Tinnitus

Sufferers of tinnitus can hear noise within their ear or head that is not coming from an outside source. It can be quite common amongst sufferers of colds, but can also be caused by exposure to loud music. Up to 10% of the population suffer from tinnitus and it can range from nothing more than an annoyance to a much more serious condition that can cause problems when sleeping or concentrating. Old age is the most common cause of tinnitus, but it can occur in any age group, and can be self-inflicted by over-indulgence in thrash metal. The most common cause is damage to the hearing nerves that causes a random series of signals to be received by the brain, and interpreted as sound. It can also be caused by ear wax, anaemia, and in rare cases by more serious medical conditions such as tumours. There is no cure for tinnitus, but there are various coping mechanisms that you can discuss with your GP.

Hello I cant answer your question but I have been suffering with dizzyness 24/7 for the last 4 years and no one will help me. I have 2 children and am 23. I find it very hard to go in an elevator because when I get off I still feel like im in it even when im walkin down the street. Four years is avery long time to be dizzy I really wish someone would help me before I go mad. I have suffered from migraie too. Also have funny lights in my eyes 24/7 and sometimes blurred vision. Realy need some help x

Im 45 years old and i have a constant ringing in both ears,it progressively gets worse in the evenings and quieter surroundings. I am having to occupy myself at all kinds of hours in the morning i.e. walking the dog, as I am unable to sleep. I have seen my GP and they told me to simply put warm olive oil in my ear but this has failed to help me in any particular way? I have no idea what I can do and this really is a last resort for me. Please can you let me know of any other remedies for this situation?

I'm 18 and was diagnosed by my GP with tinnitus about a month ago but I knew beforehand what it was. I used to listen to music really loud with headphones in but have stopped since i contracted the ringing in my right ear! I felt like I couldn't go out with my friends but last weekend I went to a party where there was loud music playing but I had purchased some ER20 earplugs. No they're not the most attractive thing to wear but it works! The ringing in the ears is reduced after a night out meaning that the tinnitus doesn't get any worse, it works for me and i'm just learning to live with it and I hope the rest of you do as well because you shouldn't let it control your life :)

I have suffered from tinnitus for the last three years after listening to music too loud through my headphones. It sounds a bit like a hissing noise, which tends to get louder and more high pitched when I'm stressed. When I was first diagnosed I felt very low and isolated. I stopped going out with my friends in fear that some environments would make my tinnitus worse. I decided to seek help and found the British Tinnitus Association. I called their helpline and they were very helpful and reassuring. Using their advice I have managed to come to terms with my condition and now lead a normal teenage life. If you have been diagnosed with tinnitus don't panic! I would advise anyone to get in touch with the British Tinnitus Association. Their helpline number is 0800 018 0527 and they also have a website which has more information on coping with tinnitus, its - www.tinnitus.org.uk/

Have any of you guys heard about menieres disease? I was diagnosed in 2005 after having lost the hearing in my right ear. It also came with vicious dizzy attacks, which can happen at any time. Tinnitus is a feature of this disease. www.menieres.org.uk
