Conditions

Teeth Discolouration

Stained teeth

Teeth can become discoloured for a number of reasons, and often the effect is temporary and can be attributed to food or drink, such as coffee, red wine or beetroot. Smoking also causes teeth staining, resulting in a nicotine smile that won’t see you dazzling anybody with your pearly whites. In addition, however, there are several diseases that can affect the tooth enamel and underlying dentin. If a nerve dies within a tooth, the tooth will darken as the nerve sheds material into the dentin. The tooth can be capped to cover the discolouration, or a bleaching solution can be utilised to whiten it. A number of other conditions can contribute to wider tooth discolouration, such as certain antibiotics and chemotherapy.

Having suffered with mental health issues for some years, I'm ashamed to admit i have been neglectful with my dental hygiene, i have 4 teeth that are becoming loose on the bottom. I don't qualify for free dental treatment and cannot afford to pay dentist fees, is there anything else i can do?

This is the exact reason for me looking on this website! I am 34 and suffered Anorexia at 14yrs old & have relapsed numerous times over the years. In my mid twentys my teeth suddenly seemed to be breaking in half leaving half a empty shell in my gum. Over 8-10 years my dentist managed to salvage just one & crowned it but the others have been beyond repair. Over past 10 years I have lost all my main back teeth including a wisdom tooth which snapped before it fully surfaced. I attended a emergency NHS Dentist 2 years ago who cut my gums to push out tooth roots that were left gave me a Plate with 2 canines and 1 other after informing the dental nurse over me I spoke rubbish Anorexia would not cause such damage! Sadly Ive not seen a dentist since and the Plate he supplied has damaged my remaining few good teeth I did have. I was a model years ago but will not allow friends or family to take photos in past 3-4 years as I will no longer smile at all. I have no pictures with my daughter either. I have spoken to many dentist about cosmetic dentistry but am unable to afford to have one implant let alone a mouth full. I do buy prescription toothpaste for anorexics which helped delay it slightly. You need to get this through your dentist. This has a emotional & mental impact everyday in my life yet ive been unable to get any NHS Cosmetic dentistry. I feel as woman you can have breast implants yet anorexics who have generally suffered physically emotionally and mentally are not recognised to recieve this support. If there is anything that can be done to help I would also be extremely grateful to be told about it.!!!!:(

My teeth have become discoloured because I have been on and off (more on than off) antibiotics for more than four months. Will they go back to normal? I don't have much to smile about due to being ill for this long but this is adding insult to injury

I'm 18 and I've lived in discoloured teeth for 5 years now. I have white rectangles on both my front incisor teeth. It's quite annoying, It really affects my confidence. I was bullied in school over it. I would've considered having whitening done to hide discoloured teeth but I costs so much.

I'm 34 and some of my teeth have crumbled. I only have 24 teeth left and at least 5 have crumbled. I brush my teeth twice per day. My dentist told me that it's due to smoking. I have friends who smoke more than I do but have perfect teeth. Why are my teeth doing this and how do I stop it?

There are several brands of kids toothpaste with berry flavour which have a high enough fluoride content to make them effective for children. Look at the packets and they should have a fluoride content of 1000-1500 ppm. However, if there are holes there already then they need treatment at the dentist, toothpaste will not fix the holes or stop the pain!

my son isnt keen on mint either. we buy an apple flavoured toothpaste from lidl they also do a raspberry flavoured one. hope this helps/

You could maybe try a fruity flavored toothpaste? I used to get them all the time when I was about that age because I didn't like the taste of mint. Here's some you can get from the supermarket- http://groceries.asda.com/asda-estore/search/searchcontainer.jsp?trailSize=1&searchString=toothpaste&domainName=Products&headerVersion=v1&_requestid=317422 http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=261983231 You can also find some other fruity ones in Sainsburys. -> http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/index.jsp Good luck!
