Squint
Question: What do Barbara Streisand and Abraham Lincoln have in common? Answer: They both started out life with a pronounced squint (technically know as a ‘strabismus’). A squint is when the eyes are misaligned and do not look in the same direction, causing one eye to turn inwards, outwards or sometimes upwards, while the other eye looks forward. The condition affects 5-8% of children (1-2 in every 30) and around four in every 100 adults. Treatment for a squint is most effective in very young children, as the condition will not naturally disappear as the child gets older (in fact, the sight in the affected eye will gradually get worse). Treatment for adults can come in the form of Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injections, administered into the target eye muscle with a very fine needle. (The eye-patch you were offered as a child never sounded so appealing!)

I have had a lazy eye since birth, had 2 operations in my very early years but they failed to work. Im now 21 and have started to really nitice the porblem, It can become very difficult when at work talking to customers and they think your talking to someone behind them. I had an appointment at the hospital over a year ago when they said they wanted to give me the Botox treatment but unfortuantly I chickened out of it. I have an eye test today and I am going to ask for her to refer me to the hospital again, Ive moved to a different part of the country now so fingers crossed ill get refered and I will definately go for it this time. I think this website is so good for all ages. I wish I had it in my school years.
Hi, I am a 64 year old lady who has had a misaligned eye for some years now. My problem is that I really don't see well even with glasses. I have dreadful trouble whenever I need a change of prescription. I have a prism on both sides but getting them to balance is a nightmare,it's never right first time, and on one occasion it was a full 3 months before I could see satisfactorily. I have permanently uncomfortable eyes. I was referred to the hospital by one optician because of double vision, and I asked about an operation. I was told that it didn't have a very good success rate on adults. Please can you help me with some advice, I really would love a permanent solution?
I work as an Orthoptist dealing with patients with squints. If you are concious of your squint or concerned by the appearance, ask you GP or optician to refer you to your local Orthoptic department at the hopital and we can assess if any further treatment ie surgery is possible

hi, i have a really bad turn in my eyes and had to wear pescription glasses from the age of 6monts and now im almost 21years and i wore eye patches when i was younger to help my eyes and it still has not made any difference at all. i have tried lots of contact lenses and i carnt wear them because my eyes get really dry and i dont like them because i carnt see what i see out of my glasses. i would like to know is there anything that i mite be able to do because i hate wearing my glasses.
I had squint surgery in November of last year and it has changed my life completely. I am now 42. I have had two operations previous to this. One when I was 2 and the next when I was 16. The latter was terrible, it took over two years for the white of the eye to lose the blood shot look. The eye gradually started to drift over the years, initally when I was tired and then more recently it just stayed out to the corner of my eye. It was hard for people to know if I was looking at them. It then took all my courage to go to the Doctors to ask to see a specialist. On seeing the specialist I had to have an operation to remove the scar tissue from the previous two operations, and was given botox to freeze the muscle to bring the eye back to a straight position. Botox only last for about 3 months but it was a test to see whether I got double vision when the eye was straight. I didn't, so the specialist decided the next course of action was surgery to have the squint corrected. I had the surgery done under general anaesthetic but the stitches were left untied, so when I came round the surgeon could adjust the position of the eye, something I was dreading but which was nothing to worry about.
Now 6 months on I am alot more confident when I chat to people face to face, and the eye recovered quickly.
All credit goes to my surgeon Mr Malhotra who did such a splendid job. Something my optician also said when I went to get new glasses recently.
Born with a squint and had several op's as a child. Glasses perscription is strong (like looking through the bottom of a milk bottle!) I can't even wear them infront of my husband but now I wear monthly disposable lenses so am never unable to see – even during the night when my children wake up. My eyes are quite dry so I have to take them out occasionally but they've made a huge difference to my self-confidence
hi, ive had a lazy eye for as long as i remember, its realy starting to get me down now to the point i dont want to go out. i went to my doctor who wasnt a lot of help, i was wondering if there was any surgical procedures that could be dont to help me?
