Conditions

Prolapsed Rectum

This is just as painful as it sounds unfortunately, and can result in you not being sure if you need to go the toilet or not. A prolapsed rectum is when the rectum is pushed out through the anal opening when gearing up for a number 2. If the condition worsens, the rectum may protrude substantially at all times, which can be incredibly uncomfortable. It is often caused by straining too much when you go the toilet, it can be a side effect of giving birth, or can be a condition you are born with. Whilst doctors are not quite sure what causes it, it usually affects the young and the elderly, but fortunately there are surgical procedures to correct this condition.

Hi. I am 40 yrs old after having my second child a year ago i have been suffering with what feels like a rectal prolapse. My 6wk check up after giving birth showed that my rectum was pushing down on the wall of my vagina. I am constantly aware of the problem and feel that it worsens when i am constipated ,the physical demands of my little boy seems to also effect this and also my diet which incidenlty is healthy but can cause an increase in wind this then adds to the discomfort.. My Gp basically said that this was the outcome of childbirth and it would be something i would have to put up with... I suppose what i would like to know is how bad does it have to be before i think about surgery? Are there other options?

Hi my daughter is 2 and she had a rectal prolapse 2 days ago,, we went to a&e who then transferred us to another hospital to see a specialist,, once we arrived there a nurse came to check her, they had put a dressing over it in previous hospital and s nappy on also, so at the hospital once the nappy had been taken off the prolapse had gone back inside! Yesterday my daughter didn't go to the toilet at all, even though she is regular, but she did go today and I watched her like a hawk! It started to come out again,, I pleaded with her to stop pushing and just had to take her off the toilet,, I squashed her bum checks together to help push it back it, this did work, bur I can't be doing this every time she has a poo! Please can anyone give me any advice?

I have suffered the misery of a rectocele in my anus for nearly two years causing embarrassing incontinence at times. Seven weeks ago, my surgeon operated and stitched my uterus to my sacrum, I understand and also encased my bowel in mesh and stitched that up higher. My anus is now tight again, Im pleased to say but my bowel movements are changed from before. I first took Fybogel on leaving hospital for two weeks and now take it once a day which appears to keep my bowels moving. I also took Lactulose initially when I had problems. That certainly works but would only take that now if I had real problems. GP said it will take 6 months to get back to normal and any heavy lifting is out of the question. It is an utter relief not to have the rectocele problem any more, probably caused by weak muscles. I have had three children and am now 80.

Ive had diarrhoea for approx 2 and a half years. Have to take several Loperamide daily. I also have to 'help' it out as it is getting stuck in the small rectocele found by Gp. He also diagnosed IBS several years ago. Also have nausea and vomiting problems though these two seem to be easing, lots of mucus, stools usually orange in colour, leaks esp if I forget the Loperamide. Had a fissure op in 95. Was referred recently, consultant couldnt see the rectocele despite my symptoms, (I also often get a dull pain) had a colonoscopy on Wed the 12th, was told it was normal, just waiting for the 6 biopsies to come back but not holding out much hope for an answer to my problems. Now Im worried that all Ill get is a letter of results, discharged and thats that, back to square one. I am kind of hoping I WILL get a follow-up appointment to get some answers and what, if anything, to do next.

THe surgery fixed your prolapse but the cause of it is a weak pelvic floor. Ask your GP to refer you to a womens physio, you need to strengthen up your pelvic floor and lower abdominal or it will happen again. try to avoid constipation, watch your weight. You could try a pelvic exercise machine if you find the manual squeezing exercises impossible to do (this is quite possible because your muscles are weak - you wont be able to feel them to squeeze and 'pull up') look at Kegel8 or Athena Pelvic Toner, they will help. Please do not put up with pain, ask your GP for help, but also you have to watch your weight, not smoke etc, and be proactive in your own health. So many other women suffer, we should be thankful to Embarassing bodies for highlighting this issue and helping us to help each other.

