Consultation: Ear Infection

Dr Christian Jessen examines a patient suffering from something nasty in her ears, in this consultation from series one of Embarrassing Illnesses. After the results from the lab come back, it seems the patient has an infection more usually found elsewhere on the body!

I used to wear ear rings but one of the hole got infected some how and it grow into a big ball. This has gotten really painful at times but the doctors say it is a cosmetic issue and there is nothing that can be prescribed or done about it but surgery which I have to pay for. Is there any other treatment I can do as it is very very painful and I can not afford the approx £600 needed to remove it. Please help.

I have recently had a really bad cold. When ever I get a cold I seem to have a lot of mucus which makes it really hard to hear. How does fluid in the sinuses block hearing? Could this be an infection?

I am seventeen years old, I have had constant and recurrent ear infections in both ears for the last eleven years. My ears become blocked with thick sticky fluid which varies in colour from clear to dark brown - it oozes out overnight and often smells quite pungent. I loose hearing in both ears and they are painful to touch. I prevent all water from entering my ears by wearing silicone earplugs. The hearing loss is beginning to affect my ability to concentrate in college and I recently had to do a music exam with both ears completely blocked. The pain and oozing prevent me from sleeping (on bad days I take up to 2500mg of painkillers per day). When there is not pain there is constant itching. Recently I have started to hear a faint but constant whistling. I have had every drop, spray, and cream available (I have even been prescribed nasal cream to put in my ears). After having my ears syringed for the sixth time, I was referred to an ENT specialist who performed numerous 'Micro-Suck' treatments, but nothing can clear the infection for more that around eight days. I know that the infection is in the outer ear, but I'm not sure if there is anything in the inner ear, although a while ago it felt like my Eustachian tube was blocked. Is there anything else that I can do to either get rid of the ear infections all together, or reduce the impact that it has on my hearing?

mt left ear is constantly itching right next to my ear drum. Ive had it syringed and they found an old peice of cotton bud in there but itchiness is still there, the itchiness seems to travel all over the ear and on my head just behind the ear. When the doctor checks it they must be finding wet fluid because they tell me to keep my ears dry all the time but I do. I do suffer from head to toe sweating when im sleeping every night and i dont know if this is where the wetness is coming from. It drives me insane and im constantly getting small scabs forming on the inner part of the ear probably from me scratching but I simply cannot ignore the itch. What could be the cause of this?
