Episode 8 - Sundown

Tethered Scar

Karen’s health woe comes in the form of a rather large scar. Situated on her stomach, the scar has tethered itself to her abdominal wall. As Karen has aged and put on weight, the scar has remained in a fixed position and the fat has spread around it. Karen’s only option is to speak to a plastic surgeon.

Mr Fazel Fatah is confident that he can remove the scar tissue before building up the fat along the area of the scar and bringing the skin together with a deep layer of fat beneath it. This should restore the contour of Karen’s abdomen. Remarkably, Karen remains awake throughout the procedure.

Four weeks later, Karen is back at the clinic. She now has one neat scar and a flat tummy instead of the tethered, buried scar she had before. The folds of skin are gone and Karen’s middle is a much more natural shape.

The Embarrassing Bodies team would like to thank:

The Westbourne Centre, Birmingham

Yes, any scar can cause pain or discomfort and perhaps more so if tethered. In itself it is not a sign of problem, but a tight scar can cause discomfort locally or even sharp shooting pain due to entrapment of healing nerve ends.

I had my appendix removed 32 years ago and still get a bit of discomfort now and again. I just ignore it!
