Premature Greying

Going prematurely grey

Becoming a refined, silver-haired beauty like former newsreader, Anna Ford, or a ‘silver fox’ like Des Lynam, is perfectly acceptable with age. However, grey hair can sometimes besiege the bonces of the young, often during the teenage years. Interestingly, we all begin life with white hair, which then gets its natural colour before birth due to the formation of the pigment melanin. This subsequently gives us our beautiful and uniquely coloured flowing locks, which usually turn grey between the ages of 35-50 as part our genetic inheritance. Premature greying is often a symptom of Premature Ageing syndromes, but there are many other reasons why it occurs, such as genetic or hormonal factors; external reasons, such as climate, pollutants and toxins; or an underlying medical condition, such as poliosis, which causes localised patches of white hair, or the skin condition vitiligo. Get checked out by your GP if you’re worried. Otherwise, you can either go grey gracefully or reach for the mahogany hair colour.

I am 14 and have noticed 5 or 6 grey hairs growing after my friend pointed one out at school. My mum went grey when she was 20 but i'm only 14. I haven't told her about it yet but theres nothing she could do anyway. When it gets worse I want to dye my hair but i'm worried everyone will notice.

I've been going grey since i was 16 -and dyed my hair from my 20's onwards. Now in my 50's hav decided the hair dying looks so synthetic to maintina my 'brunete locks' that I would go -grey -well its mainly white.....with just a few highlights in it -looks fab and wished i had done this earlier....so yes go GREY but with a few foils it doesn't have to look harsh or aging but instead can look beautiful... :) And cheaper to maintain too!!!

i am 28 and have got grey hairs appearing at a really rapid rate . i have had lots of serious injurys in the past , ive been ran over by a drink driver at high speed causing head injurys and a snapped tibia bone in my leg . Ive also broken both my bones in my wrist at the same time. Trying to do a back flip out of a tree when i was younger , 1 of my bones was a compound fracture (when it happened i thought it was a stick in my arm and tried to pull it out , it wasnt a stick - it was my bone ) , i have been in a motor bike accident , i was riding it @ 40 mph and hit a patch of diesel on the road . It ripped my left knee to pieces . I have broke my left knee on a skate park jumping the bike off the ramp. I have front lobal damage , could this be the reason i am gettin a grey hairs growing so young and so quick , can there be any serious problems to watch out for now i am producing grey hair this quickly ? ? ?

I got my first grey hair at 13, first grey eyebrow hair at 21, now I'm 30 and about 75% grey. I think it's absolutely fantastic. Naturally a dark brunette, all I have to do is dye my hair with a dark blonde dye (that doesn't contain a bleach) and I have the most amazing highlights for just £5 a month! EVERYONE comments on how beautiful it is. My advice, experiment! Grey dyes really well, and I've been able to have bright blue/red/yellow streaks in my hair whenever I wanted (like for festivals etc and my friends get VERY jealous!!!)
