How to Look After Your Teeth
If you're the kind of person who makes do with a quick 30-second brush with a 3-year-old toothbrush once a day, then you're storing up some serious dental issues for later life. This is Dr James' step-by-step guide to how to look after your teeth and the warning signs you should be looking for in your mouth.

My front tooth is slowly turning black & I keep getting severe toothache at least once a day...I don't want it taken out as its at the front...Plus I cant afford to have a fake tooth put in....Is there any other way around this?
my gums hurt when i brush and it puts me off it,what should i do
I'm 18 and I make special effort to look after my teeth, I don't overdo it on the sugary drinks and food, although I suppose I'd be lying if I said my diet was 100% perfect. (My new years resolution is to sort that) Anyway, without fail every few months I will get horrible pain in some part of my mouth, I will either need a filling or antibiotics or both :( I especially get problems with infections in the gum where my wisdom teeth are still hiding (they are impacted, but one has started to push through anyway. OUCH) I brush 2/3 times a day, use mouthwash and floss when I can, although flossing is very uncomfortable as my teeth have literally no space between them. What else can I do? It makes people think I don't look after my teeth! Everyone in my family that I know has had problems with their wisdom teeth being impacted and causing problems, could this be contributing? I don't want to be in such bad pain every few months!
When I was younger, I use to miss brushing my teeth on a night because I couldn't be bothered. When I noticed how yellow they were becoming, I started to brush my teeth really hard to try and get rid of the colour fastly. As I was doing this constantly, my top right gum has started to slowly fade away. It's become very sensitive in that area. What can I do to help it grow back?
Your gums are receding, so first of all, stop brushing so vigorously trying to get the colour to change. Go out, buy a one dollar SOFT toothbrush and some floss if you don't already have it. Floss first, getting slightly underneath the gum, but carefully. Your gums will bleed a little, don't panic. Next, with your new toothbrush ready, brush in a circular motion on the front and back of your teeth, or an up-and-down motion, DO NOT brush the surfaces side-to-side, that will irritate your gums and make them even worse. Try to spend at least ten seconds on each part of the tooth, and be very gentle with them. The colour will probably not fade, and you'll have to get a whitening at your dentist, but in a couple months your gums should slowly heal. I had this problem as well because I brushing very hard and not flossing, but my gums are very good now and healthy.

Hello i suffer with bad breath which smells like poo how do i sort this? i have seen my doctor and I clean them for about 2 mins twice a day and chew chewing gum but the smell never goes away.
Try using extra strong minty mouth wash after brushing your teeth. Also dental floss to remove any old food you can't get out with your toothbrush. Chewing gum only works for about 2 minutes and has some substance that makes you hungry, I think that might make your breath smell. Also try brushing your tongue when you brush you teeth to as far as you can stand without making yourself sick.
also drink lots of water: it helps a lot
use a tongue scratcher, like orabrush (type it in on youtube). your tongue harbours a lot of bacteria, and yeast products make the issue worse so reduce beer intake and bread in take. i hope i helped
Could be a problem with your digestive system and not an actual issue with oral hygiene. But like the others have said, brush your tongue.
HI there, I'm 38 and have now lost 9 teeth. Fortunately only one is slightly visible. I am indeed a smoker which I know is harmful but all of my extractions have occurred since recovering from anorexia. I suffered with it for seven years from 25-32. Is there a link between anorexia and dental problems? I don't eat sugary foods or drink fizzy drinks and have good dental hygiene (apart from the smoking!) I've priced up dental implants but I really can't afford those. It affects my confidence, and, since my smile is often the first good feature people notice about me, it's really denting my ability to do so.
Try eating lots of fruit that aren't acidic. And brush your teeth three times a day and if that's not possible brush twice a day and mouthwash when you can't brush your teeth.
Hello there I am 18 and am described as being underweight. I am 6ft 2 and 130lbs but i would like to be less, i constantly watch what i eat and am never satisfied is this the beginning of an eating disorder?
Yes, your teeth are affected by anorexia very much. The lack of proper nutrition and vital nutrients have left your body weak. If you don't consume enough calcium (and vitamin D to help absorb it) your body will start breaking down bones and teeth, as calcium is stored in them. No nutrients -> tooth and bone decay. I suggest you get a bone scan to also check for osteoporosis.
Thanks for advice - I had a bone scan at the time and I'm fine re bone density and risk of osteoporosis. Too late for my teeth unfortunately. Thanks again :)
I love the dentist. How can you not go?
some times you cant understand them
