Consultation: Haemorrhoids
Around one third of us will develop haemorrhoids (or piles as they are more commonly called). Dr Christian Jessen diagnoses one particularly bad case from series one of Embarrassing Illnesses, and refers his patient for surgery to remove the offending items.

I had piles as long as I can remember. Just recently started bleeding and I would like to remove them surgically. I heard there are different methods to remove them but my gp only knows about one which is the most painful one. I refuse to do it as I know is very painful to recover. I feel my Gp is a bit old and not to open minded to new techniques. What should I do, change doctor or perhaps should I tell me about other methods an see if he can refer me to a good surgeon?
after i had my son when i went to the toilet for the 1st i pushed a pile out & i tiny bit of bleed which only lasted the lenght of time i was on the toilet so it didnt concern me a great deal. i did'nt have any itchin. that was nearly 5 years ago. recently i've noticed that when i pass my bowels im goin fine but when i wipe myself its uncomfortable & would bleed a tiny wee bit. i wear panty liners & there is no blood on it or anything so again i was not concerned about the bleedin. but its still uncomfortable wipin & i tried feeling there & i have a skin tag but when i tried to put my finger inside for a feel it was painful. (not when i pass my stools) do i have internal piles or something else please help
I have just had the banding operation to remove piles i have lived with them for at least four years and they caused mucas and blood weeping. From time to time heavy bleeding. It should be noted that I had tests and a colonoscopy camera for cancer a check as it is so important not to ignore symptoms that can be dismissed as piles. My father was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and had put off signs of bleeding he thought were piles. I was ok and he is now clear and very lucky but it goes to show you need to get bleeding checked from the anus. I was concerned and upset to whether others could smell me and the itching became intollerable at night keeping me awake. The longer you leave it the worse it can get so now I feel much better more confident and have increased my fibre in my diet, as instructed. Important to prevent them re occurring. Don't suffer in silence especially you guys doctors have seen it all before.
I have definitely got this, I've had it for about three or four days now, it's uncomfortable but I don't want to see a doctor, how can I get rid of it asap!?
Try using creams which you can get from over the counter.
Anusol works to shrink the swollen veins. You can get it from most chemists and though awkward to apply it does the trick
I have had piles for as long as i can remember i definatly had them before pubity im now 22 and it has only got worse over the years. The most frustrating part is the itching, i have torn alot of skin itching around the anus and i wake up to bloody knickers on a regular basis. i have a small lump on the skin between the anus and vagina, not sure of the actual name for that part but that was the first sign of external piles (if that is what it is)most of them are internal and only became external 2 years ago. Ive seen a skin specialist but he was no help. i cant go on with the pain any longer im taking paraceatamol everytime i go for a poo. my diet is fine my health is fine. theres no explanation and it isnt going no where. ive tried creams upon creams and ointments but nothing is working..Please help!
I live in Oxford, I have piles and its been very hard to work and sit in the office. I would like to remove them but I do not know any doctor to do that could you please give me a name of a doctor you recommend. And is it a good idea to remove it? Thanks
Your GP will be able to refer you to a hospital to have them removed. There are a variety of techniques from cryosurgery (freezing) to banding, where a tiny elastic band is fitted around them cutting off the blood supply and they just wither and drop off.
i have had problems with doing the toilet in other peoples houses since i was 16 so i used 2 hold the toilet in 4 days at a time while stayin with friends. therefor i became realy constipated and had trouble tryin to do the toilet and it would be really sore then a year n a hlf ago during my pregnancy i noticed a little pink thing was popped out my bum i left it hoping it would go away is it hemirods i dnt think its piles theres only1 n it doest bleed what shud i do about this. now i have settled with my partner of 3 years i am not embarssed to go 2 toilet but nothing is improving.
It is a haemorrhoid. If it is causing no trouble it is nothing to worry about. Straining and irregular bowel movements as you describe are the cause, as is the strain of pregnancy. If it bothers you try an over the counter treatment or see your GP to consider removal.
