Episode 8 - Periods
Itchy Bottom
First into the clinic is Paul who has been itching to get his embarrassing problem sorted out for 20 years. Paul has been suffering with pruritus ani – an itchy bottom. It is four times more common in men and though the cause is sometimes never identified, it is usually a symptom of infection which is why Dr Pixie has taken a swab. Professor Val analyses the swab and has found nothing abnormal. This leads Dr Pixie to think that Paul’s itching is actually habitual. This is known as having an itch/scratch cycle where an itch causes you to scratch, which then causes damage, which then makes the area inflamed making it even itchier! Paul needs to break this cycle, so he is given a clicker to make him more aware about the number of times he scratches. Slowly but surely he’s not scratching as often as before, but with some will power to stop the temptation to scratch, his itchy bum will soon be a thing of the past.

I am 27 and was recently diagnosed with pcos, my periods stopped altogether over two years ago. I was not offered any treatment by my doctor they said was no point until i lose around four to five stone in weight, i am overweight at fourteen and half stone but the lack of help from doctor not really helped. Anyone else found anything that helps with pcos.
I have suffered with Pruritus Ani for years -used hydrocortisone ointment to break any itch-scratch cycles, but with no lasting solution (to be honest Paul seemed less than convinced by Dr Pixie's 'solution'- I would welcome a follow up after 6-12 months) G.P.s seem to lack a basic curiosity about why this occurs. I know (as one does with one's own body) that there is increased rectal moisture, but inevitably any internal examination is conducted with lubricant, nullifying any observations. The recent Radio 4 programme on gut flora ('Gut Bacteria') reveals the lack of understanding of this most basic yet vital internal ecosystem which we regularly bombard with antibiotics. Undoubtedly itch-scratch is an aggravating symptom of Pruritus Ani but it is simplistic to cite it as the cause.
Hi, I watched the episode and watched the period video but not once has anything been mentioned about if your periods stop altogether? I am on the pill, when I started taking the pill I was still getting periods for a long time but after about a year and a half they started to slow down, they ended up being just brown discharge rather than bleeding and now just completely stopped. is this something that can happen with the pill or should I be worried? Thanks
I am 49 and my last period was really heavy and i kept flooding this lasted for 3 weeks i went to see my doctor who perscibed some tablets to stop the blood loss only to start again 10 days later for yet another week i also lose blood clots, should i be worried ?
Im 31 and came off the pill in December to start trying for a baby. My periods have been regular but this month after my period finished I carried on spotting and have done now for nearly 3 weeks and now I am due on again. Could there be something wrong?
Im 20 years old and have heavy periods and severe adominal pain on the few days before and first 2 days of my period. My period is also largely made up of clots. I have seen a doctor who referred me to a gynaecologist who told me I was too young for a laproscopy despite my mum being diagnosed with sever endometriosis. Should I seek a second opinion?
If your GP feels you should be being seen for a LAPDYE then yes I would seek a second opinion. I had my LAPDYE at 21 and was fine, they also found slight endometriosis so it can be caught at this age. Good luck!
hi im 24 and i have endometriosis and i have had about 4 laperoscopys and im sure my first one was either at 20 or before. so i think you should push for it, but if your gp is anything like mine you will have a fight on your hands to get it,it took me about 4 years to get a doctor to listern to me and i had to change my gp to do so, and when i did i was put on the emergence list.so make sure you keep on at them it is very hard though trust me. im still not sorted and now its got to the stage where ive lost my job and im stuck in doors 99% of the time cause i cant walk far and some days cant get out of bed and im still fighting for answers and help.
I would definately seek a second opinion, I had my first laparoscopy at the age of 17 and have had 2 more following that. Initailly they told me that i could not have endometriosis (my mum also had severe endo at the time) until they carried out the first laparaoscopy and found it.
It is something i have just come out of hospital for i had a laproscopy 4 days ago, the recovery is not the most comfitable due to bruiseing and such, however it is something you should get looked into. This is much better than living with the pain. I am 22 and was never told any age was a issue.
I was currently on the pill but came off it 2 years ago and ever since then my period only come once every few months but i am getting brown discharge that lasts 3-4 days with the same sore back and breasts when i have a period is this normal?
