Anal leakage

Brian dropped in to see Dr Christian with a rather pungent problem. Brian had been experiencing leaking from his anus for a number of years but Dr Christian can’t seem to find any obvious cause. He asks Brian to switch to a high fibre diet and to ensure that he wipes himself properly to see if this makes any difference.

I have it, too. Began this year. My doctor thought it was hemorrhoids. The itchiness and discomfort is maddening. I use anusol suppositories to sooth the pain and cottonelle wipes in addition to toilet paper for the most thorough wipe possible. And I stick a preparation H towelette between my cheeks to catch any seepage. Keep it there 24/7. Diet? I drink coffee . Fried foods, yes. Chocolate and sugary beverages yes. Pastries and cakes - yes, yes, yes. Fiber? Some. I'm gonna die if I keep this up.

Cottonelle wipes have a chemical that causes most people to exerience some irritation. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/03/140303083204.htm There are some companies that offer alternatives but you will have to google it.

Hi! Im a 42 years old female. I suffer with anal leaks for soon going to be 2 years. Its just like water comes out of the anus with every urge for a bowel movement . It started after i injured my back and had a neurological damage to l3 nerve. I am not sexually active since my back ingury, but started developing constant UTIs.Then later in about 11 months i had a dramatic change in my bowel habits, I get up to 14 times a day urges for a BM. The urges are kind of weard and they also provoke the urge to pee. My stool is mostly abnormal in size( small bits and peaces or pencil thin like, mostly soft, which is difficult to squeeze out because of the small size. Often i pass mucus without stool. usually my stool is not a loose stool so its not a typical diarrhea. And my anus leaks every time!!!! Some times I feel a leak and I cant squeeze anything out. I wash my self after every trip to the toilet or after every leak with soap and water, I use pads , but no matter what I do I get UTIs non stop! I ve taken plenty of antibiotics, longer term, short term. My life has become a nightmare! I live in washroom and shower, cant go out like a normal person. I also have constant pain and weakness in my leg ( from my nerve gamage). So I hade MRIs done that dont show connection between my nerve damage and anal problems, which first comes to mind i think to everybody. But I can not trust the results 100% cause Im also a victim of terrible mistakes that where done by radiologists and other specialists! Pelvic MRI as in second opinion said something about suspicion of colitis or proctitis, somethin wrong with mucosa there. Other problems, but nothing else that could be connected to anal problem. I hade stool tests done which where normal ( for culture and parasites,) except after one of the antibiotics there was C Diff screened, but not confirmed, whatever the hell that means! So i have " to be careful with antibiotics too" ! I had sigmoidoscopy removed a polyp, otherwise normal I had anomanometry test showed HYPER tonus in anus, it is abnormal, but my gastro says " I dont know what to do with this information" - great doctor! I ve changed my diet, fiber, no coffee, metamucil, nothing stops the leaks! I'm desperate for answers, or suggestions! I'm desperate to stop the leaks!!! Don't know what to do anymore!

I wanted to let you know that I was plagued with the problem of anal leakage combined with rawness and bleeding. I was very miserable and was considering drastic measures. I am very happy to say that it is not an issue at all any more. I went to see a gastroenterologist about the problem and he asked about my bowel habits. I told him I went around 5-8 times per day and less on the weekend. He told me that was a bit much and it was probably related to stress from the job (I work in a busy hospital laboratory). Whatever the cause, he recommended that I take a psyllium fiber supplement daily. Metamucil is one brand name but I take mine in a generic capsule form WITH PLENTY OF WATER. They sell this at all pharmacies and I take three capsules once a day or three teaspoons if taking the powder. He also recommended that I take loperamide as directed for a few days until I slow my bowels down a bit and then only as needed (one brand is Immodium but there are generics). I very seldom need it now. It was life changing and I am not exaggerating! My hemorrhoids are way better and seldom bother me now. I have normal bowel habits and no leakage at all. You may be different but I would encourage you to try it. He made the comment that I need to work from the opposite end. He was right. Good luck there.

thanks william i will try metamucil to see if that solves the problem.

Hi there, I love the embarrassing bodies show. BUT, I'm disappointed in your lack of knowledge or information on this subject that is affecting so many people around the world. On this forum, well done to everyone who contributed and has their own solution to the problem depending on their experience. However, if you search the internet about anal leakage, there is NO solution. NOT ONE medical site can offer a real concrete solution or REASON as to why this happens to people. Furthermore, there is NO medicine advertised that can prevent this! I guess this is another area that is lacking in research due to a lack of funding etc. It is a shame that people have to go through the shame, embarrassment and indignity of this problem with no answer or solution. I myself, have searched for answers.Yes I know that increasing fibre could be the answer. But that didn't work for me always. So I would like to know why this happens. What is causing the problem and what tests can be done to find out what is causing the problem? Of course, no answer! I have been examined by doctors three times. All say that my anal muscles are normal and that there should be no problem. They just say, cut down on the caffeine. So I did. After that, no caffeine. Period! But guess what? No change! This leads me to think that there might be more of a problem than just caffeine or fatty foods. Should we be tested for food allergies or other food issues? Could there be a connection? It would be nice if the medical sites could offer some other suggestions to a solution for the problem. If anyone knows of any knew advances in research or solutions to this terrible uncomfortable problem, please enlighten me or all of us. Thanks CS

I read somewhere that it is due to oils used in fast food ie. Crisps? Certainly worth a try to go without for a week.

I also suffer this problem. The worst thing for me though is I can smell when I am funky. Im early 20's and realised the problem when people made comments like " has someone farted " or "it smells like @#?! In here". Does anyone else suffer from this also?.I spoke to some of my friends about it and they say im paranoid but I think there just good mates. Im going to try and sort my diet out like the other comments suggested, and ill check back in in about a month.

I've got same problem but only started after my hysterectomy, my doctor thinks I have IBS but no test have been done or proper questions asked for them to come to this diagnosis. I do drink wine of an evening but don't eat fatty foods very little sweet foods and I'm only slightly over weight due to having surgery hence no gym. Would love to find a way to cute this problem.

Trying to find a possible cause I wonder if anyone else has had problems from gastrities, in my case from drinking too many soda drinks, and opted for taking Ranitidine for too long. This leaky issues appeared in my case after I suspended Ranitidine, having taken it for a couple of years.
