Episode 7 - Great Yarmouth
Peyronie's Disease
First to leave the sea front is Victor, whose penis has been bending upwards for the past two years. Dr Christian attributes this to Peyronie’s Disease, which affects about 3 in every 100 men and begins with a small lump of scar tissue in the penis shaft. This develops into a longer, harder scar which makes the penis curve when erect. Victor is also suffering from Dupuytren’s Contracture, a similar condition that can lead to a claw-like hand, and is often found alongside Peyronie’s Disease. An operation may be able to stop Victor’s penis bending, however this might result in a loss of length. Victor sees a specialist, who induces an erection to assess the curvature of his penis. A corrective operation is offered, whereby tissue will be taken from the opposite side of the penis to where the Peyronie’s scarring is, straightening out the curve.

I have a family history of female cancer and was a couple of points away from qualifying for the genetic testing & will start mamograms at 40 instead of 50. You featured a new breast scan suitable for younger women - I'm 30 (my cousin developed breast cancer in her early 30's) are the scans available nationwide? Could you pls supply details of how I could arrange to have one? Thanks x

Hi all... I am 19 years old and i have been suffering with severe right pelvic pain for nearly three years now. It comes and goes monthly. I have been checked for endometriosis and any other reproductive conditions but nothing has been found. Doctors do now believe it is linked to a thinkening of my bladder wall; has anyone got any ideas? Thanks

I would like to whole-heartedly thank Embarrassing Bodies team for this episode. I have been backwards and forwards to various GPs for years with various health complaints; most recently I reported some severe breathlessness and have been wrongly treated for asthma, prescribed diazepam, and threatened with beta-blockers for 'panic attacks'. This show featured a young girl who suffers from a very loud heart murmur, and I recognised the same noise as a sound I hear after a bout of extreme stress or exertion. On Saturday I visited a GP at my local drop in clinic, and I indeed too suffer from a heart murmur, which may well be responsible for some of my health complaints. I am now extremely relieved and grateful to finally have some answers and I'm currently waiting on results of a chest xray which I was only given 'as a precaution' and a date for an echo to discover the severity of the murmur. Had it not been for Embarrassing Bodies, the murmur may well have never been detected and I may have spent years on wrongly prescribed medication. I never would have dreamt that I had a heart murmur in a million years and had it not been for this programme, neither would my GP!

Hi Michelle, I have several sugestions: -See a neurologist to see if you have any type of muscular dystrophy. -Have a very detailed MRI Scan of your spine, especially your lumbar spine -Blood tests to check for VDRL and HTLU 1, Hepatitis B and C (I think you could have these done at an STD Clinic) -Lumbar puncture to detect infection, including herpes -Have you had genital herpes? This could be the cause -Have you had an antibiotic from the Quinolone family? It can cause this type of problem as a side effect, for a long time -Did you have the Swine-flu jab (the Pandemix one available in 2009) about 3 to 4 weeks before your problem started? I hope you find all this information helpful

H Michelle, full blood count tests will not show anything, you have to check for the tests I mentioned earlier. Also an ordinary MRI Scan may not show anything, you have to have a fine cuts MRI of your lumbar spine to check for inflammation and connus lession. You can do some internet research about all the points I mentioned. Don't expect the doctor to say they've done everything possible. You need to know what to ask for. Regards, Pilar

I'm sorry, but my Grandma has severe Scoliosis, that she was obviously born with, the doctor's weren't aware of it until my grandma slipped in a playground when she was 15 and they put her in a full body cast when she was 18, so for the girl's doctor's to tell her that she wouldn't grow anymore after the age of 17, isn't that wrong? My Grandma's now 60 and suffer's with it every day of her life, her spine is so deformed and it's so sad to see, i think that that girl's doctors should get it sorted asap because if there's something they can do about it, then the sooner they do it, the better, right?
