NHS Choices Condition

Content supplied by NHS Choices

If you think you may have a breast infection, it is important to see your GP immediately and if possible, before an abscess forms. Your GP will assess your symptoms and will consider the appearance and tenderness of the breast in response to gentle pressure. If an abscess has formed, it can often be felt as a lump.

For women who are not breastfeeding, further tests may be needed, such as a mammogram or biopsy. A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breasts. It is used to detect tumours and cysts, and to identify benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) growths. A breast biopsy takes a sample of breast tissue to be analysed for signs of breast cancer or other disorders.
