NHS Choices Condition

If you have had a painful erection for more than four hours, you should visit your GP or accident and emergency (A&E) department. Once a diagnosis is made, it is important to get treatment quickly.
Your doctor will need to know the length of time you have had the erection and will ask you questions about:
- your medical history,
- what medication (if any) you are taking, and
- if you are taking or have taken illegal drugs.
Your doctor will then examine you. If you have priapism, you will have a hard penis with a soft glans (the rounded mass of tissue at the end of the penis).
