Obsessive-compulsive disorder and body dysmorphic disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) can have a huge impact on the lives of people with the conditions, and their family and friends.
People with OCD can suffer from obsessions and/or compulsions to an extent that their everyday lives are disturbed.
People with BDD are overly concerned with an imagined physical flaw, or the significance of a minor defect.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued guidance that looks at various stages of diagnosis, treatment, care and more.
Itâs aimed at adults, children and young people with the disorders, but the NICE guidance may also be helpful for family members, carers of people with OCD or BDD, and those with a general interest in healthcare.
The NICE guidance covers:
- The care people with OCD or BDD can expect to receive from their GP or other healthcare professional.
- The treatments available, including psychological therapies and medication.
- The services that may help with OCD or BDD, including specialist mental health services.
- How families and carers may be able to support people with OCD and BDD, and how they can get support for themselves.
