Consultation: Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation, like any other skin condition, can lower the sufferer’s self confidence. Dr Pixie McKenna talks to a patient whose social life has been placed on hold because of this Embarrassing Illness, and recommends a course of laser treatment and lotion to enable her to stay out clubbing with her mates all night long…

I am a white 36 yr old female & have brown marks on my cheeks. It seemed to start last year & now has excelled from just under the eye down inline with my top lip. I've been told that the pill can cause this which I have been on for 20 years, and in Jan I came off it. It seems to have got much worse & now really bad since going on holiday last week. I've been told that a microdembrasion facial course would help it but no cure. I have spoken to my doctor but said its just hormones.Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

After having my 2 children I have noticed light brown patches on my cheeks, chin and above my lip. I have tried to cover these up with make up but it still manages to show through, I find it gets darker if the sun is shining and therefore always put sunblock on to help.

Do you have any ideas that may help me, I feel my self confidence has dropped slightly and would love to find a cure.

Many thanks,

Julie

I have had pigmentation on my forehead, upper lip and chin for 2.5 years now (also starting around the eye area.
Things which have helped reduce & prevent it are:
1. lots of sunblock (factor 50+) if going outdoors, whether in the sun or not, plus hat of course!
2. Microdermabrasion, home face scrub every 3 days. I use Boots no.7 brand
3. recently started taking "pycnogenol" (waiting to see if it helps)
4. recently started taking "Agnus Castus" (waiting to see if that helps)
5. wear foundation to blend the colours (on top of sun block)
6. recently started putting co-enzyme Q10 (30mg) directly onto skin… read somewhere that it helps reduce brown spots, seems to help with my lighter brown spots. I pop open the capsule and squeeze the orange stuff out. Warning- you will look jaundiced!

IPL apparently works too, but haven't tried this yet, maybe later on, depending how things go. Best of luck all.
