NHS Choices Condition

Do
- Take time to allow your bones to heal.Â
- Follow any exercises your surgeon/podiatrist or the physiotherapist gives you to strengthen your toe and increase flexibility.
- Keep your foot dry. Bacteria thrive in warm, wet areas and infection can set in if you get your foot wet.
- Drink plenty of fluids and continue with exercises to allow for blood circulation. This will reduce your risk of a clot in the leg.
Don't
- Get your dressing wet. You can get a special 'wet sock' to protect it when you shower, but should still take care.
- Smoke. It can increase the risk of DVT and also impair healing.
- Bear weight on your foot unless advised by your surgeon/podiatrist. This is especially important if you have a plaster cast.
- Wear fashion shoes, including high heels, for six months after surgery.
