Growing Pains

Morbid Obesity

18 year old Scott visits the Embarrassing Bodies clinic because he thinks his weight is out of control. At 23 stone he is morbidly obese, always hungry, and constantly fails with dieting. Most of all, Scott his worried about his health and says he has experienced chest pains on a couple of occasions. He tells Dawn he is interested in the option of getting a gastric band – this is a band placed around the stomach surgically to reduce it’s capacity for food. Dr Dawn agrees to this in the form of a compromise which will see Scott see a dietician and a bariatric (weight loss) surgeon. The surgeon tells Scott that a gastric band gives him the best chance of reaching and sustaining a healthy weight. Scott is then visited by dietician Sue Lloyd, who advises him on how he will have to alter his eating habits to get the most out of a gastric band. Scott decides to go ahead with the operation, and not long after he’s lost 2 stone.
