Conditions

Ovarian Cysts

Benign ovarian cyst

An ovarian cyst is a growth or swelling on, or inside, the ovary (the female reproductive system that releases an egg every month), which can either be solid or filled with fluid. If solid, the cyst may be called a “tumour”, which, with all its cancerous connotations, can be particularly terrifying. However, you’ll be relieved to know that it’s just the medical term for any swelling and the vast majority of ovarian growths are benign and not cancerous. There are several types of ovarian cyst, but the most common is a functional ovarian cyst, of which there are two types: a follicular cyst and Corpus luteum cysts. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition that causes women to develop lots of small, benign cysts on their ovaries, which develop due to a hormonal imbalance. Symptoms can include pain and discomfort low down in the abdomen, which can come and go, and may be more noticeable after sex and changes to periods.

I've heard on the show that the cyst also decrease fertility. Is the fertility worse to the same extent whether one is diagnosed and treated and when she's not?

hi there i am 27 years old and suffer from pcos i havent had a period since i miss carried in 2006 im starting to get alot of facial hair and have since developed an underactive thyroid which has caused me to gain a few stone im at my wits end with this as im always being told to lose weight ive gone from a size 24-16 and drs are still saying this i feel that i cant go to the drs anymore as they are not helping me what can i do??

Im 17, A year and a half ago i had an operation for apendicitus and the doctor told me during my operation He found i had some Cysts in my ovaries which were bursting and causing me pain due to loose fluid but i didn't even realise because i thought the pain was normal. He didn't explain to me properly what it was and i've been left a little confused ever since, from the other discriptions i've read im not sure if i have PCOS because i dont have ecessive hair or weight gain and my periods come pretty regularly although i've always thought they have been very heavy (i generally wear night time pads all the time rather than ordinary) and particularly painfull to the point where i take some of my mums perscription pain killers. i get pain ramdomly all the time but its always the same pain and it can be pretty agonising. im not really sure what to do because its rare that a doctor will listen to a teenager complaining about period pains. i also get pain the morning after sex which im beggining to think is linked. Im pretty confused as to wat to do and need some advise please! :)

hi,i need help wth my pcos its getting me down so much and i have put on so much weight,i am lucky enough to have a 2 year old daughter, but find it hard going places due to my weight and eccesive hair plz help

i think i might have pcos. i am 20 years old, had my first period when i was 16, but no more until i went to the pill. i also went on the pill to sort out my horrendous acne. i was on the pill for two years. it did the job, but is not a long term cure, as i have just come off to see if i have actually sorted out my problems or they were being disguised. My spots are rapidly returning on my back, neck and face. i have had no periods since may 09. i have also found a few hairs growing under my chin, on the sides of my underarms (near my boobs), on my toes and feet. all these symptoms point to pcos, yet i am not overweight, and do not have a problem keeping weight off at all. I have a perfect bmi for my petite 5ft height. i just wanted advise and other options to look into.

hey, i am 24 years old and was diagnosed with pcos when i was 19. i started my periods when i was 9 and have had bed ridden pains, sickness and the runs since then. i was put in the pill when i was about to 13 to help. i have tried different pills and been to the doctors loads of times. i was told that i am not likely to concieve without fertility treatment. i pilled on the wieght, im about 5foot 2 and was about 15 stone. i have got down to around 13. i can get awful pain when me and me and partner have sex, so much so that i have been sat on the loo afterwards for up to half an hour. i take my pill straight through as in i dont have a 7 day break. my las period was january before that i dont remember. i have had scans, including internal. im lucky as i sont get too hairy just a few little hairs between my boobs that pluck. im at the end of my tether as it can even hurt in my abdomen when i cough. any advise would be highly grateful as i am fed up with it now. thanks.

Hello,I am 17 and I have been confirmed by my GP as having PCOS after blood tests and an ultra-sound. I have a period about every four months and when i do have a period, they last for up to six weeks sometimes. I am also over weight and cannot loose it, even after trying many different diets. I also have a hairy body and face – which i have to shave, but wish i never did becuase it grows back too fast and is really embarrasing having stubble. I don't know what to do about the hair apart from shave it.

i came off the pill about 2 years ago and found that my periods stopped, i contacted my gp who took some bloods which confirmed i had pcos which would comfirm the weight gain too, at first i was so upset but he put me back on the pill to help regualte my periods now i have come back of my pill i didnt have a period for 3 months but had one at the begening of the month i just hope they start to become regular i have heard of a drug that calms weight gain and unwanted hair down its called metformin which is also used for diabetics but only on prescription.
