cysts on their ovaries, which develop due to a hormonal imbalance. Symptoms can include pain and discomfort low down in the abdomen, which can come and go, and may be more noticeable after sex and changes to periods.

I have PCOS and I was treated for it by using the oral contraceptive (The pill) This was fine from when I was 18 - 21. Since then I have had no period so I was put on Metformin, which did not work. Was given Northisterone (Which game me a terrible bleed) then I took the pill again. Now I have been told I am not allowed to take the pill as it caused a cyst on my cervix. I am rather worried how I need to regualte my periods and what contraception to use. As every Dr I have spoken to keeps passing me on to somebody else. SOS.

Hi all, its so nice to read what all you other women out there have put down. I'm 22 now and was diagnosed with pcos at the age of 13 through ultra sound scans. It's so true the Dr's really don't care, they all seem to give different information all the time. I can't take the pill so I was given a drug called METFORMIN its really helped regulate my periods it can also be taken with the pill. The Dr and my Gynaecologist told me its a drug they also use to try help women with pcos get pregnant, if you google metformin for pcos it brings up all the information, but please don't buy it over the Internet go see you Dr/Gynaecologist about it. It hasn't helped me get pregnant as me and my partner have not been on any contraception for two years now, but don't let that down hearten you as everyone's bodies react different to others, and it could work for you. I'm really glad that I've come on this site and seen all the comments, because i get times where i feel really down because of it and feel like I'm the only one that has it. None of my friends have it so they don't understand. I have facial hair and in all the other places a woman shouldn't have it thanks to my pcos, but I've been to see my Dr who referred me to the dermatology clinic in my local hospital about having laser hair removal. At last a step forward I've been accepted to have it funded by the health board. Its wrong that we don't get offered more help because I had been to see a few of the Dr's in the surgery and been crying with them as I'm so conscious about it and they all said I wouldn't be able to have it done. Then I went to see the Dr that's the head of the surgery and he then referred me. They will only fund the face to be done, but the face everyone sees. It all works by postcode apparently, some of you might be lucky and have all you problem areas treated, if you were interested in laser hair removal. I'm finally having my test patch done on the 19th of this month. I really hope some of what I've put can be of some help to some of you. It would be nice to hear from you because it's really nice to know I'm not the only one that's scared of not being able to have a family, and feel alone at times.
I`ve found out that I have a cysts on my ovary and I`m convinced that it is getting bigger. I`m due for yet another scan in April, but I`m scared that they will have to remove my whole baby-making-organs. Will this happen? Please reassure me :(
Hi, i have been suffering with pcs for over 10 years now even though im only 22...let me reassure you, after more scans and internal examinations than i can shake a stick at iv had big cysts, little cysts, new cysts and abnormal ones. Iv never had a period and as much as i want a baby later on in life i have decided to stop treatment with agreement from my doctor because, well, who would want a period! there is a small risk involved with not having regualr treatment but due to medical allergies i cannot have much of the regular treatment and the other stuff...well, it threw me into a hormonal wreck!! I must admit, i get very upset with my 'excess hair' problems and do suffer bad tummy cramps but, im genrally alot healthier than alot of people so i grin and bear it. cysts are all different shapes and sizes and a growth is very normal!! IF, they are growing and your doc feels the need for them to be removed...well, its keyhole surgery and they whip them right off. My mum had polycystic ovaries three times before each of her three children including me!! So there is hope!! just, keep on top of any medication they do give you and just keep asking questions!! im by no means a doc so we are all different, but i do have both ovaries covered and there has been no talk of taking away my woumb/ovaries or tubes!! chin up!!! x
is polycystic ovary syndrone associated with depression?
According to my doctor, depression can be one of the things that comes with PCOS. I've suffered depression since I was 14 (which was roughly when I first got my period) and I'm still on tablets for depression although I'm almost 22 now. Everyone I know believes that I have PCOS, but the tests were inconclusive. =o[
Hi, i had surgery a year ago due to appendicitis that had burst, since then my periods have been 3-5 days late every month....my two sisters have pcos which now worries me, in case i have it.....does anyone know if that change is possible at 28???
to every body who needs advice, im not an expert but as a fellow pcs sufferer i may be able to help. for the excessive hair there is a cream called vaniqua, it works by slowing down the hair growth just ask your gp for it, its really good stuff. anyone has been diagnosed with pcos should request a blood sugar level and thyroid function test, this is because pcos is caused by a hormone and insulin deficeincy. (gps often leave you in the lurch and dont tell you everything you need to know, hense why should request on your own). as for getting pregant, it can still happen for us it might just take us more time, if youve been trying for a keep a chart your periods and work when your ovulating, then go to your doctors show them your charts and tell them how long youve been trying and they might give fertility treatment which is jujust a tablet which makes your ovaries release lots of eggs rather thanm just one a month. if your periods are irregular or dont have any periods at all, and you want one( which is what happened to me, i didnt have a period for over a year and i just didnt feel natural) go to your tell them your not happy about cycle for whatever reason and than give you a contraceptive pill called dianette. i used it to regulate my periods and also stopped some of the pain i was getting. im sure theres other treatments they can you i just dont think they like to broadcast it. Also everytime i go to the doctor about my pcos, i tell i have reall bad pain, they tell me that pcos doesnt usually cause pain, IGNORE THEM. at the end of the day we know our bodies better than anyone, they may have had all the training but they havent experienced that pain where you feel like someone grapped your ovaries and is squeezing, twisting, pulling and stabbing you. if pain killers dont work for the pain, a hot water bottle is a godsend or even a tens machine. i hope this helps.
hi charlotte, i suffer from pcos too. i was diagnosed after blood test and an ultra sound, plus the list of symptoms. i used to get very upset about the excessive hair on my face and even my ears had little white hairs on them that looked like fuzz. people used to call me a hamster. the doctor prescribed me vaniqa cream which was brilliant, it doesn't stop the hair growing but it slows it down and almost make it thinner, (i even use it on my eyebrows so i dont have to pluck them so often). as for getting pregnant women with pcos can get pregnant naturally it might just take us a bit longer, and if it doesnt happen that way, then doctors can give you a fertility drug which sounds really scray but it basicaly just makes you release more eggs during the month rather than just one. i know its a horrible thing to have but there is light at the end of the tunnel. also you should get your gp to do a blood sugar level test. because pcos is caused by a hormones and insulin it might be worth while just getting checked out and while your at it a thyroid function test as that regulates your hormones too. good luck
