We asked Professor Bruce Campbell, consultant vascular surgeon at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, what he would want to know if he had varicose veins.

Can I leave my varicose veins alone?

Most varicose veins are fine without treatment. If they get worse, see your GP and ask about treatment options.

Should I have a special type of surgeon?

Choose a vascular surgeon or a general surgeon with a vascular interest. Your GP should be able to advise you of any surgeons with a special interest in varicose veins in your area. Alternatively, ask friends who have had varicose vein surgery.

How can I decide whether to go ahead with surgery?

The surgeon should explain the pros and cons of treatment and give you written information to help you make an informed choice.

What type of physical examination will I have?

The surgeon should always examine your veins by ultrasound. If varicose veins have come back after previous treatment, you should always have a duplex ultrasound scan.

How soon can I expect to have my veins treated?

Ask your GP which surgeon has the shortest waiting list for varicose veins in your area.

After the surgery, will I have noticeable scars?

Ask the surgeon how big the scars will be. They should be small.
