Anal leakage

Brian dropped in to see Dr Christian with a rather pungent problem. Brian had been experiencing leaking from his anus for a number of years but Dr Christian can’t seem to find any obvious cause. He asks Brian to switch to a high fibre diet and to ensure that he wipes himself properly to see if this makes any difference.

Hi, My 8 year old son has been having issues with messing in his pants on a daily basis, at first we thought it was through improper wiping and that he was holding in his poo. He seemed to get a little better but recently his underwear is covered with poo and the poor guy is really self conscious. I decided to try and see if there is anything noticeable so I wiped him and got him to move and lay down in that time some poo had leaked out. As a toddler and slightly older child, he would stop himself from pooing for days and days which then resulted on a big build up. I will be taking him to the doctors tomorrow but would appreciate any other advice or insight in to his problem. Thanks in advance.

I would say it is encopresis. Where a child holds his bowel movements for such a time that their colon becomes desensitized and they loose the ability to hold it and it leaks out. See a doctor and they will set up a recovery plan. You can confirm this diagnosis with an x-ray. It usually invokes 'cleaning out' the system with laxatives and then daily stool softener to ensure that the child does not become constipated again. It takes quite a while to fully recover - but don't give up. Take each day with a positive attitude. Your child's self esteem will depend on it.

I have had the same problem. I started drinking cranberry juice 2 glasses a day, I also take a probiotic. The problem has become much better, I do notice coffee, hard alcohol or dark beers will activate the issue. also, high fiber tends to activate, The probiotic really helped its a daily vitamin you take with food,

It seems you have exactly the same problem as me, although I have a gluten intolerance. Ive also been told that our conditions can lead to bowel cancer. I have found how to get rid of these symptoms. I simply stopped all food products containing any gluten based ingredients. It took a week or so, but the problems began to subside. It took time for the injury inside the bowel to heal. Only then did other symptoms begin to clear up. All of this information was supplied by a Doctor whilst I was in France, it just turned out that this was his specialist subject! It maybe that gluten products are still getting into your diet? Even a harmless looking bottle of Ketchup has gluten in it. Hope you get sorted.

My story and my SOLUTION, I have had the same problem for a very long time. I have visited numerous times the doctor. I have had a flexible sigmoidoscopy, I have had a haemorrhoids removed and numerous others tests done. With what effect? None whats over, absolutely nothing helped, I was still leaking and had to wipe every couple of hours. Horrendous as you well know. I have found a cure that works really well for me. I try not to eat fibre, anything with lots of fibre in it goes out the window, no more brown bread, no more beans, lentils, brown pasta. I eat white bread, baguettes, I still have my cereal (Oatbrans or oatmeal) but will not eat Weetabix. I still eat fruit, lots of bananas, kiwis and oranges (oranges high in fibre). Need my vitamin C :) I still maintain a very healthy diet, but whereas I would eat everything high in fibre, I have reduced my fibre intake considerably. Now I don't leak and don't have to use rolls and rolls of toilet paper. I have no problems, I might have the occasional (once every couple of weeks I might need a wipe, but very very very very rare). I really hope this will help some of you as it works for me. I know how you feel and you are not the only one. Good luck, give it a try (eating low fibre foods) and see if it helps.

If you are leaking you might have hemorrhoids. They can cause leakage by opening up the rectum slightly and moisture will leak out and cause a rash. Maybe....

I have a spinel cord injury, I have been experiencing anal leakage, not enough to wet my clothes, but enough for an embarrassing smell. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've had a painful leaky bum for a few months now. I tried cutting back on my different parts of my diet and it turns out milk/dairy products had the biggest effect. So I seem to be lactose intolerant, which is a bummer and means boring food, but greek yogurt seems to help and reduce the impact. It did help for a while, but still leaky.

I think it might be jock itch or a rectal yeast infection. Try Desinex foot powder.

I had Colon cancer back in Dec. 2001. they removed about 2" of the colon. I am cancer free. Thank God. The last year I have anal leakage. wet light brown no blood. I am a 60 yr old male and I find this very difficult to cope with! Doctors tell me it is normal.I do not smoke, drinks on occasions and try to eat healthy 80% of the time. It has destroyed my sex life. Very frustrated. Any suggestions that would help me will be appreciated. Thank You

Don't let it ruin your life. I came across this site because I have been experiencing the same problem but haven't seen a doctor for it yet. It's something that only I know about. I am in a very successful relationship. My faience sees me naked all the time and it isn't noticeable. It won't seep through clothes (at least in my case) I just have to go to the bathroom and clean up a bit through out the day. Cheer up. I'm sure you have a lot going for you and it would be terrible if you let this little part of yourself decide who you are. It's something I've been living with for a while now but I would never let it destroy my confidence. Stay strong. You make the rules. Not your butt.
