Consultation: Psoriasis

Psoriasis is quite rare, affecting around 2% of the population, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less distressing. Dr Dawn Harper examines a patient who just wants to be normal again and she is referred to a specialist who suggests a course of light treatment may provide some light relief.

i have just turned 20 and have recently started developing psoriasis after consulting my GP. He has gave me Selenium Sulphate: an ingredient found in Selsun shampoo to put on my skin each night. that has seemed to lighten spots so far.

However, would anyone be able to enlighten me on what the reoccurring effect are like? My psoriasis is mild at the moment, but does it become worse the as more it occurs, or does it stay generally at the same level?
I wish everyone the best of luck with tackling their psoriasis

Hi, I'm 23 & suffer from guttate psoriasis! It is linked to tonsilitus so flares up when I have a throat infection & lasts months at a time. However, doctors refuse to take my tonsils out, seen as this would pretty much prevent my psoriasis I am saving to get it done privately!

If it is any help to anyone I find dovebet ointment /dovonex cream are the only two main treatments! But also bath in a new product made up of the deadsea sea salt, avocardo oils & alo-vera! These r all excellent for skin!

where can light therapy be found in manchester?

i'm 22 and over the past year i have developed what i think is psoriasis its only on the palms of my hands and soles of my feet my docter says it is dermitits as i am a hairdresser but is it possible to be psorisis as my mum suffers badly from it. but it looks differnt to hers not red just very dry scaly skin.the creams my docter gave me burn.

iam 19 and i have psorisis but its quite mild and small patches and use to have it in my hair ive tried creams i got from the hospital but it hasnt cleard up any advise would be great

my mum has psorisis and so far nothing is working for her which makes me so sad!! now she'll try some new treatments and i was SO hoping everything would be fine but reading what you're all are saying, that nothing works for you,is terrible. this light treatment, when it does work for someone, is that forever? because the treatment lasts for a few weeks or months and the patches.. what happended after that?

I'm 41 and have had psoriasis since i was about 13, it disapeared totaly during pregnacy and reapeared the day after. I can control it with some effect with coal tar based creams and shampoo. My psoriisis is mainly on my sclap arms and legs and at its worst on my body as well. I don't attempt to cover it any more, i just answer the questions. An effective temporary solution seems to be a couple of weeks on holiday, at the sea side, areas exposed to the sea seem to clear.

hi.am a 35 yr old man and have had psorisis since i was 18.it started in scalp, and year by year went to the arms, knees, legs, finger nails which i find the hardest to accept.uvb light treatmeant will work in conjuntion with a cream, but will only work for so long.shower gels and soap make it worse .so my advice is to use emullsifing oinmentment for showering.calpasal shampoo is great for scalp but as you cant use it every day.use a baby shampoo in between.the doctor also presceibes dovobet and dovonex for lessions on your body.and think they work to a certain degree.betacap for the scalp i find works too.the doctor stuff keeps it at bay,but am afraid wont get rid of it.can i just say i think exercisce and saunas are also benifical.i havent done either of the latter recently and have found my nail psorisis has flared up again.hence thats probably why i am writing this.this has just been my experience in the last 20 odd yrs of living with this disease.ps i find its now starting edge of my eyebrow.

I am 42 and have had psoriasis since I was 8. It started with a small patch on one finger but I now have it on both hands (palms and fingers) and on the soles of both feet. When I was pregnant it would go, returning about 6 months after giving birth. I have tried all treatments – coal tar preparations, steroid creams, light treatments. I have now given up as nothing 'medical' seems to work. I moisturise regularly and wear arthritis gloves when my hands are bad. None of my children seem to be afflicted (hope it stays that way) so I'm grateful for that.

I have suffered from psoriasis for the last 8 years, starting off with just a few patches, getting to the stage of the woman in the above video! tried all the different creams, and light treatment, nothing worked. i can totally relate to the comments about feeling depressed, it is horrible! i remember going to a GP, to be told, why bother wasting your time treating it, its just cosmetic!! i am now on ciclosporin, and i must say, its really working for me. i have two tiny patches on my back, and just darker patches on my skin where the ps has disappeared. my advice is to persevere with your gp and consultant, if something doesn't work, there's always something else to try, and remember, different treatments work better for different people. i have hardly any side effects from ciclosporin, slight nausea, but as long as i eat with the tablets, i'm fine. Good luck everyone!
