NHS Choices Condition

The only guaranteed way to prevent catching syphilis is to avoid sex. Limiting the number of your sexual partners will also help.
Condoms do provide an excellent level of protection. Make sure you use a condom during vaginal or anal sex, and a condom or a vaginal dam during oral sex.
Avoid sharing sex toys. If you do share them, wash them or cover them with a condom, before letting anyone else use them.
Remember that actual sexual penetration or ejaculation does not need to take place for the condition to be spread.
If you are a drug user, avoid using other people's needles. Many pharmacies and local authorities offer needle exchange programmes, where used needles can be exchanged for clean ones. Your GP or drug counsellor should be able to provide more information.
