Consultation: Anal Warts

Up to 70,000 cases of anal and genital warts are diagnosed every year in the UK, and they are usually spread by sexual contact. In this Embarrassing Illnesses consultation, Dr Dawn Harper uses freezing as the method of ridding anal warts from a patient who has been sitting on them for a long time!

I'm 28 and for the last year and a half was convinced I had piles. After watching the programme I built up enough courage to go to the docs and get checked out. My dr told me to make an appointment with the GUM clinic as they weren't piles at all, they were warts. My trip to the clinic was not as scary as I had thought it was going to be, the staff were brilliant and my dr gave me lots of advice. He was none judgemental and did not treat me like a dirty diseased freak... After all the doctors see this every day. Anyway, my warts were frozen and u have to go back for a few more weeks. If u are in any doubt...GO TO YOUR GP!!! They are there to help! It's really not as bad as you imagine it to be... And the GUM clinic is a fantastc resource! I would go back and get checked any time! It's better to be safe than sorry.

Hi, about 9months ago, i noticed bleeding from my back passage.. and has progressivly got more and more uncomfortable especially wearing a g-string or anything tight, i haven't actually noticed any lumps but started to notice 2 small wart looking things inbetween my vagina and anus, and what looks like loads of little warts together in a small line going down the side of my vagina (outer lip) i am so confused as to what this is and nervous to go to my GP. is there any advice you could give? Many thanks

I got diagnosed with genital warts on the 24th December 2009 (devastated Xmas present!). I hated them and thought my boyfriend would judge me but the GUM clinic doctors reassured us both that you have NO IDEA where they came from, it could have come from him or me, we just don't know. We do not blame each other for it which is the best thing; he is amazingly supportive which also helps! I was given WARTICON which caused great pain as it cracked my skin (it hurt to sit down). Now they have given me ALDARA, I was given 4 weeks’ worth of the cream and saw no change, I went back and the doctor said everything is working perfectly and gave me another 4 weeks of the cream. I had a massive wart that was hanging on by a thread for the first 4 weeks and looked last night to put the cream on and it’s GONE! Aldara is slow but effective, don't be shy, make sure you go and get it checked! I did and I am on the way to being fully cleared. It is hard, I broke down crying in the GUM clinic but they are so nice they really helped me. If you have them, GET THEM CHECKED!
