Prominent Adam's Apple
An Adam’s apple (or laryngeal prominence) is caused by the protrusion of the thyroid cartilage which forms part of the larynx. Everyone has an Adam’s apple. It allows air to get to the lungs and enables us to speak – all in all it’s pretty vital. For obvious reasons Adam’s apples are often seen as a male only trait, but this simply isn’t true. The thyroid cartilage is comprised of two laminae fused together at an angle. This angle tends to be acuter in men than women so sticks out more thus making the Adam’s apple more visible in the male sex. The prominence of the Adam’s apple varies from person to person and can occasionally be as noticeable in some women as men. There are no real reasons for this, it’s like the difference between people’s faces, and there are certainly no health implications. However, some women with a pronounced apple do feel embarrassed deeming it masculine and unattractive but this in no way means that they’ll sound like the honey monster’s ugly twin sister. It’s purely a cosmetic issue and will not make a female voice abnormally deep. If the formation is particularly noticeable and causing considerable distress to the woman reduction surgery is available; it’s called Chondrolaryngoplasty and is most commonly used amongst transgender patients. Luckily, the procedure isn’t too complex. Whilst in men, over time, the thyroid cartilage turns to bone in women it remains as cartilage which is much easier to cut through meaning that Chondrolaryngoplasty surgery is a simpler operation to carry out on the fairer sex.

I have a five year old daughter with a very protruding adams apple. It was very noticable from birth, and lately she has been telling me that the lump is bothering her. Is this something that she will grow into or will it be noticable all her life?
i am 21 years old and i first noticed this lump (adams apple) on my throat when i was about 11, it has caused a lot of anxiety over the years and its something i think about every day and worry in case anyone is looking at it as i find it very masculine. i went to the doctors once but they told me there was nothing they could do for me and i have never found the confidence within myself to go again. i have looked into the operation online but it is very costly. it has put a dampner on my social life and a few people have commented about it, particually the bullies in school. i hate having my picture taken as it stands out a lot. can anyone give me any advice in which i could take to the doctor if i can find the confidence? thanks
i had chondrolaryngoplasty last year and i have this visible scar on my throat. it become even more noticeable. the only good thing about it is i dont have any protrusion when viewed sideways. i am tired of putting concealer everyday. i hope that my scar will eventually disappear. did you have the same problem?
when i swallow, it fills like i have a lump in my throat, fills like it about the same place as my adams apple...any clues??
I have a benign thyroid which I think causes the same issue...the lump feels more prominent when I am tired or ill. It could be an over/under active thyroid I was told.
my adams's apple is proeminent and my voice is not at all affected. In fact i'm a jazz singer in a soprano tune. On the other way, I thought it is unhealthy and it has to do with my tiroid gland...I'm happy i've ran over this on the internet! You do a great job guys!
