Episode 5 - Nottingham

Anal leakage

Brian dropped in to see Dr Christian with a rather pungent problem. Brian had been experiencing leaking from his anus for a number of years but Dr Christian can’t seem to find any obvious cause. He asks Brian to switch to a high fibre diet and to ensure that he wipes himself properly to see if this makes any difference.

Hi there, I love the embarrassing bodies show. BUT, I'm disappointed in your lack of knowledge or information on this subject that is affecting so many people around the world. On this forum, well done to everyone who contributed and has their own solution to the problem depending on their experience. However, if you search the internet about anal leakage, there is NO solution. NOT ONE medical site can offer a real concrete solution or REASON as to why this happens to people. Furthermore, there is NO medicine advertised that can prevent this! I guess this is another area that is lacking in research due to a lack of funding etc. It is a shame that people have to go through the shame, embarrassment and indignity of this problem with no answer or solution. I myself, have searched for answers.Yes I know that increasing fibre could be the answer. But that didn't work for me always. So I would like to know why this happens. What is causing the problem and what tests can be done to find out what is causing the problem? Of course, no answer! I have been examined by doctors three times. All say that my anal muscles are normal and that there should be no problem. They just say, cut down on the caffeine. So I did. After that, no caffeine. Period! But guess what? No change! This leads me to think that there might be more of a problem than just caffeine or fatty foods. Should we be tested for food allergies or other food issues? Could there be a connection? It would be nice if the medical sites could offer some other suggestions to a solution for the problem. If anyone knows of any knew advances in research or solutions to this terrible uncomfortable problem, please enlighten me or all of us. Thanks CS

I read somewhere that it is due to oils used in fast food ie. Crisps? Certainly worth a try to go without for a week.

I also suffer this problem. The worst thing for me though is I can smell when I am funky. Im early 20's and realised the problem when people made comments like " has someone farted " or "it smells like @#?! In here". Does anyone else suffer from this also?.I spoke to some of my friends about it and they say im paranoid but I think there just good mates. Im going to try and sort my diet out like the other comments suggested, and ill check back in in about a month.

I've got same problem but only started after my hysterectomy, my doctor thinks I have IBS but no test have been done or proper questions asked for them to come to this diagnosis. I do drink wine of an evening but don't eat fatty foods very little sweet foods and I'm only slightly over weight due to having surgery hence no gym. Would love to find a way to cute this problem.

Trying to find a possible cause I wonder if anyone else has had problems from gastrities, in my case from drinking too many soda drinks, and opted for taking Ranitidine for too long. This leaky issues appeared in my case after I suspended Ranitidine, having taken it for a couple of years.

This is quite a common problem and the best way you can stop it is to stop eating greasy fatty foods as well as chocolate and sugary sweets or candy. Try to eat organic foods and plenty of fruit and fibre. It sure is a common problem and I have suffered for years with it. It is not nice to go out with your best white trousers on and then you suddenly feel the wet from your anus leaking it is to say the least embarrassing. What can you do? As I have said go on a diet, lose weight and eat healthy foods but little and often. Also do not eat too late at night and sleep on it, this will do you no good at all. I have cured it by a healthy diet. Myself I used to have just one meal a day (late at night) and sleep on it. This is where the problem is. Get yourself into a regular sleep pattern and always eat a healthy breakfast (like all-bran) then a snack at lunchtime and then a dinner at least 4 hours before you go to bed. Just be careful and eat healthy food and not too much. If you have to drink then drink water and sugar free drinks.

I have read all the comments above and have the same problem. Though I am in my 70s. Thought it might be age, but now feel it isn't I am sure diet has something to do with it. Chocolate and sugar possible, so am trying to cut them right down. Has anyone a real cure???? I would hate to get known as a smelly old person.

I am trying to change my diet: absolutely no caffeine (no coffee, no tea, no chocolate), no oily foods, no beer, cut down on sugary things. There have been days when I am ok, but if I make the mistake of drinking coffee then within an hour I am leaking. Hope this helps a little

Same thing for me with coffee, when i stopped drinking it, the smells stop. Only one cup got me to leak again. the next day it stopped and never came back. maybe we are intolerant to caffeine.

I've had this problem. But now i'm fine. It depends upon your diet. Minimize the consumption of oily fried foods and i used to eat chocolate cakes a lot..now i dont. So it means too much sugar and oils worsen the problem. I'm taking so many fruits and raw vegetables now and exercise. It has solved my problem.