I have been suffering from the same problem for more than 7 years.I had a proctogram test and was diagonised with a rectocele that is a hernia in my bowel.Stool gets trapped in the hernia thats why you find it difficult to pass stool and when u stand up the stool trapped in the hernia moves down causing you to have difficulty with bottom hygiene. The bowel specialist refered me for bowel feedback theraphy.its helpful as the bowel training equips you with skills of emptying your bowel wthout straining.Request to be referred to a bowel specialist.

When I was 7 years old (roughly) (i'm now late 20's) I remember being constipated and deciding to massage my anal opening with a piece of tissue to encourage bowl movement,I felt relieved from discomfort and saw this as a solution. however, I started to do this on a regular basis even when I wasn't constipated. Eventually, it became physically harder and I then had to strain a lot more and insert my fingers into my anal passage remove my stools. Overtime this became normal. I have tried unsuccessfully on many occasions to pass stools in the normal human manner, i am totally incapable of doing so. I seemed to have lost use of rectal muscles or something like that and have very little sensation when passing motion with the aid of my fingers. Passing motions is now a 30 minute event for me (how embarrassing). Overtime this seems to have led to many related problems such as lower abdominal pain, particularly to my right side. I seem to always have trapped wind as I can't disperse of it without great strain and effort, When I do pass wind there's often a thick, clear- slightly yellow, jelly like mucus. This mucus also covers my stools and occasionally leaks from my anus without warning. I also have a pressured feeling in my rectal canal. I also suffer from a throbbing type ache/pain in my rectum. I also have lower, inner back pain. My vagina produces a white, runny, odorless discharge, it produces significant amounts when I strain to pass motion. I don't enjoy vaginal intercourse, as there is very little sensation, in fact I have experienced pain on the odd occasion, due to this I have never had an orgasm whilst having full sexual intercourse. I have made appointments to see my G.P but have never been able to clearly/properly explain my issues. One doctor shrugged me off, not quite believing me. A few doctors have palmed me off with I.B.S tablets, I know this is not I.B.S!. I even once wrote a letter to hand over to my d.r, but failed to hand it in, as I'm so scared. I wrote into another forum along time ago and the only feed back I got was people with similar problems, but not much advice, one person even mocked me saying that they bet I've got a terrible diet and it's because of that!, my diet is very healthy.I haven't ever told anyone in person about this before, I'm far to ashamed, I feel disgusted by myself. All of this is a major hindrance,I'm in total desperation, please help.

Hi, I have exactly the same as you and have been to see a specialist where I was diagnosed as having a rectal ulcer. I would ask your doctor to have you referred to see a specialist.

I really feel for you .. I had my first child 4 yrs ago(by section) & ever since have not been able to pass stools - have been to doc so many times which has resulted in me having to take laxative ever since...Im now at the stage were i have to take to much to give me diorrhea every day - otherwise nothing will happen - I too get the mucus type stuff passing as well & have achy type pain in my rectum & lots of lower back pain - also pass discharge from vagina - have a doc app for next week but like you i know I probably wont get all syptoms explained properly - to make it worse I was quite uncomfortable the other day so decided to have a look(down there) & when I put pressure on as if I'm going to pass a stool a bit of what I can i can only describe as my insides come out ...........help!! :(

Hi, this happened to my daughter when she was 2 and first used the potty. She was referred to a consultant who said the low potties can be to blame if the muscles are weak, and after she started using a chair type potty it never happened again. Basically the consultant said to make sure she wasn't in a squatting position to do a poo and she preferred patients to use the seats you put over the toilet, with a footrest. My daughter is now 12 and has never had any similar problems since. Hope this helps.

I have a five year old son and this has happened to him on several occasions, he has seen a specialist about this but they gave us three options two of which were surgical and the other to see if he grows out of it. They could not explain why this happened and why it continues to happen but we have succumed to leave him be for a while as the surgical options could go wrong and leave him with a bag for the rest of his life. We were told though if and when it does happen that we were to take him straight to a&e where he would be given morphene on arrival. It is very sad that children of such a young age should be left to suffer like this. But unfortunetley they just could not explain why it happens.
