Body Check: Semen
When men ejaculate, the purpose of their semen is probably the last thing on their minds, but it can serve a very important role in spotting changes in your well being. In this video, Dr Christian discusses what changes to look out for in your semen.
Usually, semen is a white or off white fluid that within about 30 minutes turns runny and clear. Any changes in colour or smell could be a sign of something more serious.
Semen will usually have a chlorine type smell, but a strong foul smelling ejaculation could be a sign of infection. Yellow or green tinged semen could also indicate infections and red or brown semen can highlight prostate problems.
The amount of semen produced varies from man to man. However, recurring low levels of watery semen could indicate a condition called retrograde ejaculation and though not harmful, it can cause fertility problems.
If you spot any of these changes contact your GP.

hey, i was just wondering is there any way apart from surgery that i can improve the girth of my penis, because iv seen loads of tablets on the net but i dunno if they actually work?? i just need sum advise.
i have been trying to get my girlfriend pregnant for a yeah and a half,we havent sucseded.do you think ther is a problem?
'Smegma' is often confused with the shedding of skin deposits and fatty secretions from the inner foreskin - all natural and harmless. True smegma is a self-replenishing, translucent, odourless and beneficial part of a normal penis. (Its name is derived from the Greek for 'soap/detergent'.)
I'm 70, but for at least 7 years my semen has been very grey in colour. You do not give an option for this, so I clicked 'brown'. I was sadly fully circumcised in 2002 for extreme phimosis, which I understand was possibly the result of injury when I was a boy. The semen colour change occurred after circumcision, but I doubt any link to the operation is relevant(?). Can a colour change be linked to what we drink or eat? (I know there's another semen-related affect upon one of our five senses.)
Sorry, but i forgot to mention, my mother makes me take vitamin supplements daily. 3 Cod Liver oils, 1 Magnesium & Calcium thing, and a general vitamins & minerals thing...
I'm almost 17, and i'm not sexually active. However, when masturbating, recently i've been finding that my (initial) semen is white, whereas afterwards it becomes 'yellowish', and has lumpy bits in... as i say i'm not sexually active with anyone other than myself, so i doubt it's an STI... IS there a problem? If so what should i do? (and would my GP keep it confidential from my parents?...)
if I haven't ejaculated for a week or so then my semen has a lot of lumpy bits especially towards the end of the ejaculation. The semen is white if I ejacualte more frequently.
Hi Bobby, What you describe is actually 100% normal. Only a small amount of the fluid expelled during ejaculation is actually sperm. Much of it is actually fluid from the Prostate gland. As the testis can only produce a certain amount of sperm, if you masturbate more often, less semen is ejaculated, and more prostate fluid is expelled. Hence if you masturbate more frequently, your semen will be more liquid, and less frequent, more lumpy. This is absolutely normal, and all males experience this. Hope this helps your issue. Sam
