Conditions

Vaginal Tearing

Vaginal tearing

A vaginal tear most commonly occurs during the birth of a baby, when the baby’s head stretches the opening of the vagina. Often the walls of the vagina can stretch sufficiently without breaking, but if not then there is a danger that a tear can occur. During the birth doctors may carry out an episiotomy, which involves making an incision in the perineum, the area between the rectum and the vagina. An uncontrolled birth can occasionally cause severe tearing between the vagina and the anus, so an episiotomy can relieve the pressure. Treatment for vaginal tearing normally involves stitching of the wound, and recovery is normally made within 3-6 weeks. There are secondary complications that can occur, including infection of the perineum area, so it is important for sufferers to always wipe front to back to help minimise the risk of infection.

My youngest child is 11 and this happens to me every time my husband and I have sex. I had an episiotomy with my first child. 3 years later I had my second child and did tear in the same spot. I didn't start having this issue until about 4 or 5 years ago. I have not brought it up to my doctor yet...I forget during my physical. It does tear at times if I wipe to hard as well. It is so uncomfortable and painful. Has anyone had any treatment or repair?

Hi, I gave birth 2 and a half weeks ago and had a terrible birth my baby was back to back and I needed to have a cut made for docs to try pull her out with forceps however I ripped and got a 3rd degree tear . I'm still finding it difficult to walk properly and still have a catheter in as not passing enough urine however was able to pass some and didn't find it uncomfortable like I thought it would . Does anyone no how long it will take to feel better down there and if this is a major problem or will I be ok as at present I feel like I will never have sex again please help . Thanks

I tore my right labia during child birth with my first child. The midwife did not stitch it up and I ended up with 6mnths of antibiotics due to infection. This was extremely painful and I am now left with a large tag hanging off my labia. Is this possible to have corrected ?

Hiya, I had very similar problem with my boyfriend. I am 31 and no kids. From the beginning of relationship things were fine, it started after 2 months, I started to experience pain during the sex. I felt as my boyfriend was actually using the knife instead of his penis. I checked it and I discovered cut in my vagina - at bottom part. It grows back together in 2 days, but it kept happening when we had sex. It got worse, he could not even enter, only about 2 cm and then I felt pain (the tear happened again) and we had to stop. It did not bleed as it is only small cut, but it sting a lot. We unfortunately split up because of it. I could not take it any more. I went to see several gynaecologists, also psychologist, but no one ever heard of it. Only my GP said I might have in my head that sex is bad and I have to change this thinking. In worst case I could have a surgery and they would cut my vagina more open, so tears would not appear. The tear even happened when I went for smear test. I feel my vagina is too small and lost elasticity and the entrance. This never ever happened to me before, I use to have a great sex life. I would love if someone could help me. I wish you a good luck with it, I know exactly how you feel.
